Anyone Play GT5?

This is primarily directed towards the newer members of whom there have been many over the past couple of months.

If anyone here plays GT5, we have an event that runs every Thursday evening starting at 7:00 EST and we race for a minimum of 3.5 hours every week. We’re getting close to running this for two years now and while I certainly enjoy almost every Forza race I have with this group I can honestly say I look forward to the weekly GT5 races more so than most Forza events.

That may be because we have an awesome group of regulars or (IMO) the slightest of better physics model over Forza (they’re both great, almost even, I just give the slight nod to GT5) but clearly the best option GT5 has over Forza is the ability to run(practice) the car/track while we wait for everyone to get ready and start the race. It’s a real treat to not have to wait in the lobby until everyone’s ready.

And of course it’s a very laid back atmosphere with no serious events with points or anything like that. For the most part all you need to do is show up.

In any case if your GT5 disc has been collecting dust and you’re inclined to give it another go feel free to join us. Visit the below thread for the specifics and/or if you have any questions I’ll answer them here.

We have about 9-10 regulars that show up “most” weeks, room for half a dozen more.

I just got GT5 for my birthday (platinum cheap version) and installed it today to test :)

it took 8 hours to update and install

I had to Install 19 updates some of which were massive. Again, my wheel has not arrived yet, so I'm savouring the racing until it is here, but I'll join you guys on Thursday's as soon as my wheel is here and ive bookmarked that thread.

:)

Trust me on this, you don't even want to try racing GT5 without a wheel! I've got the game and it does get some play but sadly the timeframe is just not workable for me. With the lack of good online play for me in my timezone I'm more drawn to FM4, it has nothing to do with the quality of the game that I don't play it that much.

I think I "only" need to do the 8 hours plus endurance races and then a-spec is complete.

Uero guys:

You're right, our weekly event does not work for those of you who sleep during normal hours. If the interest is there I'd be more than willing to run a monthly GT5 event during the weekend, probably your Saturday evening be the best as Sunday's usually have more than a couple events running? We could run any one of the spec cars that we use, that be easy enough.

If you can garner interest from even 3-4 Uero guys I bet at least half of our regulars would also show up.

If Parcells sees enough interest I'll schedule something and see where it goes.

I have done the series for almost two years, and I do not recall ever seeing you in any of our races.  Also, the DLC is a fraction of the game, and its dirt cheap.  The only DLC you would need is Spa, which we regularly run.  It costs $5, at most.  We rarely use the other DLC.

You have run with us enough to know that overall, we have good, clean racing.  Yes, there is more parity than typical 2Old4Forza events, but that is a good thing, since anyone can win at anytime.  wink

Gizzie raced with us for about a two month period about 20 months ago when we first started out, his feedback is more than slightly dated.

Pretty sure you're already a friend soups? I'll double check.

I agree with Parcells.  I have been doing this series for almost two years.  Its far and away the best racing series I have ever participated in.  Yes, I am biased since GT5 is my favorite video game of all time, but it goes deeper than that.  GT5 has over 1000 cars, and so we always can try something new, although admittedly, we regularly go back to some of our favorite spec cars.  Also, Polyphony Digital is still updating the game, TWO YEARS after release.  How many updates have we seen from Turn 10 in the last few months for Forza 4, even though it came out a year after GT5?  The updates have made the game immensely better and there is no end in sight.  The DLC is cheap, as is the game, which you can buy for $10 at some retailers here in the US.  Parcells runs a tight ship, he is organized and he keeps the series going, even if some of us cannot attend every race.  And, there are no FAST GUYS!  We have true parity.  Anyone can win any race, which is not typical for 2Old4Forza events.  The track selection remains amazing, and GT5 is the only online game where you can race the awesome GT exclusive tracks, including Deep Forest, Trial Mountain, Madrid, Rome, London, High Speed Ring, and Autumn Ring, not to mention the excellent real life tracks.

With regard to cleanliness of racing, this is the cleanest series I have ever participated in.  We rarely have collisions that result in the need for cautions.  Part of that is the game, since it treats damage less severely than Forza, iRacing, etc., but its also because of the guys racing.  Of course we have our incidents, but they are few and far between.

