Iron Fist'in and TF2

Well, I've kinda been slacking on the daily sketches since returning from vacation... but that ended today. Did a little sketch for a jam being held over on deviantART that involves drawing the "dome" of your favorite superhero. I drew Iron Fist, one of my favorite characters and books out there right now. I was playing the mediocre but fun Spider-man: Friend or Foe with a buddy on the Wii last week and we played until we unlocked ole Danny Rand here so I could pit him against Spidey in the VS mode, which is why I felt inclined to include a punch to the kisser by Speederman.

Big sloppy sketch dump

Just got back from vacation. Went to Nashville with the wife and daughter to visit some friends we haven't seen in a while. Of course, I did no drawing or work while there but before I left I had gotten myself trained to do at least one sketch or drawing a day in addition to my other work. Here's a collection of some of the pieces I'm most happy with. Most were done all digitally in either Painter X or Photoshop, some were pencils which were then colored digitally. Some were done very quickly and are very rough, others I spent some time on.

Remo Williams

Anyone else remember this movie? I loved the shit out of it as a kid and caught part of it on TV the other day. A fucking classic. I'm kinda surprised by how many people have never heard of it, I know it was a bomb when it came out in '85 but I figured it might have a bigger cult following. Well, I felt compelled to do a fast sketch so here it is:

"The Eleventh Commandment".  Done completely in Painter X and Photoshop 7.

The Big Red Cheese

I've been pretty damn busy lately with the comic coloring work but I've been trying to make time to work on my own stuff too. Something I've been wanting to get back into for a while now has been inking and painting traditionally. Working digitally definitely has it perks, but I miss actually getting my hands dirty and also not having Layers and an Undo key to fix any mistakes I may make. It's great to have but I feel like it becomes a crutch when you really don't have to worry about fucking up. So last night I busted out my brushes, inks and markers and just went nuts for several hours.

Super-Con

Today was the first day of Super-Con in San Jose, CA and I got a free trip down there with the comic company I am now a colorist for. Was very cool. I had been wanting to go anyway simply because two of my favorite artists were gonna be there: Travis Charest and Adam Hughes. So I not only got to sit at a table all day and do sketches but our table was directly across from both Charest and Hughes. While I would have loved to get a sketch from AH they were priced at $200 so that wasn't happening, but Charest was cool and doing free quick sketches and I was one of the first to get one.

First comic book job

Well, I just got the word tonight that I will be the colorist for Relic and Ego (a comic published by ECVPress) starting with issue #1. That's pretty exciting. Not a huge deal, but it's a start. And it pays; not much but it's money. Hopefully this leads to more and more work, maybe even a penciling job.

Here's a little practice sketch with colors I did of one of the characters from the comic.
