Congrats on getting your paperwork in! That's the hard part right? 1

At their age they can eat like horses and should.  But remember thay are doing 2 a days and probably 6-12,000 yds a day.  I'm only doing 2-3000 2 to 3 times a week and I'm having trouble keeping the weight on.  Down to 177-78 yesterday.  And yes the hard part is over.  2 weeks and counting.

Psych sheets are out.  If nothing changes, ie. faster swimmers entering I get to swim the 100 IM in the same heat as this guy.  His name is David Sims.  He qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics but didn't get to go because the USA boycotted that year due to the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan.  He holds a bunch of National records.  Most recently this one.

http://youtu.be/dkkTgPMz4Ms

He's in the 45-49 age group but it will be fun to see how I do.  Even though I've only been back in the water for 10 mos.  Could be worse.  I could be a 25-35 year old guy in the same heat about to be beaten by an Olympian.

This is it. Tomorrow at this time the races will be over. I have left the speculating alone until this time. My goals are as follows: Converted to SCM from SCY times done at 2012 State.

100 Backstroke: Seeded time 1:13.xxx

100 IM: Seeded time 1:13.xxx

50 Backstroke: Seeded time 32:xxx

I hope all of these are doable. Considering I have about 6 mos more time in the pool and gym since the State meet in April 2012. Then I was also just coming off of 4+ mos of training after the surgeries and weight loss etc. These would also break the current the ILMSA State records for these events in my 55-59 age group. This is the only SCM left this year in IL so they might be safe for a while. Unless someone swims in a meet in another state. But I am also comfortable if I get beat by someone else in my age group at this meet and do these times because then I still can see how I compare to the yr end rankings Nationally in 2011 and then when the 2012 figures come out in early 2013.

There is another meet in Munster IN the following Sat.  I might swim in that SCY meet to see if I can keep this taper condition for 5 more days.

I totally blew my first event the 100 Back. My last 50 I felt like I was dead. Trying to figure out where I went wrong. Plenty of sleep the week before. I misjudged all 3 of my turns because the turn flags are 1 ½ yards farther out and I hadn't had any practices with them until the actual race. No starts since the State meet either. It might be a couple of other things. In practices you normally go about 60-70%. Maybe it had to do with not enough warmup. In practices I normally feel really good about 1500 yards into the practice. I normally practice later in the day after 2-3 meals. Maybe I need more food before the meet. I only had 2 soft boiled eggs and a piece of toast. And running on empty from food the night before. After the race I was so drained my hands were shaking like I had a bad case of the day after Alcoholic shakes. When you gear up that in a race situation and pass that proverbial threshold you are toast. Nothing you do will help. After the race I had the IM coming up in less than 30 mins. I made the decision to skip the IM and rest the hour or so for the 50 backstroke. 2 bananas, 2 breakfast bars and a bottle of Gatorade and plenty of water made the difference. I broke the State record for the 50 back by about 2 secs. I also found out that even though I tanked in the 100 backstroke I sneaked in and broke it by .10. So they are mine for a while I hope.

Thinking of doing the Munster meet this weekend and warming up more, eating more beforehand and doing a tune up event like the 50 Breaststroke before either the 100 IM or the 100 Freestyle. Can't do both because they are back to back. But might have enough rest for the 50 Fly later in the meet.

1st post fixed & streamlined.  Swam at Munster community poll last Sat. 11/3/2012.  A beautiful new 10 lane 50 meter pool.  Had pool setup for a SCY (short course yards- 25yd) meet.  Just took it nice and smooth.  4 swims in less than 3 hours compared to 4 in 6-8 hours.  All times were within 2 tenths to one sec of State 2012 times.  No more meets until after the new year.  Will start training for the 200 IM.  An event I haven't done in competition since 2/1975.

A proud Papa you must be.  yes  Wait until they (the boys) do a full body shave complete with the tops of their heads before their regional/sectional meet to qualify for the State meet.  It will look like a chemo convention.  I always felt at home.

He swam the Butterfly  last nght for the first time, and was 4 seconds off state qualifyng. Coach is gonna pursue that I think. He subbed for someone out last night.

Hey ModelT, have you swam the 500? We had a girl from the other school there last night who had already qualified for state in the 500 and she was phenomenal. Quick and steady and sprinted the last 25, crazy.

Some days I don't drive that far.  Did it a couple of times in HS.  But haven't attempted it in a masters meet.  Baby steps or strokes for me.  For some strange reason freestyle is not a favorite for me.  Maybe it's because I did fly, back and IM in HS.  I'd rather do the 100 IM than the 100 free.  But doing more of it in practice because I'd like to get in the 54-55 second range for state.  But that would only get me 3rd based on the younger guys coming up from the 50-54 group.  One did a 51 and the other did a 52.  yes  Not bad for old guys considering the IL Boys State qualifying time is a 48.09.

