In recent weeks, we have been conducting extensive internal testing of an upcoming content update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Given the scale of the update, which includes changes to the matchmaking experience and party system, we are expanding testing to include select members of the Xbox One Preview program to ensure the official release is the best possible experience for all players.

The content update beta test is open to Xbox One owners within North America who have a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and have opted-in for Xbox One beta testing as part of the Xbox One Preview program. This is an opt-in opportunity and the content update will only be made available to selected participants within the Xbox One Preview program, based on the highest levels of engagement with Halo: The Master Chief Collection. On Friday, January 23, participants selected will be prompted to download the content update automatically when the title is started.

To learn more about the content update beta test, please see the FAQ below.

Q:           I’m a Preview Member, how I do sign up?

A:           More details on the program and how to sign up are available with the Xbox Preview Dashboard app on your Xbox One.

Q:           Why are you testing the content update in the Xbox One Preview program? Don’t you have internal playtesting for the very same purpose?

A:           In recent weeks, 343 Industries has been conducting extensive internal testing of the upcoming content update. However, given the scale of the update, which includes changes to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection matchmaking experience and party system, we are opening it up to members of the Xbox One Preview program to provide additional testing in an “at home” environment to ensure the official release is the best possible experience for players.

Q:           What is included in the content update you are testing in Xbox One Preview program?

A:            This content update includes changes to the Halo: The Master Chief Collection matchmaking experience and party system. We will have more details to share as we get closer to the official release.

Q:           Who will be eligible/invited to participate in this beta test of the next content update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection?

A:            Xbox One owners within North America who have a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection and have opted-in for Xbox One beta testing as part of the Xbox One Preview program will be eligible to participate in this program.

Q:            Why are only players within North America eligible to participate in this beta test?

A:            Due to the beta testing session times, we are selecting players within North America to ensure optimal population.

Q:            How are participants being selected for this beta test?

A:            Xbox One owners within North America who are part of the Xbox One Preview program, have a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection with the highest levels of engagement are who we are targeting.

Q:           When will the beta test of this content update take place?

A:            Exact dates/times are subject to change, but the current plan is to test the content update during the evenings of Friday, January 23 through Monday, January 26.  Specific session times will be shared with the selected participants.

Q:            If I am selected to participate, how will I get access/download the content update? When will it be available?

A:            On Friday, January 23 (exact time to be determined) participants selected will be prompted to download the content update automatically when Halo: The Master Chief Collection is started.

Q:            If I’m selected to participate, am part of the Xbox One Preview program and have automatic downloads enabled…will I automatically get this update?

A:            This is an opt-in opportunity and the content update will only be made available to selected participants within the Xbox One Preview program.  On Friday, January 23 (exact time to be determined) participants selected will be prompted to download the content update automatically when Halo: The Master Chief Collection is started.

Q:           If I’m selected to participate, how should I report a bug in the content update beta test?

A:            If you run into any issues while checking out the beta update, be sure to use the Feedback app on the Xbox One (for Xbox One Preview program participants) to tell us about it. Hold the power button on your controller, then select "Give Feedback" to launch the Feedback app.

Q:           What will be the anticipated file size of the content update for this beta test?

A:            We are still determining the final file size of the content update, but participants should have 1-2GB of hard drive space available.

Q:           Will I still be able to use multiplayer matchmaking against other players that don’t have this content update?

A:            No, during the time of this beta test when this content update is installed, you will only be able to be matched with other players that also have the content update.

Q:           After the beta test of this content update is over, will I be able to use multiplayer matchmaking against other players without this content update?

A:            In the days after the conclusion of the beta test, we will issue a content update that will then allow matchmaking with all players, as it worked prior to the beta test.

Q:            When will be the final public release of the content update to all owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection?

A:            We’re currently focused on gathering data and feedback from Xbox One Preview Program members and will have more details to share soon on the public release of this content update.

Wow. Sounds like a major overhaul, not just another band-aid. On the one hand, it's pretty pathetic that the game needs such a complete overhaul 3 months after release. But on the other hand, the problems seem to run so deep that their series of band-aid solutions haven't been cutting the mustard. I'm still getting dumped into a multiplayer lobby after I quit campaign missions pretty frequently.

Unfortunately the game is already pretty much dead, population-wise. Good job, Microsoft. Way to kill your cash cow franchise by rushing a pre-alpha build to market for Christmas. Greedy asshole dipshits.

So we've moved from the alpha to beta stage. Making progress on this game. Pretty soon 3v4i will be able to launch it.

So we are playing the alpha right now? What the hell? Seiously I've been a huge Halo fan, but when Halo 5 gets released I will not buy it til I know it works and I'm a huge sucker for Halo game releases. They are going to have to earn it.

