Our History

Raven Starbinder wrote:

After years of loyal service to house Kurtia a few mechwarriors were given a well deserved retirement from active duty. As an reward for their years of loyal service each of them were given Katana's with ancient battle dragons engraved on the blade by the co-ordinator himself.  They were also given special emblems to show their special status in society and also allowed to keep their favourate mech to help defend their homes and the state in times of emergency for their loyal service. After some defensive actions to defend their homes after their retirement, those few mechwarriors decided that they still had the fire and wanted to form a mercenary group.  As their success grew more mechwarriors wanted to join their ranks from within the Draconis Combine and outside as well. So goes the story of the original founding members of the old dragon battle group.

Retribution wrote:

. Maybe the ODBG was founded by retired Kurita pilots who hired themselves out to House Kurita when the state needed them (coming out of retirement when needed). After early successes the Old Dragon Battle Group expanded, drawing in pilots from around the inner sphere and extending the operational range outside of Kuritan interests.

This is very cool guys, perhaps you and others can elaborate more.

All you who know something about battletech and its cannon. Add some ideas and maybe we can flesh out a full history.

Maybe a little fanfic? A short story? My inner nerd is really shining through here, but that sort of thing is really up my alley... :)

The shimmering snow stretched out to the crest of the hill the Kuritan unit approached. Glowing crests of wind-swepped snow, backlit by the sun, shimmered in front of them as they inched out from behind the cover of the buildings at the edge of the town.

Over his Jenner's external mic, the recruit heard the roar of the jump jets from the other side of the hill, and he ducked his mech behind cover.

"Heads up, incoming!"

The shadow of the grey and black behemoth crested the hill, its box-shaped arms opening up and loosing a volley of SRMs that temporarily shaded the sun. They impacted on the building behind which the Jenner had sought cover, scraps of ferrocrete and glass raining into the streets below. The ground shuddered under the Jenner's feet.

"Spotters! Mech in D5! Let's get an ID!"

Perched on the roof of a building behind the rest of the lance, another recruit tapped his neurohelmet, zooming his retinal display on the shape as it drifted back under cover. "It's a Catapult, Chu-sa. Missile-door insignia on each wing. I mark them as a skull with a black dragon wrapped around it, and another skeleton, holding a cane, maybe?"

Chu-sa Sakuraba pondered this piece of data. Old Dragon Battle Group, here? Fighting against the Combine? It made no sense. Sakuraba had no love for mercenaries in general: they served only the almighty dollar. Even so, would a mercenary group whose original leadership had once served the Dragon take a contract that pitted them so directly against the Combine? But the color of the mech, the markings...

"On your toes, warriors. Unless our sensors deceive us, today, we face ronin, and the warriors they have recruited to join them. These are no ordinary ronin: these are warriors who have served the Dragon, and who had hung up their swords, only to be called to battle once more, not by the Dragon, but from within. Be ready for men who know how to fight, and who understand the concept of Bushido..."

Suddenly, Sakuraba's neurohelmet began to buzz, his HUD flickered, and a burst of static came through the communications equipment, cutting his transmission short. Laser blasts rocked Chu-sa Sakuraba's Catapult to the side, carving lines across his left PPC-equipped arm and his left torso, gobs of molten metal sizzling as they sunk into the snow at the mech's feet. Red warning lights flashed angrily at the damage. He glanced to his left, and saw the black shapes skimming through the snow, throwing it to the side, like fins of sharks slicing through the water. His blood ran cold as he recognized the Cicadas and Ravens of Old Dragon Battle Group's Scout Lance, their cockpits glinting with the reflected light of the sun behind them. He glanced at his radar and it crackled with static: they were under the cover of an ECM.

"We've been flanked! Evasive maneuvers! Brahe, Tanaka, back to D3! I'll provide cover!"

Sakuraba's receiver burst with static, and suddenly, he heard a voice he hadn't heard in many years:

"Konnichi-wa, Chu-sa Sakuraba. The Old Dragon Battle Group is honored to finally meet the Combine on the field of combat. Be aware that the Draconis Combine is no longer welcome here, and this planet is under our protection. We will accept your honorable surrender should you choose to offer it."

As the final words came through his mech's speakers, the Atlas crested the hill, its eye glowing, its black shape blotting out the sun. The massive mech tipped forward in a bow, and its weapons glowed to life. Sakuraba cringed as the man-made lightning of the Atlas's PPCs spat from their muzzles and ripped across the battlefield towards him...

Cheers, guys, thanks :) I had a couple of other ideas for short little vignettes like this but I'm up to my neck in exams to be corrected... something I probably should have been doing last week. Once I get that mindless drudgery done I'll get back to the real work :)

Doh. I meant to change it to Jenner in both cases because it's a mech frequently used by Kuritan forces.

ETA: not being able to edit that post is stupid.

Very nice story FerretGR, the illustrations would bring your short stories to life. Keep on coming up with these amazing stories and we could run a little comic strip of our unit's exploits.  You could base your stories on great matches we have as an group.  That would be a great promotional tool for recruitment for our merc group.

I have been keeping this kind of close to the chest, just keeping Ferret up to date. However it looks like it will get finished and it looks great. So here is a teaser.