I agree that GT5 is best experienced with a wheel, but we do have one guy who uses a controller and he does fine.

In summary, if you have a PS3, and in interest in sim racing, then GT5 is a no brainer.  Come check it out.

I've run into a couple guys that can get a bit aggressive from time to time, but that's not any different than anywhere else you may go.  All in all I have a great time...when the POS TurtleBeaches aren't acting up.

Should I go out and spend on a PS3, a copy of the game and the Spa DLC?  I just might...

Does GT5 have Mount Panorama/Bathurst as well?

How will having no progress through the Career mode affect any on-line play I might engage in?  Will any of the "Spec" cars be available to me in a MP lobby if I havent bought it in Career Mode?

You know my answer - HELL YES!!!

You will have a nice garage of cars, at least 10-20, to start if you buy the XL edition, which gives you much of the earlier DLC for free, including Spa.  You get a $20 voucher which you can use to buy DLC.  When I bought my extra PS3s and copies of GT5 for my triple screen set up, I got 23 cars in my garage automatically with the game, including a 2012 Scion FR-@, a 2012, Toyota 86 GT, a 2011 Mini Cooper S, a 2010 Volkswagen Golf VI R, a 2012 Nissan GT-R Black edition, special GT5 race editions of the Toyota Prius, Nissan Skyline, Nissan GT-R (several), Lancer Evolution, Mazda RX-7, Mazda Roadster, Dodge Challenger, and a 2007 Nissan March 12 SR.  You will know ahead of time what spec car you need for the week.  If you don't have enough $$$ to buy it, don't sweat it, one of us can gift the car to you.  I am sitting on $15 million in credits (don't worry, all of them are legit), and you will be able to easily win boatloads of credits by doing the "seasonal events", which give you boatloads of credits.  We spend a lot of time in our lobby doing "Recommended" cars, which are available to everyone, whether they are in your garage or not.  You don't have to tune at all.  The bottomline is that you will have no trouble running with us, even if you choose not to do any of the career events.

I will definitely look into it then. Tough to justify with the holidays and all...Might have to give the wife a little extra business and work some oT. If I can get it.  I'll be a tired man.  LOL

Of course you know Lawyers response and of course he speaks the truth, albeit Parcells can’t confirm or deny the US pricing he’s quoting you.

As far as “is it worth it?” or not only you can answer that. I can tell you this, Parcells bought the PS3 when GT5 came out and it took me 18 months before I used my PS3 for anything but GT5 and to this date that amounts to nothing more than 3-4 movies watched and GT5 used with my PS3 (no joke or exaggeration that’s 100% true). The PS3 purchase was well worth it.

Also, I highly doubt our Thursday nights will fizzle out any time soon but in full disclosure I think you are nearer the west coast so unless you can get on real early you’re limited to 1.5 hours of racing (weeks with spec cars, the spec races start at 9:00 EST) before us on the Atlantic coast who’ve been racing for 3+ hours nod off.  Frequently others stay on racing after Parcells calls it a night but I can’t speak too much to that other than the odd time I know the racing goes past midnight.

But as far as the spec cars go you’d love that Snappy because, to be honest, if Lawyer or Parcells don’t make the effort to build a spec car for the week we often go without (even though everyone minus our controller user has built a spec car). That opens the door to the classic cars you love to build for the weekly spec cars, you can literally go wild. Again, in full disclosure, you should know Parcells will undoubtedly whine and complain over your stupid car choices but will race them every week with curtailed enthusiasm. cool

This sounds perfect for me!

i am expecting my wheel from fanatec any day now, I honestly can't sleep with excitement :) for an old guy I am literally acting like an over excited kid.

The feeling I have in anticipation of my rig, is similar to when I got my mega drive 2 with Alex kid built in for Xmas.

My entire spend is close to £1000 so I hope it's worth it in the end.

i have GT5 and only have the platinum edition. I have not ran 1 single race in the game, I have no dlc and I have no vouchers in my box. That said, I'll buy the DLC if it's worth it. As long as I don't have to sift through years of single player to be able to race online with cars i dont have/own... I don't know what cars I have (never entered career mode) as I have only tried a 3D race in arcade and a few laps of seca on the pad while I set it up (3D settings etc).

