I like to kick Newfounland dogs. The Puffins are too cute. ;)

I think I would avoid kicking the 200 lb dog.  My little 20lb mutt on the other hand is constantly in danger of being punted out the window when he starts barking when Logan is sleeping.

Yeah, I don't actually kick any dogs. I find the Newfoundland dogs kind of scary because their poop is so big. Some drool a lot too. Yuck.

I could be a troll and just wait for someone to post this as truth. A FAKE marketing Ad is making the rounds. Confirmed to be fake by Aaron Greenburg.

In the spirit of general fuckery, I'd like to second that puffins are too darn cute to kick.  Ms. Plato and I had the chance to spend some time in Newfoundland last year, and one of the acitivites that Ms. Plato planned was a whaling tour.  Can't go out to see whales and not see puffins.  Poor little bastards, trying to fly....and being taken out by a 1' wave ...

My only problem with trips like that is that I can't keep it and replay it  later, or trade it in for someone else to try.  Talk about harsh DRM...

Are you sure they turn it off and don't start throwing images onto your screen and secretly start recording to send to the NSA?

What is a "dick punch"?

Just do the gesture to launch your preferred porn app - unzip your pants.

Add the projector for illumiroom, throw in a 3D TV...

A timely incoming skype call as you say "yes" could suddenly become very awkward.

On a different note, the DDR3 RAM in Xbox One is likely a preferred choice for the console compared to GDDR5.  The low latency of DDR3 that the graphics memory in PS4 can't provide is probably essential to Xbox One's multitasking and CPU heavy functions.  GDDR5 is strictly for games/graphics really, but on a console there usually isn't much need for low latency CPU memory.  The games benefit more from high bandwidth - such as what GDDR5 has over DDR3.

The very high bandwidth ESRAM helps out in the graphics department.  I found the part about offloading sound functions interesting, that'd be a performance gain.  Also, since Microsoft actually did some work to innovate on the parts, instead of piecing together computer parts found at best buy and making a controller with a touchpad, they might have more ways to increase performance than can be easily described in a paper comparison.  Then again, the studios that would truly push the console to its max capabilities wouuldn't be making multiplatform games that could be easily compared - such as 343's next Halo entry.  Their blank check development lead to the vast difference between Halo 4 and Halo 3's graphics, even winning Halo 4 best graphics on any platform last year from IGN.  They would be an example of a studio that would leverage everything they could about the console to make the next Halo a killer app - increasing console sales for next year's holiday season.

Another interesting facet is that both benefiting from software updates to improve performance likely gives an edge to Xbox One as its backed by a global leading software company, while the other side released an update for an update that made PS3's unusable.  Just requires a USB drive for that fix (sold separately).

Normally, neither side's hardware performance would improve over time, but the cloud can improve exclusives on Xbox One in certain areas.  However, without counting cloud as an advantage, Microsoft's software expertise would still afford them a console with better longevity in terms of performance and new features over years in its life.

So while an actual hardware performance advantage may have only existed on paper, the software advantage is clear.  The other advantage - a profitable company that can afford to improve the console and hire expert researchers - also goes to Microsoft.

For games, what it all means is that Microsoft's console can vastly outpace Sony's over time in graphics, online features/matchmaking, and exclusivity deals.  PS4 is simply more of the same with a bare minimum amount of iteration born from time constraints and debt.  At least they have infamous at launch, right?

Autarch, you said you might get both systems some day. With you and your wife's setup so close together a direct comparison may be possible. Interesting.

That'd probably be next year, but we could.  Depending on the availability of 4K games, we might get one of those screens eventually.

It'd be interesting though to compare multiplatform games.  Side by side with the same model of computer monitor even.

It'll take some convincing to get an eighth screen in this room, and a 4K resolution one at that :P

Is 4k likely to overtake 3D as far as graphical progression goes? I don't ever want to own a 3D TV, I wear glasses and its hard to get the fucking 3D ones over top my regular ones.

Actually, 3D will probably be added more to 4k tvs.  Its been a little while but I remember reading an article on...I want to say the home theatre site...that 4k reduces...tearing? idk..but basically the gist was that 3D was made better because of the increased resolution/pixel count or something like that.

3D is better with 4K because you can basically run 1080p at 60fps and still be in 3D. 3D always eats half the pixels for every FPS, so you need higher res to get the same regular resolution in a game.

4K tvs will probably include 3D capability for the most part.  The few on the market now have 3D capability.  However, 4K is simply a set of resolutions rather than a new feature or ability.  Simply more pixels on the screen, so an image can be described more accurately (sharpness/clarity).

The media that is natively 4K doesn't have a wide selection.  Heck, even today there aren't many tons of movies or tv shows broadcast in full 1080p.  Moving to quadruple that resolution will take time.  Having the PS4 and Xbox One both able to natively play movies at that resolution, and the Xbox One able to play games natively at that resolution might speed up the adoption rate of 4K televisions, which in turn makes creating native 4K media more worthwhile.  Much like PS3 and Blu-Ray/1080p.

I read somewhere 4k quality is expected to last 10 years before the next upgrade. Time will tell, though.

Unlike all previous, 3D-capable Sony sets, the XBR-84X900’s 3D is passive, not active. Passive 3D reduces a set’s vertical resolution to half of its native vertical pixel count. In a typical 3D HDTV, this results in a less than full HD resolution of 1920 x 540 at each eye. It also produces a grid of black horizontal lines in the image that, depending on the size of the screen, can be visible at normal viewing distances. With a 4K set, however, these issues disappear. The horizontal lines are gone, and while the vertical resolution presented to each eye is still reduced by half, with a 4K display the overall 3D resolution seen by each eye becomes 3840 x 1080, vertically equivalent to full HD. The passive glasses are also lighter and (usually) cheaper than the active variety, and without the alternate masking of the left and right eyepieces (required for 3D using active glasses), the 3D image is brighter and there’s far less chance of 3D crosstalk (ghosting).   http://www.hometheater.com/content/sony-bravia-xbr-84x900-3d-lcd-ultra-hdtv
