The Coffee Thread

I am a huge coffee fiend, and I'm sure many members here are as well. Some of the best coffee I ever had was a brand called Citavo, and if you ever have the chance, I suggest you try it. The problem is, they don't seem to sell to the public; I had it at a restaurant. I also enjoy Gevalia, as they have some delicious and diverse roasts. What are some other people like?

The best coffee in the Twin Cities:

 http://www.blacksheepcoffee.com/

I'm lucky I only live 4 miles from this place.

Every Sunday after the lovely  Mrs. KFK and I are done with our morning workout at the gym we stop for a cold press. And on lazy mornings when I sleep in I stop by and pick up a cup on the way to work.

Had a large Kenya this morning.

Starbucks and Caribou are burnt piss compared to this stuff.

I am unfamiliar with Caribou, but I hate the coffee at Starbucks. I do, however, enjoy they espresso beverages there. How do you take your coffee? When it's hot, I prefer mine black and unsweetened. If it's iced, which I drink often, I like it with half and half.

Yes.  Altho I like burnt piss for long drives on the turnpike.  Especially if I’m headed for Philly.  Really sets the mood.

I enjoy lower acidity brews and properly done city roasts the most.  But I’m not really picky.  If it’s a good bean properly roasted, properly ground, and properly brewed, it’s good for me.  I’m always surprised how hard it is to find a good commercial cup of coffee.

I'm more of a coffeee n00b than snob and prefer the expresso drinks over straight drip type coffee.  I'm a bit too cheap to pay $4-$5 every day for my caffeine fix so this is my homebrew solution:

1. French press to use for cold brewing a medium dark roast.  I like Starbuck's Cafe Verona roast but haven't tried much else yet (3oz sreving)

2. evaporated milk (4oz)

3. vanilla or hazelnut coffee syrup (1.5oz)

Makes a nice inexpensive Frappaccino type drink.  I prefer mine chilled, though it can be served warm.    I also imagine you could add a nice shot of whiskey to this for a little "pick me up".

Keurig. I can already see all you coffee snobs rolling your eyes but it's easy, fast, and I never have to clean shit up. If it wasn't Keuirg, I'd be drinking some off brand in a Folgers colored tub probably. I like my coffee like my women and beer...cheap, easy, and goes down quick.

I like my Keurig. It makes great iced coffee on the 4 oz. setting. I get a big ass box of 80 K cups of Neuman's Own for $30 at BJ's Wholesale Club. I also enjoy the various iced teas.

My cousin has a Tassimo which she RAVES about, but I haven't had the opportunity to try it. She said the T pods have a bar code on top that instructs the machine whether it's coffee, cappuccino, or something else and tells it exactly what temperature and amount of pressure needed for the optimal brew. Given the choice between the two, I'd probably pick the Keurig because of the versatility of the K cups (tea, iced tea, hot chocolate, apple cider) over the strictly coffee and espresso based beverages of the Tassimo. While I do LOVE espresso based drinks, not many do compared to the plethora of drinks Keurig offers.

We had the keurig but it wasn't for me.  I drink coffee by the gallons.  So I'm back to taking a a travel mug and thermos of coffee to work each day.  Bought a real Thermos brand  Thermos and that thing rocks.  It's kept coffee hot all day long.  I'll make my coffee at 7:00 am, forgot to drink the 2nd mug and that shit was still hot at 5:00PM.

I wish I had a coffee roaster nearby, closest one I know of is in Peddler's Village in Bucks County (I think there's a few 2o2p'ers in my area).  So I usally settle on buying beans from Starbucks and make it at home.  They wife and I really enjoy the Guatemala Antigua blend.

I live in Dublin, right next to Doylestown. I also support the Thermos idea, as I have one I would bring iced coffee to work in the trucks with me. I worked so well I'd still have ice in it by 6 PM, when I finished it.

