What would it take?

What sort of RPG could reunite the somewhat fractured RPG market? An action RPG with a strategy subgame on a mobile platform? An a MMO RPG with social network hooks? An out and out straight up JRPG with western tropes?

The Companions Trilogy would make a fantastic back drop. Do them with fantastic cut scenes, epic music score, stay true to the books and NO DLC. Start developing the MMORPG Dragons of Summer Flame at the time you start making the first game of the trilogy.

As long as you combine the best elements of eastern and western RPG games this will be a slam dunk. The stories are already written. It will give the oppertunity for everyone to experience one of the greatest high fantasy epics of all time. It would culminate with an MMO in the battle of good vs evil while the endgame portion be good&evil vs total annihilation. You tie in all the major people from the books.

 

Maybe we shouldn't be looking to the next best epic. Sometimes, getting back to one of the better older ones done right would be the "next best thing".

Best trilogy ever!  I actually purchased a limited edition leatherbound copy a couple years back.

RPG are so mission focused that they don't really feel like RPG's.  Crafting has been left to the wayside.  I'm currently playing GW2 but this goes for most of the MMO's I have played in the past few years, and I have tried a lot of them. 

You start a new character and guess what, your in the noob area.  Don't go over there cause thats for lvl 15 - 20, it says so on the map.  Don't waste your money on anything cause you can get all the gear you need from the drops.  Now hurry and level so you can join everyone else at the end game.  Crafting can be done but nothing ever breaks so people only look for stuff when they have leveled and need to upgrade. 

What I consider some of the best MMO's I have played are the ones that not only had good mission running but ones that included the crafting comunity.  Things broke, good weapons could only come from crafters, you could run missions or just craft and still level. 

A good current example I think would be Eve-Online.  You actually get to role play there, you want to be a fighter go for it.  You want to become a business tycoon, go for it.  The items people use in those games are made by other players.   They are also lost to other players in open PVP areas. 

I really do enjoy GW2 but I miss my time in SWG when my guild had its own city with shops.  It was fun sometimes to login with no intention of leaving the cantina and just managing my shop.  It was an option I had on playing the game.  Now games are made to where its all about getting to the end game so you can pvp.

RIGHT! I think TSR did a really lame game based on the Companions but well, it was really lame. Somewhere along the line I lost all my copies of the books. Maybe someday I will pick up another set of hard copies.

I may have a paperback version of the trilogy (in one volume).  If I come across it when I get around to setting up the library and unpacking the books I'll let you know (if you're interested).
