College football, opening week...

Games I saw:

Cal vs. Nevada: 24-31...It was just 2 years ago that Nevada went 13-1, beating Cal and ending Boise's BCS bowl hopes along the way. Don't know why Pac12 fans on other sports forum boards act like this loss is the shame of the conference.  True, last year they sucked after losing Kapernick & Co. but Ault has apparently rebuilt and has them back in form. They always give Boise a game (again, except for last year when they sucked). If anyone embarassed the PAC it'd have to be Colorado losing to Colorado St. or possibly Wash St. getting blown out by BYU, 30-6. Don't think anyone thought they'd win but expected a little more offense than that with Leach taking the reigns this year.

S.Carolina vs. Vanderbilt: 17-13..... I don't know a lot about either team but yeah, being from Boise I was rooting for the underdog. They went into halftime tied @ 10 and Vandy led in the 3rd 13-10. Shaw made a TD pass late in the 3rd for the last score of the game. However, with about a minute and half to go in the game Vandy went for it on 4th down and the reciever missed the ball on a blatant no-call pass interference. Really could of been a game changer. Anyway, on other football forums, Gamecock fans seem to think this is gonna be their year. While most teams can look rusty on the 1st game, I'm thinking they're not taking the SEC east.

Michigan St. vs. Boise St. 17-13....Congrats to the Spartans, their defense looked very good and the running back, Le'Veon Bell was awesome. We couldn't stop him all game & by late in the game it just got worse as our D-line wore down. He literally carried the offense I'd say. After returning only 5 starters from last year I don't think many Boise fans expected a win here, just hoping that Petersen had managed to get reloading & rebuilding off to a good start. On defense I'm generally pleased...Our passing defense & qb rushing looked good but we have to find a run stuffer. Other teams are going to be looking at that and licking their chops, especially Nevada & their pistol offense. Our offence had me cringing over a lot of things and we never did make an offensive touchdown. But the only thing that really pissed me off was some of the play-calling. Trying to run it up the middle was obviously NOT working yet they kept calling it. D.J. Harper has never been a run it up the gut type back like Doug Martin was. He has always been a bounce it outside guy and excelled at it. Yet time & time again they called it up the gut. Also, I facepalmed when our qb Southwick slid 2 yd.s short of 1st down when he could have made it. Anyway, I know Petersen will make adjustments and we'll improve. Holding a big team like MSU to a close game isn't too bad for a mostly new non aq team.

Anyone else have any comments on the games they saw?

what are the odds that this game gets chippy early? florida ain't a powerhouse right now, but nothing will get you geeked up to piledrive a guy like him coming into your house and planting a sign calling you out.  i normally wouldn't watch a UF game unless they were playing my beloved Bayou Bengals, but this one might get watched now.

Geaux Tigers!!

lol, this coach gets it and should be working in the SEC. Now if his team could somehow get ready for what SEC football was really like in the trenches.

BYU vs Washington State:  BYU is a much better team than most people outside the WAC and MWC give them credit for, so i wasn't surprised at all they beat Wazzou.  You gotta give Leach a little time to recruit the players that will make his scheme sing, then we'll see some fireworks.

Boise State vs Michigan State:  Boise gave Sparty all they could handle and almost came away with that game.  Yeah, the size difference wore them down a bit, but those kids have heart and never gave up.

SC vs Vandy: wow, great game:)  whichever team won i didn't care, but it was a fantastic game to watch.

Oklahoma vs UTEP: whoa! utep took it to OU and it looked like OU didn't know how to take it for the LONGEST time during that game.  So, either OU is off their game this year and are about to get violated by the teams in the Big12, or those miners out there in the desert can ball.  how much you wanna bet OU doesn't sign another game-and-game with UTEP?

Wisconsin vs No. Iowa: really?

Clemson vs Auburn: wow, this was another fantastic game.

Texas vs Wyoming: was i the only one amazed how the Cowboys took it to the Horns? this was another case of the "big boy" getting punched in the mouth and not knowing how to take it.  eventually the size of the Longhorn linemen wore the Cowboys down and the running game just ground them down, but man, the first half was fun to watch.  there was NO fear in the Cowboys in that first half whatsoever.

Iowa vs No. Illinois: wow, really? Iowa is supposed to be a front-runner of the big10?

what was the deal this weekend?  there were at least 6 games where FCS or "lesser conference" teams came out and gave the so-called AQ schools all they could fucking handle and a whole lot more.  i don't know about anyone else, but i love this kind of football.  it gets everyone both both teams geeked up about the game and every game really does mean something to both teams.  from what i could tell, the only major difference between a lot of the big-time schools and the rest, was the size of the O and D-lines, and SOME of the big league schools have depth.  the games were decided in the trenches, almost every time.  The Bama-Michigan game was a perfect example.  The Bama lines just wore the Michigan guys down through size and time.  course, this game started like shock-and-awe from the ring of the bell.  Bama came out punching and Michigan just got shut down.
