satellite radio

I just got a new company car (dodge caravan) and it had satellite radio for a one day tease. It sounded good and I have a few questions. Should I get a monthly plan or lifetime? Can I use my subscription in another car? Should I get a portable satellite radio? Which one is best?

I have satellite radio and I love it. If you like music and hate commercials and crappy local morning talk, I'd opt for the lifetime subscription. Having it in your dash is nice, but if you have two cars you'll need to pay for a second subscription (it will be a discounted rate), unless you get a portable radio.

When I was driving two cars, I had one radio and two antennas so I could switch between cars easily. I don't know about all the models, but I use a Skydock (XM) which is basically a mobile iPhone dock with a dedicated app. It still uses the satellite so I don't have to use up my data plan or lose signal when I'm in a crummy area, and I just hit a button to switch to my iPod or a different app, like Audible or Spotify.

I don't know if Sirius and XM have completely merged their networks together - in the past, if you wanted Howard Stern and NFL you needed to buy a Sirius radio or pay extra for "Best of Sirius", and if you wanted NHL and Oprah you needed XM or "Best of XM". I've been on XM since before the merger so I'm more familiar with what's on my XM-branded lineup.

I have the XM side of the Sirius XM package, and I am a HUGE fan of it. I'm on my parents group plan and I give them cash for it. I went with XM because Opie and Anthony have been my favorite radio show since I was in high school. The music channels are also quite diverse. Another benefit is I travel somewhat often between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, and with XM, I never miss a Flyers game.

Lifetime subscriptions go with the radio. So if that is in your car then it goes with your car not with you. It's your car radios lifetime not your lifetime. XM and Sirius are still seperate companies even though jointly owned. I have both and have to have two seperate accounts which really sucks but it is what it is.

Wife has XM in her car and loves it. I drive it rarely but really like it. Of course this may be because I rarely get to play with it so it is "new" to me. I pay yearly. Not sure about lifetime because I have bad luck. As soon as I went that route, something would happen to the car or radio.

the yearly plan is a set dollar amount. you pay the first year, then when it's time to renew you call them and they'll give you a discounted rate. sometimes as low as half of the advertised rate.

i had sirius for 5 or 6 years now and couldn't imagine going with out it any more.

I can't ever remember when the year is up and it automatically renews at full price. I need to call and renegotiate.

I've had XM in my car(s) since 2009 and I absolutely love it.  I have the everything XM package plus the best of sirius and I think I pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $54 quarterly.  Besides the music which is great if you love sports they carry everything from NFL to college to one of my favorites NASCAR.  In my opinion definitely well worth it.

I'm guessing that 99% of the time you have it set to the Disney channel.

I'm actually dropping it and just using pandora, etc, from my phone.  I like it, though.

this is what I what I was getting at. you can get a better rate if you tell them the service isn't worth the fee they charge, they'll discount the current rate. you really only have to pay the full rate the first year. I'm not one to exploit something like this, but they do charge more than it's worth. there are times it takes 15+ minutes before I get service. some days it's spotty all day even though it's a sunny clear day.
