Xbox One External HDD questions

A friend of mine let me borrow his Xbox One for an extended period of time. I asked him when he wanted it back, he said "when a great JRPG comes out on it...".

We both laughed and I went home and hooked it up.

So...since it's not my Xbox...I'd like to keep his hard drive cleaned off as best as I can. If I get an external hard drive, can I move all of my content (installed games, gamer profile...etc.) to the external and run it off of that?

Also, what is the maximum size that the Xbox One supports? And does it support USB 3.0?

Thanks guys & gals.

More importantly, what is the minimum ext HD. USB3/256GB min

You can move games from one storage device to another.

Key is that it is a USB 3 drive.  I am using a Toshiba Canivo 2TB drive so you should be able to find one that will easily hold all game data you generated on the internal HD.

I don't know if there is a max size, but I'm currently using a 3TB external.  I believe they reconmend that it's a self powered HDD with USB 3 and the USB 3 port is on the BR drive side. You can select in the settings section to have everything you instal go directly to the external HDD.  I don't know if your profile gets saved to external.

I'm using a Seagate-brand 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive. It's self-powered & USB 3.0, and also currently $119.99 on Amazon. The setup is ridiculously simple too. Plug in the HD, the console will auto-detect it & prompt you to format it, then you're good to go.

Saw a seagate 5 terrabyte for $129.00 today, but it wouldn't say what the rpm was. Wondering with USB 3.0 if it matters?

USB 3.0 is mandatory.

Yes, sorry, what I meant was, with USB 3.0, I don't know if RPM speed matters...

3.0 is needed, and will work with my 2.0 PC as well. laugh

Today only, newegg has the following on sale:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822149521

4 TB usb 3.0 and usb 2.0 compatible.  Not 5 TB like Seagate, but still a great price.  I use Toshiba Canivo external drives for my XBONE and as backup drives for my desktop and laptop.  Never had a problem with them.  Don't need that much storage?  Amazon has a 2 TB Toshiba drive for $85.  Not in a hurry?  Check newegg every Saturday morning.  The site has some ridiculous weekend deals.

Looking for opinions.

Any reason why this Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (STDT2000100) wouldn't be a good External hard drive for my XB1?

The external drive has to be formatted to be compatible with the XB1 which means that any embedded apps/software in the drive will probably be lost.  You would wind up paying the price premium for  nothing.  I can't speak to the reliability of the drive, but you can get a 2 TB 3.0 drive for about $90 from Seagate, Toshiba, or WD.

As luck would have it, I just picked up two like shown in the link for $99 each. That's a steal in Canuck-istan.

You're correct about the apps but I didn't need them anyway (free to download). The cheaper Seagate drives do not have as good a ventilation so that is why I went with this one.

I think the Seagates are the commonly pointed at for heat. Just from reading some reviews.

Not saying your sources are incorrect but mine are only warm to the touch after hours of playing. Nothing I'd be concerned about, normally.
