I think the next hope for CE purists is CliffyB's new free to play PC-based FPS. Whenever it comes out, that is.

Less than a month and Destiny will begin its retail journey.

Judging by comments I've read all over the Internet, Destiny will be everything from a huge success to a dismal failure. When the rubber hits the road, we can play it and make informed decisions. Be assured, a true test of Destiny will take a month or more. Too many features for a rental to flesh out. It'll be fun trying out all the new stuff, even if Destiny fails.

I already know I'll get more out of Destiny than I have from Forza 5 or Tomb Raider for XB1 combined and I consider those to be really good games.

I think Destiny is going to be a really good game. Just from playing the beta it felt good to learn and discover new things and I really thought the game play was enjoyable.

I don't care about the casual/competitive agruement. Casual want balance and competitive players like to have fun. You will always have different opinions within each group. The biggest thing that 343 needs to do is make a good game right out of the box. Almost all long time Halo fans casual and competitive alike can agree that Halo4 was a mess and not ready for release. They also made some really poor chooses that never got fixed (like PP and plasmas in loadouts). They took something like the jet pack and nerfed it to the point where its just not fun, but still pisses off players who don't use it. They put in Infinity Slayer to help give weaker player chances for power weapons, but that didn't work because now good players are getting killed by weaker players and good players get more chances at power-up.

I think the best thing 343 has done is taking their time with Halo5. I just hope whatever they come up with is fun for the masses.

I think we all just need to accept that games have a year life span now.  There will never be another 3-year span like there was with H2 and H3.  There are just too many AAA games out these days, and only so much time.

Really I missed out on a lot of good games in 2007-2010 when I was playing H3 every night for 4500 games.  I won't do that again, and I don't think Destiny will have me playing for more than 6 months no matter how good it is.

Which falls right into my desire for Halo to have new FPS content annually. Nobody agrees with me but I know it could work if the game releases alternated Campaign and multiplayer.

Random thoughts...

My comment about Destiny making a giant step away from the competitive scene was a jab... For the mother/father/creator of competitive MLG gaming (i.e. Bungie) to abandon the competitive crowd says a lot about the future of gaming. Like others here have mentioned, it's about game sales now. The MLG crowd is just too small a slice of the market to matter. That would change if the wizards of smart could find a way to make watching competitive gaming more entertaining for mass media - like boxing, racing, golfing, football, basketball, etc. Right now, there's no money in the broadcast market for game spectating.

So... was 343 right all along in how they designed H4? What will H5 be like? How long will MCC MM last?

I'm predicting that after the Halo 5 Beta, a lot of players will look at 'old' Halo with a dour eye. It will be difficult for them to return to it. I know, I'm getting repetitive.

Deep, I think you live in fantasy land.  Halo 4 looked amazing but people still went back to the other Halos or dropped playing Halo completely.

Very few went back to the other Halo's but we don't have hard facts so it's an uselessly arguable point. My prediction stands and only time will disprove it.

Wait a sec. You said "dropped Halo completely" and that was part of my predictions from other topics. All Halo pop will drop off the charts after 3-4 months after TMCC and H5 Beta. The reasons are many.

I'm mainly talking about your claim that old Halo will be looked upon badly, which has never happened, compared to a newer Halo.  The difference here is that all old Halos will be on the same system all with MP online at once.  There isn't really a precedent here.

Some of the reasoning behind my prediction is this.

360 - XB1 Halo population split. Diminshed Halo pop on both platforms.

Few if any XB1 TMCC Halo players will ever go back and play Halo 360. So Halo pop 360 dies, all but completely.

XB1 Halo players are fewer and they will have a ton of other new AAA FPS games to play. Destiny and COD being the two biggest influences to come.

Once XB1 Halo players finishes the Halo 5 Beta, a lot of them will move on to newer games. After all, they just finished replaying all of the Halo campaigns and multiplayer maps and the newest best Halo ever. Been there, done that is the motivating theme. No matter what people say now, that is what will happen (in my little world of predictions).

It's an unstoppable tidal wave of moving forward to something new.

I'm not sure I understand the bolded sentence.  Obviously people have to move on after the Beta - it's a beta.  Once it's done, you can't play it.

