New Releases: Week of May 10th, 2020

Happy Mothers day! I told my mom she was a gamer now as I constantly "see" her playing Candy Crush. She used to rag on me for playing way back in the day until she discovered Tetris on my NES. I would catch her playing that all the time. Granted she didn't play much else but she did love fitting all those tetrominos into place! She was teaching back then and gave me the excuse that she was practicing spacial geometry but I knew she was actually having fun. When you are yelling at the screen when the tetrominos dropped faster, or when she put one in the wrong place, or both, that is the sign!

Sadly not much on this list would appeal to my mom but that doesn't mean it wouldn't appeal to you or yours. Let's take a look at what this week has in store.

Ion Fury
Platforms:
PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release Date: May 14th, 2020

A new release by 3D Realms and I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing that right. Yes, the development studio that brought us duke Nukem is back with a new title...ish. So yes it is a new title but Ion Fury is actually built on the original Build Engine that powered Duke, ROTT, Shadow Warrior and others. Does that mean it looks bad or plays bad? I am going to say "No" to that even though it does look a little dated. However Ion Fury looks like it could actually be fun playing a lady Duke.

Super Mega Baseball 3
Platforms:
PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One
Release Date: May 13th, 2020

So it isn't MLB and the franchise never made any effort to be MLB which is both good and bad. From the trailer, it looks like gameplay may be fairly close to something like MLB The Show but with players that border cartoonish. The animations and expressions are fun but if you LOVE baseball I can see how it may be offputting. The good news is SMB3 supports up to 4 players local co-op! I mean that' s good once all the restrictions are lifted but for now, if you have to have your baseball as real as possible then you need a PS4 and MLB The show. The rest of us will have to be content with Super Mega Baseball 3.

Deep Rock Galactic
Platforms:
PC, Xbox One
Release Date: May 13th, 2020

I made sure to add Deep rock Galactic because the developer goes by the name of Coffee Stain. Given our new writer goes by Coffee, I thought it would be wrong of me NOT to include their game on this week's list. Basically a FPS where up to 4 players mine in procedurally generated caves. I assume to build something at the end because why else would you mine? Then again, Minecraft has no real goal either but I guess you do build things.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer
Platforms:
Switch
Release Date: May 12th, 2020

I played this game 21 years ago when it first came out. The game was fun for a while but Star Wars Episode I: Racer is no Tie Fighter or X-Wing or Tie Fighter vs X-Wing. I remember that it got pretty repetitive and old fast. Back in the day, the game received good scores but I am not sure whether it will hold up to todays standards. You prequel fans will probably gobble it up but you're weird that way.