55-59 Record for SCY is a 50.xxx.  But that was in 2009 during the LazerBabies suit era.

That's haulin' it down the lane!

We did a smaller school meet Tuesday and Anthony didn't do the 500, they "let" one of the younger swimmers run it. Hehe. Apparently it's not real popular.

Swimming distance, 500, 1000, 1500, 1650 can be a lonely endeavor. They typically do more yardage per workout than the stroke guys (fly/back/breast) and the sprinters who are the puppies of the group. I always liked/like the stroke stuff. Kept/keeps me from getting bored. After a while doing freestyle then a flip turn over and over gets boring. IM with 4 different strokes/breathing sequences/turns with the 3 different distances 100/200/400 breaks up the monotony.

That's what I'm doing today.  500 warmup IM.  10 x 200's Alternating 1/3/5/7/9 will be 100 fly drill/100 back drill then a 2/4/6/8/10 will be a 200 IM then do a 100/back drill/100 breast drill then another 200 IM then a 100/breast drill/100free drill then another 200 IM etc.

then 250 with 10 pushups or 10 deep knee bends each 25 on deck the a quick 25.  then a

500 warm down.

total 3250 yds.  About 1 hour 20 minutes

The HS school guys will easily do twice that and then much more during the holiday breaks with their 2 a days.  10 -12,000 yds.  Can you say Eveready Bunnies!

Ha.  Something I can beat you at.  You slug. 8

But it's never too late.  Pick something you love or used to love and plan ahead.  I used the 2012 State meet when I got back into the water after my sex change operations last May and August.  Then focused on just participating.  A meet in Jan.  One in March and the big one in April.  It kept me on track and motivated so I wouldn't slack off.  It could be easy to do.  Funny thing is after a while the old competitive juices came back.  And now I try not to beat myself up.  At the recent meet I swam 4 events in about 3 hours.  Way more than the 1 every 2 hours I did at State.  And my times were within 1-2% of my State times.

Yeah, the kids just did a Saturday meet, lotta schools and Anthony swam a Pentathalon event. He looks like he's been drug behind a truck this morning. Placed 17th overall out of 50. We have another boy on the team that made 5th, he's really a squid.

Just finished my double weekends of hell. Last week was Munster IN kids meet on Sat/Sun. This weekend was a kids pentathlon at one pool and another swim meet at my pool where I was the head honcho ie., Meet Referee. A position where they give me a whistle and a white shirt and I think I know what I'm doing. J/k

The meets I swim in are easier. After this weekend of standing on deck watching the kids the feet/ankles/knees and back are stiff and sore. Plus I had work until 11 pm on Fri/Sat/Sun nights.

And school, you are right those pentathlons are tough. The HS kids do the 100 in fly/back/breast/free then the 200 IM in about 2-3 hours. Depending on the number of kids. That's 600 yards in all at peak speed. But they are young and we still pay all the big bills in life. I'd like to go back to that sometimes.

Kids placed fourth in regionals, the bigger three schools taking the top three spots, but the boys team took 4th, girls 5th, and fourth overall. Anthony placed 12th overall in the 500m. Still no state slots for my two, two chances left, and two others on the team have qualified so far.

As a famous politician once said.  "Keep hope alive".  Could you provide me with any links to read.  Or what were their times?  Our HS boys Sectional (your Regionals?) aren't until mid Feb I think.

That DQ in the 100 Breast of my results page should be a no show (NS).  I told them ahead of time but they didn't mark it appropriately.  I pride myself on swimming properly.  I will have a chance at the 100 Breast on 2/3/2013.

Halfway through my hell week before the 1st meet of my 2013 SCY season on 2/3/2013. Sat- legs weightlifting plus 2 miles walking. Sun- 3000 yds swim. Mon- 3 miles walking. Tues- Shoulders & arms weightlifting plus 3.5 miles walking. Weds was still sore but decided to do an easy mile swim (1750), yes I know a mile is 1760 but didn't need to do that last turn plus 10 yards. Gals in the pool during their fitness class were commenting on how I never stopped. Even at my advanced age I can still impress the ladies. As long as the ladies are the senior water fitness class. Their ave. age is probably near 70's.

Just like the one eyed man in the land of the blind. I'm the king.

Will go to the high school tonight for a hard short sprint workout 2-3000 yds. and starts/turns practice. Followed by an easy 3-4000 swim on Fri. Off day on Sat. The theory being that at this point in the season you swim tired then when you taper before the big meet (State, end of April) the times should drop. We shall see.