Most people getting the MCC have played the other games, and want to have them on their current system with upgrades.  There is no 360 population to speak of right now as it is, so that's a bit moot.  Even when there was, H3 beat out H4 much of the time last fall.  People want to play the old games but feel like people moved on - the MCC makes people see it as new again and I think there will be a better population.  Time will tell.  But  "X1 Halo players are fewer" is not a true statement.  There's no way to tell.  But I believe that at least half the people who own an X1 will get the MCC, and that will be like 5 million people by Xmas.  Which is a lot more than the 10's of thousands that play Halo right now.

Regarding bolded, I meant moved on and away from all Halo including TMCC.

There is a 360 population though. I predict it will be very de-populated after Nov. 11. The remaining people without XB1 will find it very difficult to get a game in either Customs or MM.

Halo 3 only exceeded Halo 4 in population for a very short period last fall. It only appear once in Major Nelson's chart in October. That matches very well with the observations I was making last fall too. Don't forget, the Halo 3 playlist counters were based on 24 averages and lagged badly as far as reporting. I don't remember a time when Halo 3 beat out Halo 4. It seemed to be getting close for a very short time though. I remember Frankie saying something to the effect he would not be surprised Halo 3 beat out Halo 4 for awhile. Any ideas that Halo 3 was going to seriously route Halo 4 were little boy fantasies.  http://majornelson.com/2013/11/07/live-activity-for-week-of-oct-28/

I agree TMCC will have very good population. It will be huge, for awhile. About 1.5 months actually. When Halo 5 Beta starts, where do you think the bulk of MM and Custom population will go? Why, to the Beta of course. Move the clock ahead  3 weeks. Sure a lot of the Beta participants will go back and finish off Campaign activity in TMCC and do some MM but then what? You really think they will stay there for more than couple of months? No way. They will for the most part move into COD and Destiny or any other big FPS that is new.

There will still be a percentage of Halo players back on the 360 well into 2015. I don't think they will be playing Halo much. I think they will be waiting for Halo 5 to get their XB1. Perhaps the bulk of Halo players will be on XB1, but as I suggest, they will be moving away from Halo. I predict the big TMCC pop drop will start before mid-Februrary and then drop like a stone until March. Any new game has a sudden drop off but this will make all other previous Halo de-population looking like the bunny hill.

Actually, I doubt we'll be able to know the population figures. 343i and Microsoft seem to be moving away from publish this data.

I may have responded to you with pretty much the same message in another thread here as well, but if MCC even half delivers with what we've seen, I have zero problems playing it exclusively.  Destiny will have a hard time cracking into the rotation, let alone Minecraft and GTA5.  With the Halo 5 beta popping in here at a point, Destiny's shelf life (for me) might be about three weeks and then returning it to GameStop.

Skill, balance, I can't say much.  Exept, if you like a game, learn the game as it is presented.  It will either be fun for you or not.

as far as Halo, I consider myself a "halo fan" my time with the game the last few years would say otherwise. I am always hopeful, but I don't stay with the game.  I could blame bungie and  343...I think it is me, a few years straight with the same game gave me some burnout......I want to relive the excitement of when I first joined here like drug addict chasing the first high.  halo MCC and halo 5 will be great, I will buy them.   My length of time with them will depend on me,  not 343.

You can open Halo and look at the population number.  Halo 4 was always just crap numbers for the playlists.  I admittedly moved away from H3 to Reach and then back to H3, and then H4 but not back to H3.  I think only time will tell.  But at least we have your bold predictions here to look back on.  By that time, V3 will be gone so someone should save this thread ;)

I think the move to away from older Halos was just the obvious "new game" syndrome and that's understandable.  But the MCC will draw old players glad for the big population and old maps as well as new players who never played the old games - I know of a close friend who is buying an X1 for this and Sunset Overdrive, and he never played any of the original games.  To him it's an amazing deal for 4 games at $60 and he is excited to check them out and play online.

The Halo 3 numbers were the crap ones. Bungie said so themseleves, somewhere. Halo Reach and Halo 4 had extremely accurate (to the minute, according to Bungie and 343i) playlist numbers but only Reach had UU/24hrs.

Doodirock archived the previous site's posts so maybe he'll be able do the same again. I'd love to see if my bold prediction comes true or not. Nothing wrong with being in error for a prediction. I hardly have a reputation that is world renowned or anything. wink
