Saw someone from Wallstreet yesterday (?) on Fox Business explaining that gaming is going digital and that he expects Gamestop to have a good year this year, what he called a "hardware" year, and then be done and gone in 4 or less.

Wasn't someone else predicting Zynga was in meltdown mode too?

Yeah, but this way he can point back and say:

"Really it was not the stupid crap coming out of my mouth that started this!"

Zynga IS in meltdown mode.  Mattrick jumped onto a sinking ship.

I too believe Digital is going to be taking over about halfway into the cycle of these new systems.  Physical stores will become moot for new stuff.  Gamestop will probably become a retro shop.

GOOD! I know a few people that can drive the fuck there to get their retro games. I'll wave politely as they drive out. No doubt they'll think they're the boss when they wave their owned discs on the way back home. I won't be in the window, since I'll already have an hour in on my newly released digitally downloaded game before the end of the world, Communist take over, Terrorist attack, civil war, asteroid strike or what ever else could stop all-digital gaming. LOL

Speaking of Mattrick, he might consider a new job after Zynga go bust.

I can understand the appeal for Mattrick to head to Zynga.

The company is doing very badly, hundreds of employees in layoffs and most of the business was based around stealing someone else's game and putting the word Zynga on it.

IF Don manages to turn around this company and get them not only stable but growing, then he'll have a powerful success story to his name that can lead him to a more powerful CEO position elsewhere.

The share price of ZNGA rose quite a bit when this story broke.  Will probably be a while before this affects the company's bottom line of course.

Of course he probably had to leave because the government didn't want any more bad PR for its device they are going to use to collect information ahead of their taking over the country they already run et cetera.

No need to enter the 25 digit codes - they can simply be scanned.

The official email to MS employees.

Quote:

Steve Ballmer email to employees on Don Mattrick transition
July 01, 2013
Text of an internal e-mail from Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer to employees regarding changes in leadership within the Interactive Entertainment Business group.

From: Steve Ballmer
Sent: Monday, July 1, 2013

Subject: Don Mattrick’s Next Chapter

Zynga announced today that Don Mattrick would be its new CEO, effective July 8. This is a great opportunity for Don, and I wish him success. Don’s directs will report to me and will continue to drive the day-to-day business as a team, particularly focused on shipping Xbox One this holiday.

Since joining IEB more than six years ago, Don and his team have accomplished much. Xbox Live members grew from 6 million to 48 million. Xbox 360 became the No. 1 selling console in North America the past two years. We introduced Kinect and have sold more than 24 million sensors. We released fantastic games, and, most importantly, we expanded Xbox to go beyond great gaming to deliver all the entertainment people want — sports, music, movies, live television and much more.

In the past month, the IEB team showed for the first time here on our Redmond campus, and again at E3, how we are going to continue to transform entertainment with Xbox One. I am incredibly proud of the work and vision culminating in Xbox One.

I’m particularly excited about how Xbox pushes forward our devices and services transformation by bringing together the best of Microsoft. The consoles are incredible all-in-one devices with built-in services that consumers love, including Bing, Xbox Live, Internet Explorer, SkyDrive and Skype. And, just as important, Xbox Games, Xbox Video, Xbox Music and SmartGlass light up Windows PCs, tablets and phones.

Thank you, Don, for setting us on a path to completely redefine the entertainment industry. The strong leadership team at IEB and their teams are well positioned to deliver the next-generation entertainment console, as well as transformative entertainment experiences, long into the future.

Steve

As much as Don M didn't connect with gamers and 180 uproar, I doubt he was fired. People don't waltz into CEO positions in a matter of weeks.

Like they said, he wasn't "fired" but there was a reorg coming and he didn't want the new position.

Plus really, he woudn't be able to show his face in a PR sense again.  Not his fault, but that's how it goes.

I do not think so. I do not think it makes use of a tablet/phone camera.

But that would be a fantastic idea.

    meh?

    It's not a $100.00 perk.

For that kinda money I'll continue to make my kids enter the codes...

Mini rant: Capitalist society's have a general path they follow. Build something new or innovative AND show the public WHY the HAVE to have one and they'll beat your door down handing you money.

You don't tell them "everyone has to buy one and when there's enough numbers support someone will make something really cool with it". Am I not seeing this correctly? (rhetorical for those that can't tell)54

kinect is an external piece of the One's internals.  It's not removeable.  Same as the bluray drive wasn't removeable in the PS3.  Let's all just get over that.

    http://www.cracked.com/blog/a-breakup-letter-to-xbox/#ixzz2Y1OMAAKE

    Dear Xbox,

I'm so sorry you have to find this out in a letter, but after everything we've been through, I just couldn't handle doing it face to face. I won't beat around the bush or lead you on ... it's over. I would tell you that I'm sorry, but the harsh truth is, I'm not. And I won't give you some corny excuse, like "It's not you -- it's me," because the even harsher truth is that it is you.

You're just not the same console I fell in love with. You've changed, and it's not for the better. Lately, you've been strutting around, bragging to your friends that I'll buy into your changes no matter what, and if I don't, then I can just fuck right off. It's extremely disrespectful and, to be perfectly frank, insulting. You aren't the magical God's gift to gamers that you think you are, and I think it's high time I put my foot down and showed you that I have some uncrossable boundaries.

Read the rest of the letter at the link.

The scanning of long ass codes via kinect is pretty cool.  I'm not sure it's $100 cool, but it's still cool.

Glad to see this thread is back on topic.

I will, more than likely, get the new Xbox for a couple of reasons. First being my friends list and people from this site that I game with. Two, I don't really trust or like Sony. Not the PlayStation, just the company in general. It is a mismanaged company. They were the shit in the mid 80's and were leaps ahead of everyone. Over the last few decades they have been one step or more behind the competition. The other problem I have with them is all their products, at least the ones I am in the market for i.e. TV and etc, are overpriced and not rated well against the competition. I do believe that removing the eye and possibly their DRM policy was a last minute business decision without looking at the implications for the future. Basically, let's make a bunch of money now and react to the future as it unfolds. I could be wrong but that is how I am reading the whole thing.

Does every feature and nice thing that Kinect does have to be worth $100 to people?

The Xbox 360 has an achievements system that the original Xbox didn't.  It wasn't worth paying $400 for an Xbox 360 though because achievements aren't worth that much right guys?

That's pure diversion. Not a valid point nor arguement.

"The scanning of long ass codes via kinect is pretty cool.  I'm not sure it's $100 cool, but it's still cool."

    This ^^^.

As I said, it's cheaper to simply do it myself or get the kids to. And no, it's no the only thing it's capable of doing, but I still haven't seen anything worth my $100.00 yet, even if you rolled it all into one, so far...

The Xbox will most likely get my money down the road, simply because of specific games AND the friends list. However, it's not a blind OMG take my money situation for numerous reasons already batted about.

Let me know how you plan to save money by entering xbox live codes yourself lol

Not sure how that'll work out for ya.

I'm planning to download my games only, but that doesn't mean I think the disc drive should be optional.

These things are part of the system whether they need to plug in or not.

Also, calling the Kinect the sole reason the console costs $100 than the competition and thinking removing it would reduce the price by that amount is overly simplistic thinking.

    So now I'm simple? cheeky

Manually entering codes and they can keep the scanner, lol. Lets call it what it is, a scanner...

But seriously, they are going to really have to show that thing off and make it a must have, and so far their PR has been BS! Admittedly they do have some time left, but they'd better get it in gear.

I really don't think they fired the Interactive Head, I think he was smart enough to jump and jump he did. If he can turn Zynga around, he'll be the hero, and if not it'll pay the bills until he finds a better job.