I buy my beans from a local roaster about once every two weeks. He is very good and knows his stuff.  The coffee I buy is Mexican Pluma Don Eduardo. It is a light to medium roast that is very mellow. The label reads as this - "This coffee is a mild, well balanced cup with a slight, semi-sweet chocolate accent and nutty overtones". When sweetened it does taste like it has chocolate in it.

http://www.javajacks.com

I grind my beans every morning for my one cup of coffee. I use a Cuisenart burr grinder.

http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-DBM-8-Supreme-Automatic-CCM-16PC1/dp/B00018RRRK

I brew my coffee in a Melitta Ready-Set-Joe pour over maker right into my coffee mug.

http://www.amazon.com/Melitta-Ready-Single-Coffee-Brewer/dp/B0014CVEH6/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_z

I am a coffee snob. I have spent a lot of time and money pursuing the perfect cup. This is the best I have found so far.

I was waiting for GIJoeBob to jump in here. I can get behind his coffee snobbery. United we STAND!

I'll be upgrading to a burr grinder eventually, but right now it's just a cheap blade grinder. But we have a Chemex that we use, or if we are feeling more on the espresso side we use a Bialetta. It's not espresso, but it's a fuller body since you get more of the oils, and water pushed through a finer grind. All of our beans we buy from local roasters. There is such better coffee out there than mass produced and it really isn't much more expensive than Foldgers. And if you think Starbucks is good coffee, you haven't tried good coffee. Starbucks burns the hell out of their beans.

I can't get behind the Keurig or any of those machines. Coffee is a ritual for us, those machines just kind of cheapen it. Plus, I can't stand the plastic waste produced by those machines. Multiple little plastic cups...

Yes, their coffee is over-roasted so all you taste is burnt coffee. Another thing to remember is the more coffee is roasted the more caffiene is reduced. My mild roast has a lot more buzz than your French.

You are paying a premium for convenience and for coffee that was roasted weeks ago and as a result has lost a lot of its flavor. I can grind my own beans, brew my coffee and be drinking it in about 4 minutes so I don't see the Keurig type machines as an advantage at all.

The Keurig does have a reusable cup that you can fill yourself, but if you're doing you're making more than one cup, you're better off with making a whole pot. I should check out the one in Peddler's Village, that place is nice.

One other thing - I store my beans in one of these vacuum canisters. There is a small, battery operated vacuum pump that pumps the air out of the canister when closed. This keeps the beans fresh by reducing oxidation.

You can pick one up on Amazon for $40.

I have a burr grinder that my wife says is too loud.  She wants to replace it with a cheap blade grinder.  I know burr grinders are supposed to be better.  But, are all burr grinders loud?  For me, this might be one of those battles that I choose to let go.

That's why I grind my beans in the garage.

Umm, how about reducing the noise level instead? Is there any way to insulate the machine to deaden the effect?

I have two Keurigs.  Both are in the garage because the pumps went out on both of them.  Now I order my coffee from a little hipster coffee joint in Bowling Green, Ohio called "Grounds for Thought".  The customers in the shop are really annoying but the coffee is excellent.

Also, I take my coffee like I take my women...........................................bitter

The vacuum coffee canister is a great idea, I may invest in one for my grounds. I've never have freshly ground coffee either, I will invest in a grinder. Thank you for the advice.

I got a Keurig and love the thing. I drink mine with no sugar and just cream. Has to be cream, not milk and not that coffemate stuff either. Outside of a good strong IPA, nothing in life I enjoy more than my coffee and cream.

Tully's has a nice dark roast coffee. Here is what I get:

http://www.keurig.com/coffee/italian-roast-extra-bold-coffee-k-cup-tullys

It is not as smoky as the ad claims.

Van Houtte has a couple decent roasts.

http://www.keurig.com/shop/k-cups/all-k-cups?hdnCategoryFacets=Brand%3AVan%20Houtte%C2%AE&hdnBaseFacets=Brand

The Costa Rica Tarrazu is good. The Africana is not bad. Avoid the Eclipse and Kenya Kilamanjaro because they tatse burnt. Some of the flavored stuff is actually decent too.

I need to give a mention for this:
