Xbox 360 used mostly for Video & Music now, not games

More than half of the time people spend on Xbox Live is devoted to watching videos and listening to music, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi told the Los Angeles Times. "What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment," Mehdi said.

The Xbox 360 isn't a gaming console; it's now officially an entertainment center that includes games, and it's becoming more popular with this angle. Today households spend an average of 84 hours a month playing games and using other apps on Xbox Live, up 30 percent from a year prior. To compare, the average household watches 150 hours of TV each month.

Even before Kinect, a tool that has always made more sense as an entertainment control rather than a gaming one, Microsoft has wanted the Xbox 360 to be "the heart of connected digital entertainment," as HBO senior vice president of consumer technology Otto Berkes put it.

Today Microsoft added MLB.TV, HBO GO and Comcast Xfinity TV apps to its lineup, which already includes Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Zune, Last.fm and others.

Nearly all of my late night Halo friends will play a couple hours of matchmaking and then go to bed.  However, they leave their 360 on and watch Netflix or Zune movies while they fall asleep so these statistics do not surprise me at all.

The fact that I use my 360 for Hulu and Netflix doesnt mean I play fewer games on it than I used to before Hulu and Netflix.

My stats show I haven't played a game since December, but I've got 3 xboxes getting pretty heavy use as WMC extenders.

I'm not sure how long it's been like this, but, the 360 can now stream mp4 files from my pc over my network. This is what I primarily use my 360 for, and it is how I watch 50% of the shows I do.

Mine is used pretty much 100% for games.  I have an original XBox (from the first week they come out) that I modded and installed XBMC on.  Anything else, we use PCs, laptops, tablets or our phones.  I'm an IT nerd and and surrounded with that crap.

I"ve got three systems, one is an arcade that is a 'streaming tuner' it doesn't play games.  The other two play a mix of games/streaming but mostly gaming.

Our Wii is a Netflix box for the most part. Just recently got a working 360 so I don't have any specs on it but I would suspect it will reflect the observations here - gaming and then TV/chill afterwards.

My 360 is my kid's dvd player by day, my gaming machine by night.  I'd say it spends more hours gaming.

I watch a lot of netflix on mine, and would be using HBO Go and ESPN3 on it it Bright House would let me.  Instead I use a laptop for those two.

before 7pm our xbox is all hulu and netflix. Then in the evenings its more hulu/netflix for half of the nights. When a new game comes out we game most nights, but right now Im mad at ME3 and I beat skyrim, so its back to mostly streaming video.