The game seems good, the engine sounds are embarrassing though, if anyone ... ANYONE... thinks these engine sounds are not sub par, then they have a very questionable agenda and/or standards.. That said, the rest of the game, from the quick arcade mode tests I did were good. I really like the handleing, much less like driving on ice and much more like being on road.

I can join in a few races with the pad with you guys until my wheel arrives if this ok, but don't expect much in the way of accuracy using that POS controller though :)

The engine sounds are OK if you leave the car stock, but the problem is that when you add exhaust, etc., it changes the engine sounds such that they sound similar from car to car.  Forza handles engine sounds much better.

Those observations are pretty accurate from Parcells perspective. of course you can join us with or without a wheel and you do not have to run any career mode to run with us....follow these instructions...

1) send "Parcells2" and "Zero7159" a PS3 friend request.

2) On Thursday go into the community tab of the GT Life mode and you will find a gift car from Zero....this weeks spec car (Craig - please gift Hairy this weeks spec car (a non DLC version))

3) Again under the community tab find Parcells2, select me and then to the right select my lounge and simply "join" in. I probably won't accept your friend request until shortly before race time on Thursday (7:00 EST)

You may be just a tad over excited about your Fanatec equipment but I'm sure you will be happy with them. At that costs you must have purchased the Elite wheel and clubsport pedals? Your face will light up with joy when you see the pedals and the Elite wheel is some fucken smooth. I've been using Fanatec for almost three years now and had one issue with my original PWTS but Fanatec replaced it no problem.

Looking forward to racing with you!

RE: DLC

Simply put you do not need to purchase any DLC to run with us.

That said, all of us have purchased both the Spa and Motegi tracks and we run them regularly. if you do not purchase them we simply won't run them when you're on but at less than $10.00 for both tracks it's a steal.

Parcells Zero, I'll get on the ps3 and add you guys... I'm not sure what my PS3 ID is to be honest? I'll have to check... I have a total of 0 friends on my PS3 and I have no idea if I kept it the same as the Xbox  :D

ill probably buy the tracks just for the hell of it. Im in the uk though, so I'll have to check the time difference, but as I work from home I can usually find my way around most things, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. I can't drive safely with a pad though, hence I though it best to wait for my wheel and a few driving lessons lol :)

Yea, I bought the elite wheel, the clubsport pedals, csr shifter, and .... and....... Have just placed my home made rig build on hold... as i am about to order the new CSL and the CSR Elite F1 rim as Thomas has announced they are both due for shipment before Xmas :)

So my finished rig will be,

55" 3D 1080p LED HDTV

CSR ELITE

CSR ELITE F1 Rim

CSR ELITE Shifter

ClubSport Pedals

CSL Cockpit (formally known as RhinoSeat GTR)

I can't wait!

I usually go to be about 1am so I could sneek a quick 1hr in... Weekends are probably better though. I work from home though, so during the day when I supposedly supporting business IT Infrastructure I can easily be on the race track :)

Any time between 10am - 4pm uk time is easily doable for me, I can remote in, race, apply patches, race, reboot servers, race :) that sounds like a good working day :)

Question re: GT5 do you guys use "normal" "reduce flicker" or "sharpen" in the display settings menu. I enabled sharpen and thought it looked well, except more jaggies, but normal looks like a complete smear fest.

I will say that GT5 in 3D is breathtaking... I literally found my self laughing out loud and watching the fireworks on the rakly tracks, and crashing regularly due to its beauty. Very little lag and, as long as you stay on tracks with very few wire fences (mountain tracks etc) it looks mind blowing.

I'd happily sacrife track accuracy (such as wire fences and power lines and aerials etc) for "made up" items such as a tyre wall or iron fence instead... I think all these thin single pixel wires all over these tracks make it a real jaggy fest. Laguna seca is awful to look at, but mountain view or whatever it is called (no fences) looks absolutely stunning, as do the rally tracks etc... Unless the game runs in native 1080p and was produced in 1080p etc then all single pixel lines in fences or overhead wires should be removed from these  games, it would make the game look much better in my opinion.... I'm all for detail and accuracy, but not when it looks so cheap and ugly.

Rant over :D