I 100% agree. In fact, I'm to the point now that I almost won't consider any launch day purchase because there seems to be this idea of "ship it and fix it later" from developers.

I have a feeling this is more about getting H5 matchmaking ready than it is for MCC

This game has single handedly made me go back to Gamefly. I used to not bother with it because I knew I'd want any multiplayer games to play with friends but there's no way I'm shelling out another $60 to support a broken product. As much as I want Halo 5 to be awesome and fun you'd have to be a complete moron at this point to expect anything but another bug filled launch.

I popped in MCC last Friday evening to play some H2 campaign and have another look at the graphics upgrade. As soon as it started to load a pop-up indicated MCC needed an update... Nearly 800mb worth. I canceled out.

I did (and my daughter did as well) receive a message from XBL saying they extended our gold membership by another month "for our continued support for MCC".

Good choice to cancel the download with another huge untested update on the horizon.

I was accepted for the Beta but it never happened.

Such a major disappointment.

When this game works, I don't want to play anything else.  Sadly, the population is so low that I can't find matches in my favorite playlist anymore (BTB) and I don't see people coming back if and when they get it right.  Halo 5 was very fun based on the beta but I'm not buying it anywhere near the launch, it's ridiculous that such broken games are getting rushed to market like this.

I find it utterly mind-blowing that Bonnie Ross still has a job in this industry, let alone as head of 343. If someone had fucked up this bad, I would have fired them months ago. Apparently Microsoft doesn't care since this sorry excuse for a game did sell a lot of consoles for Christmas. Come to think of it, she probably got a huge bonus.

Probably only because the H5 release is closing in.  MCC has to be one of the biggest screwups in the history of major franchises.  Players have already jumped ship so fixiing it now is pretty meaningless anyways.

FYI - 343i are re-thinking the need for an update beta. May go straight to consumers.

Probably because the community has gotten so small, it wouldn't be much more than a beta population anyway.

I laughed my butt off when I saw that they were doing a beta for an update. I couldn't believe it.

This game and BF4 have made the decision for me not to do pre orders anymore. I'm sick of broken games.

Right now? No. Once it's patched to where parties function correctly and they fix uneven teams, then I will hop back on. 3v4i still has a long way to go. In addition to the above, they need to fix hit detecction on a few games, update halo 3 to the latest version, fix maps, fix map selections, etc. I can handle the latter, but I'm not touching it until networking/parties are fixed.

This. There's so few people willing to give it a chance, we will have to schedule something just to have someone to play with.

You could try the single player campaigns if you want. Those are pretty solid. The rest of the game is a broken piece of shit 3 months after release and counting. Nothing works. The last two times I tried playing it, out of a total of 3 hours trying to get just the lobby to work with my friend, we played a total of zero multiplayer games and two co-op campaign levels that both crashed a few minutes into the levels.

Some highlights of the Master Chief Collection since release:

- It took a couple months of updates before you could even walk in a straight line in Halo 3 (not kidding)

- It took a couple months of updates before the game could figure out how to make even teams. You'd search matchmaking with a party of 4, get a match, and then find out that the teams were split up 6v2 or some stupid shit with your party playing against each other instead of together. I haven't tried to play in a while, but I hear the game still can't make even teams consistently.

-Even on LAN it's a disaster. There have been a few tournaments, and it takes them like an hour to play one ten-minute game because the game is constantly crashing or fucking up in a million different ways. Some of the matches have had to be replayed 3-4x before they can finish one game that actually works.

-The game is so fucked up that 3 months after release, they're now talking about running a public beta test for one of their updates. LOL

Save your time. Even as a free download the game is a ripoff. Steer clear of anything made by 343 industries.

The beta update has been cancelled. They are doing internal testing through another company fro what I heard. Now remember, 3v4i did internal testing on MCC and we all know how that turned out. Lol.

oookay, single player it is then.

Did they try to just port everytin gover to the new OS and think it woul dbe fine? Sounds that way. Oy. No wonder it's freebie inclusion.

I don't know what they did, but the problems go way beyond technical difficulties with porting to a different OS. For example, the game's interface was full of typos and stuff, which suggests a level of shitty workmanship that runs deeper than a few technical difficulties. And I'm pretty sure that figuring out how to divide 8 players into 2 even teams isn't some kind of OS-specific technical challenge. Let's see... 8 / 2 = 5 vs. 3? 6 vs. 2? Apparently this simple task has been baffling their engineers for months now.

Have fun with single player. All the campaigns are fun in different ways.

We're still waiting for when it will work for 8-16 olayers without difficulties. Anything less than what we already have is not worth the bother.

I suspect the next big update will be the kicker. At least I hope it is.
