Officially the Over Age 50 group still plays in the 9-11 Est time slot. We will just let things roll until the new game shows its strengths. Then we'll decide what fits us best.
In spite of party explosions and terrible lag we had stupid fun. It was so easy to tell we've known each other for so many years in Halo. Laughing all night long. We can say for certain, we did not give up on old Halo. At least 10 years of it so far, for most of us.
But ... Halo 5.
Next week's Over Age 50 be in Halo 5. I intend to host some kind of multiplayer from 9-11 EST. Most likely outside of match making. Since BTB may not be available, we'll have to play it by ear.
Over Age 50 members have priority but anyone 2old2play is welcome.
Big Team customs might get a little crowded on non-Warzone maps. May need to limit the party size for that. Eventually we'll be able to make large custom maps, but not for a while unfortunately. Parties with more than 12 players will be kinda screwed because of the size of the maps, and Warzone is limited to 12 players as well.
Okay, Halo 5 customs worked pretty good. Very smooth game.
Chat was an issue. We couldn't figure out how to lobby/game chat in customs without Live chat. It's great that Live chat maxes at 12 but we soon exceeded that limit and confusion set in quick.
Ultimately we got 2 teams and 2 chat parties going and it worked. We even had 18 in the game lobby but the game wouldn't start.
FYI, set party to invite to prevent overflow and confusion.
Thanks to everyone for their patience. I think my brain burned out.
FYI, this a 2old2play Over Age 50 event. I've always allowed much younger members in when there was plenty of room. If the party starts to fill up, I'd appreciate it if the youngest bow out first.
First Over 50 in Halo 5 was a whole lot better than the first run in MCC. Dedicated servers appear to be doing their job: no noticeable lag. Not sure why game chat didn't work (if it's a glitch, I hope 343 resolves it). The two chat parties was a functional fix, but I hope it's not the regular solution. Full group verbal communication is necessary to resolve issues like team balancing as well as choosing maps and game types. Matches shifted from very lopsided on one side to very lopsided on the other for multiple reasons that wouldn't have been an issue if we'd had full game chat.
But overall, I enjoyed it: 8 out 10 for me. Thanks to Deep and Chaos!
Glad I was able to jump in for a bit last night. Still throwing grenades when I try to zoom in dammit. Lack of game chat is an obvious issue. Having to switch XBL parties to switch teams and having no real time communication with half of the group in the lobby is a real pain in the arse. I agree. This has to be fixed soon. Another example of a game not quite ready being release?
Game play itself was pretty smooth, although I did get hung up in the equivalent of a black screen at the beginning of one game.
Maybe it is because I have been playing Destiny for the last year or so, but everyone appeared smaller to me for some reason, especially at distance. It seemed people were smaller than they should be at the distance they were from me. Same was true in campaign. Just something to get used to I guess.
I think the reason we had to do the two chat parties is because we had 18 people when we were setting up the chat parties. You can't have 18 people in an Xbox live chat party, right? Is it 8 or 12 now? Either way, 18 was obviously too many for Xbox live chat to put together.
Halo 5 is different for sure. A lot of new things to get used to, and I do enjoy it the more I play it. Not sure I'm ready for customs yet. I'm doing campaign and matchmaking for now. I think FFA is a good way to learn how to play the game quickly.
I wonder if the lack of Halo 5 lobby chat could be remedied slightly by using a ffa custom map/game as a makeshift chat lobby. (Assuming ffa can handle 16. Otherwise a team map/game with "all players" chat enabled -- assuming H5 still has that feature.)
Something like this:
1. Actual game ends.
2. Group in real (silent) lobby.
3. Host starts new ffa map/game that serves as the "chat lobby." Quick debrief of previous game and discussion of next game.
4. End "chat lobby" game.
5. Back to real (silent) lobby.
6. Start new actual game.
Positives: In-game team-only chat in actual. Group size of 16.
Duke, if we get to try this, I would prefer we tested with 12. The results would be the same without the complications of booting if it's too onerous, "time suck" as you said.
A better alternative than the 2 XBL party setup but in addition to "time suck" puts everyone on "honor system" for changing teams and additional stress on room leader. Better to stay with 12 and hope that is sufficient to get lobby chat -- worse case a full XBL party.
To help in that end (dammit) I won't be on tonight. Surgery today to remove a squamous cell tumor on my lower left leg and it is quite bothersome right now. So I am probably going to take a pill or two and turn in early tonight.
Played 6v6 Slayer all night. Worked pretty good. Good times, good people. :)
Invite only and max 12 helped keep things under control but also added extra overhead. If people were constantly coming and going, it would have been unmanageable.
Sounds great! Thanks.
I am starting to wonder what will happen to our Tuesday group when Halo 5 is released. Will everyone be playing it?
I certainly plan to be playing H5 when it comes out. Maybe we can put together some big Warzone parties. That could be fun.

A good turn out last night. Lots of fun and good company. Finishing up with UT Dedication, Donut Derby and Bumper Cars is always a treat.

It went out like it came in. All broked and jacked up. It is the biggest gaming disappointment for me by a long shot.
Ditto Assasin, I watched the warzone trailer again. I'm totally into that. I'll be playing some MCC tonight, if anyone is on I'll spam yah.
I'll be gone this weekend celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary. I'm on vacation next week though so I'll make up for it.
Yeah, I know you were there this morning.
Looking forward to kicking the tires on Halo 5 multiplayer with you guys!

Most of the group are over 60.
Check out xonebros great group of positive gamers thus far.
Starting this Tues. night at 9 EST, I will try hosting Halo 5 customs again with these limitations.
Invite only.
12 members in game.
12 members in live chat.
I'll up the numbers the moment 343i fixes the problem. BTW, I don't expect it will be fixed until Xbox Live chat can handle 16.

Might be worth testing once or twice.

Tried one game of Warzone. Woah, culture shock!
Lobby chat worked ok? Sorry I missed it. Leg doesn't hurt so much today.
