Thanx to Cotter Im giving this a try...I appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this...Kinda messed with it a little but what does "Balance Modifiiers" do and how do I know if I need them????
I implemented those to be able to mess with either the spring or roll-bar balance (more over- or understeer).
In general I don't even touch the springs (general balance through a corner) & with version 1.2 I rarely have to mess with the roll-bars (low-speed cornering) as well. If you want to adjust high-speed cornering balance you should tweak the aero settings, keep in mind that this will affect your spring strenght.
I have used your calculator on 3 of my cars that I have already had good lap times in and 2 cars that I couldnt get a good lap on if my life dependend on it..All of which I had to put in a race transmision in order to use the gear calculator. For some reason I couldnt get good results using your forumula on your baseline tuning..
Tires: fwd: F = 29 R = 30 rwd: F = 28,5 R = 29 awd: F = 28,5 R = 29,5
Alignment: Camber: F = -1,1 R = -0,9 Toe: F = 0,2 R = 0,0 Caster: 5,4
Ride height: As low as possible & Front 0,2” lower than Rear
Braking: Balance: 47% Pressure: 119%
Differential: fwd: Accel: 25 Decel: 0
rwd: Accel: 35 Decel: 10
awd: F Accel: 25 F Decel: 0 R Accel: 75 R Decel: 25 Split: 25/75
BUT......I was able to get about 2 seconds on a lap using the your tuning calculator...It seems I have been runing my cars too soft in the springs/roll bars. But I still had to soften them up just a little using the calculator..It was giving me to much oversteer..GREAT TUNING CALCULATOR...
Looking over them now I think i could make some adjustments to the baseline settings. They are definately more suited to experienced drivers right now.
Don't adjust a car build if it works well for you just to be able to put the race transmission on it. It can cost a lot of precious PI-points while generally only giving a marginal advantage. If you use the gear calc keep in mind that the last gear it gives you will hit the top speed you entered @ Power RPM not at the redline RPM.
I usually fiddle with the top speed to fit what I want from the car. Road America is usually a good track to set your last gear unless you are building a car for Le Mans or the Nordschleife.

Thanx for the tips...Now that you mentioned that I remember that I didnt get a great time on my better cars just by adding the race transmision...I guees its a trial by error kind of thing...One question about the top speed on the gear calculator...Once I add all my upgrades (race transmisioin included) I will benchmark to get my top speed. When I enter that in the gear calculator along with my final drive/first gear info, the top speed is different than what I benchmarked...My question is what top speed do I want to enter??...Normaly what I do is on a track I will mess with the accel/speed until I am close to top speed in 6th gear and what ever that speed is I want to use right???

The top speed the calc gives you next to the gear is the speed @ redline RPM. When I'm building a car I also take a good look at the powercurve of the car to determine how many gears I'll run, then I set final drive & first gear to be able to spin the wheels a bit & be in the powerband when I get full traction. Then I enter benchmarked top speed & adjust according to needs.
I'll gift you my tune I used on it right now. And I messed with everything since I had to go back to a stock tune because I was previously using Max's tune for the race prior to creating it.
Wow....so its not as easy as I thought It was......(determine top speed and move gears to make that happen)....Ive never messed with gears before so this is going to take a little messing with....Im looking forward to messing with them.....

The calc spreads the gears out evenly, so that's one thing you don't have to think about. Once you've tried it a bit you'll get a feel for how it works then it becomes child 's play.
Made some minor adjustments to the gear calc today, first gear you will now have to input the speed you want to reach in first gear instead of the gear ratio.
I also added a sheet with the updated baseline settings, with some notes to it so people can see what changing some settings does to the car.
I've tried the on a number of A & B class cars on different tracks and I. Find the tune to be way to loose for me. Is there a way to have it provide a tighter set up? I'm not looking for screaming fast times but rather a car that is stable for my driving style. I have a base tune that I'm using in front engine RWD cars that is working for me but can't seem to get one for other types a d was hoping this would help with that.
I've just changed the second post here with a guide to make tweaks to the base settings based on the behaviour of the car. Didn't write it up myself but it's one of the things I use if I want to tweak the behaviour of the car. Maybe copy & print it so you have it near you if you're tweaking a car, after a while you'll do most of the stuff without it.

Carrol Smith knows his stuff and those are good books. When I sold my collection of "car" books recently I kept all of his books.

I'm Cooter not Cotter. But your welcome anyways Kat. I personally havent messed with the modifiers. But yea, Cobra, what are the modifiers for?
Sorry Cooter....slip of the fingers..
....what did you do to the Lotus.....did you mess with the gearing at all??

I really must try it.

is there any way to avoid downloading it as an excel spread sheet?
file
download as
There you can download it as an openoffice document.
Ok, im a total technophobe. Ive downloaded it, but how to i use it?
