Glad you are here Atyeo!  I am trying to recruit as many people as I can for our little Saturday crew. So help spread the word anyway you can.  We are all about the same level (except Church who cheats with his Xbox controller) laugh We all help each other out so the races are close and fun.

Ok, I have built a PC Rig for gaming, Coming over from 2Old4Forza, Some of you know me, or wish you didn't. I will get blamed for everything in this group from here on in, probably. I'll be playing with a controller, even though I know a wheel is better.

What software should I be picking up for racing? What is the most played racer between everyone? I'm pretty sure my old copy of Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed isn't going to cut it anymore.

Welcome Jamison!

for controller tips talk to church he's seemed to setup his up to forza like style....

as for software most of us have every available game on the market lol but the only current series were running ATM is a btcc series on rfactor which is on a summer break till sept and will start up the second half too many people have been busy enjoying the summer :)

other notables are rfactor 2 it just left beta stage, great game just a little lite on content ATM but it won't be long till its flooded with mods and will be the go to game for most

not sure how deep your pockets are but iracing is an excellent but frustrating and expensive game...only worth it if your going to dedicate a lot of your time to it....Cadillac may still have a free 3 month membership available ill look into it for ya

if your looking for games to bridge the gap between console racing and hard core sims I would suggest raceroom experience by simbin and project cars.  Both are in pre Alfa phase and are available but are in a bit of disarray being so early in the build.  I am a tester for RRE it's a free to play but you can buy tracks and cars of your choice at an affordable price.  Pcars unless you bought into the game while funding was available you'll have to wait till release next year....another game that looks promising but has not been released is assetto corsa which SHOULD be released soon ?

Other than that race 07 which we raced before is a great game if your a touring car fan but steam messed up our files and we got sick of trying to fix it so we switched to rrfactor

if you need help or have questions just ask and will do our best to get ya sorted...pc gaming can be quit frustrating at first trying to get things set up properly and accustomed to things so don't give up if it gets to much cause once you get it it becomes very rewarding, addictive and expensive lol

your go to guys for certain games....

rfactor 1&2 knight and shreb

iracing lawyer and tartan

pcars & raceroom myself

forza church

and for some good southern state humor neverender ;)

cheers!

Howdy from Texas!!!  Glad you could join us DCJamison!  Hope to see you on the track soon.

If you have any questions about race 07, rfactor, rfactor2, iracing, project cars or any other pc sim titles, somebody here will be able to answer your questions. Between all of us in this group somebody will know the answer or be able to find it.

Hey DC, welcome mate. Shame we are on Hiatus as Kurupt said it gets hard to get everyone together through the summer, but maybe we can get kurupt to throw up a server once you have got rF one sorted so you can test and get any help you may need, in the meantime I'll send you our Team Speak server info so if you need help setting up we can just arange a meet on Team Speak.

Welcome to the Dark Side.  Sim racing will never be the same again.  161  Good to see you're still alive buddy!

If you're looking for some weeknight races, we usually run something in rFactor around 7-7:30 each night at GoneBrokeRacing (http://www.gonebrokeracing.com).  I may know someone that can get you in over there.  151  Current schedule includes Playboy Cup (MX-5), Skoda TC, DRM (late 70's Group 5), FIA GT, Saleen Mustang Challenge, Historix (vintage GT & TC) & V8 Supercars (put on your big boy pants for this series).  Sunday morning activities include Mobil 1 Supercup & ALMS/LMS (currently running GT1/LMP2).  Most fields are around 8-12 cars with the exception of V8 Supercars, which has been pulling over 20 cars every 2 weeks.  Lawyer hosts some iRacing sessions on Sunday mornings prior to the PMSC races.  Spaz also has his Spazcar rolling using the VHR mod for rFactor on Tuesday nights.

Efnet (http://www.efnetsimracing.com) runs Historix events on Sunday nights (though we are moving to a Rolex series for the next few weeks) and now Group A Touring Cars on Monday nights.

Welcome Slowpoke!

As Neverender mentioned, most everyone here is PC.  Hit up our brothers in 2Old4Forza (most/all of us are there too), and you can probably find some peeps to rub doors with.  151

Welcome Slowpoke,

Most if not all of us are PC sim racers now but I am sure there are still some xbox guys around. Maybe we can convice you to join us on the PC side using either Race 07 or rFactor. I have never raced on a console but those who made the switch to console rarely go back to the console. The realism and physics seem to be that much better in the PC titles.

Glad to see you joined us and hopefully we can see you on the grid.

p.s. Race 07 and rFactor do not require a rocketship of a PC to run since they are from 2007, so don't feel you need to have a top of the line machine to run either of those titles.

Yup as has been said you have found your way into the PC Racers part of the site, the Forza guys are a cool bunch and will soon get you involved in any one of many races they run. I don't think too many are using Horizon, Forza 4 is the main game of choice. But they have painters tuners and race schools, a one stop shop for all things Forza :)

As you guys can tell from my post count, I am not new to the site, but I am new to PC Racing.  I have, in the past, played the Colin McRae Rally series games and Dirt Series on the XBox.

I recently picked up Richard Burns Rally, and it makes me want to get a racing wheel as I am struggling with some of the techniques using the controller and there is no way I would even think about using M & K for a racing game. The XBox 360 controller makes it difficult to apply light throttle or braking.  I am thinking about getting the Logitech G27 racing wheel and I am wondering about the learning curve with using a wheel and is it a significant advantage over using a controller, once mastered.  I am open to other suggestions for racing wheels so it doesn't have to be the Logitech.

I am also looking for any suggestions of racing titles to pick up on PC.  I am currently thinking about getting the new WRC 4 game coming out next month (I am afraid that game may be a little too arcadish) and probably one of the first two Dirt Games (also a little too arcadish).  I will also probably try out the F2P RaceRoom game on Steam.

Welcome cardiac, when it comes to Rally sims the only options are Richard Burns and rfactor for Tarmac stages which in my opinion is the most fun. Although I think there is also a pretty decent handling mod for WRC 3.

As for the wheel, either the Logitech driving force GT, G27, or Fanatec CSR are the best wheels to start off with, the DFGT is the best budget option but has no clutch or seperate shifter.

The learning curve can be a daunting task depending on what you choose to drive, but after a good practice session you'd be up to speed in no time.

Welcome to the club Cardiac Wolf!  I cannot stress enough the importance of a load cell brake.  The entry level set are the Fanatec CSR Elite pedals that run $150. I spent a year with my dfgt wheel and pedals and then got the CSR Elite pedals and once I got them all I did was kick myself for not getting them sooner.

Here is a good video explaining what a load cell brake is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ChKoSDkLLA

Getting a wheel that feels good is nice, but won't make you faster. A load cell brake pedal setup WILL make you faster. Good luck and hopefully we will see you on the track.

btw I am also from the states, I live in Texas.

TBH i have to disagree here Neverender a loadcell isnt that important i think. i mean they both do the job with the G27s it was more 'muscle memory' than anything and i think my braking has not improved with the loadcell its much of a muchness imo

Hey Cardiac, you are on a slippery slope. Your wallet will suffer. A wheel is sooooo much better than a controller, yes you can still be fast with a controller but a wheel is the tool for steering a car in the real world and it is the most immersive way of doing the same in the virtual. But that is just the first stage. A good wheel will need bolting down, the FFB (Force feed back) will prevent any idea of sitting it on your lap, so some kind of wheel stand or cockpit is on the cards. Pedals, yes load cell is as Never said the dogs danglers. Then there are shifters, displays, triple screen, Butt Kickers...the list is endless.

As for sims, you'll find a thread for all the main racing sims here, no rally ones though, we are mostly road racers. And here again most of us have most if not all of them, and each have our favorites. rF1 is probably the most  used among leagues, and older sim but still much loved, Race 07 another popular sim and dirt cheap on steam. iRacing the love it or hate it sim, probably the most fully featured online sim. Then the slew of next gen titles rF2, Assetto Corsa, pCars, Raceroom etc.

So much to think on, and we will happily spend your money for you ;)

Hey Cardiac,

I also started out with an x-box controller. I used one in rFACTOR for the PC for almost a year before getting a FANATEC GT2 w/clubspot v2.

I will tell you that I was faster with the controller till I got used to the wheel, but I stuck with it because the wheel is SOOO much more fun to drive with.

What ever you get, make sure it has a FFB, clutch and a seperate shifter. You will love it.

Welcome cardiac!

what ever your wallet can afford and what you feel comfortable with,  I ran forza for yrs with the controller and was alot faster with the controller than with the wheel.  If your dedicated to racing a wheel is a must for simulation factor but can get pretty pricey and a bit frustrating at times but worth every penny  once its set up.

You mentioned the g27 which goes for about $250-300 which allows another option for the same price the fanatec xl pack will be in the same ball park

both in which I own the g27 is a great wheel light and precise but can get a bit loud when rumbling awesome shifter lots of buttons for mapping and a decent set of pedals

fanatec gt3 rs xl pack...the wheel looks and feels nice in your hands, smooth quite multiple settings for 5 game profiles, elite pedals have a load cell and works pretty well

ingame I find the wheel very heavy and stiff and being fanatec your bound to have a minor issue or two along the way....but overal it's the best reasonable priced entry level high end tech

if they have the deal still I'd choose the csr wheel, same tech bigger lighter rim....oh ya the shifters that come with the package are well.....terrible lol

either or are a great starting wheel, check Craig's list or kijiji you might get lucky and score a g27 for cheap

cheers

Thanks a lot for the welcomes and your suggestions.  I actually have my eye out on EBay for the g27 with the wheel stand pro included.   I have seen the wheel stand before and they are made speicifically the wheel you need.  If I were to get this, and then later decide to upgrade the pedals to the load cell pedal set that Neverender suggested, would I be able to properly secure it on the stand that was designed for the G27?  I was hoping the model requirement was for the wheel only and the pedals would be more flexible.

Once I have settled on a setup,  I will be looking for some other racing games, like rfactor2 and Assetto Corsa, and race 07.  Hopefully, there will be a rally mod for rfactor2 like there was in the first.

Knight, what is this "Butt Kicker" you speak of?  It sounds like something I will want to stay away from.  I will also avoid the Triple monitor setup and larger display monitors for now, although, my 24in monitor may start to look kind of small with the Wheel Stand creating more distance between me and the monitor.

Ok, some of you know me already from 2O4F. Just thought I'd say hi as I may be dipping my toe into some PC racing.

With Forza 5 looking less and less likely to be Fanatec compatible, certainly at launch, I'm not one of those at the moment who wants to ditch the Fanatec setup (elite and csp's) and spend £300+ on a new set up. I'm initially going to wait it out in racing terms (though I'll buy day one and LCE - and then just paint).

So what I'd appreciate is a suggestion for something on PC, with a decent handling model. Eye candy not that important. Heres the rub - not interested in buggering about massaging software into life, which was the reason I moved to consoles, so I guess RF is out.

Oh, and suggestions need to work on an I5 laptop with 6gb ram, 1gb Radeon graphics card which will be hooked up to a reasonably sized LCD monitor. Old but gold maybe?

Thoughts appreciated.

Simple. rF1, and Race07 will both run fine on that. These are both mature sims and not that hard to set up. The trick with rF1 is just installing the lite version for every mod you install. This way you avoid 99% of the pitfalls, Any of us here can talk you through it and though at the start it may seem a little daunting you'll soon be using it like a pro. Once you have got the hang of it there are literally hundreds of tracks and mods to choose from.

You should also find most the next gen sims will run fine as well, you may have to back the eye candy off a little but for a single monitor set up, that system should do okay.

For in race comms we use Team Speak and have our own Team Speak server, so when you are ready to start setting things up I would be more than happy to talk you through an rF1 install and the ins and outs of lite installs and how to get tracks into the game.

Both here and GBR rF1 is the sim we use for series, and it would be worth your while sighning up over at GBR as well, they have series running I think just about every night and for you Sunday mornings which is when I get to play with them.

Welcome to the dark side :)

I'd second what Knight says on sim choices.

You should grab rfactor and join us for some BTCC racing/rubbin.

Where's the best place to go for rf or 07.
