TV died. Help?
So my old Magnavox 32" TV died on me a few months back. I think it's the power supply. When you plug it in, the red status light comes on, but when you try to turn the TV on, either the red status light just goes away, or the TV will turn on the screen for about a second and the status light will go green than off. I think it's the power supply. Anyone here have any experience with anything like this? Model ID 32MF337B/27
I had an old projection mitsubishi that acted similar. $400.00 capcitor. I opted out.
Took it to a repair place today to get a free esitimate. Sent some pictures to a guy who repairs these a lot and he said it was the capicators would should be pretty cheap for me TV. Was just going to try it myself but need some of the tools to do it.
if it's anywhere near $200, don't bother fixing it:

I wouldn't try to replace them unless you know what you are doing. If one is charged and discharges to you you may not see tomorrow.
I was gonna say, don't capacitors store and release energy?
Yep, .High Voltage. 0.0001 amps will stop your heart if I recall correctly.
I personally wouldn't be too concerned about capacitor voltages and such for an LCD television. Pretty small stuff compared to what was in CRT televisions. Also, capacitors don't hold charge indefinitely. It bleeds off fairly quickly. Just don't get into the TV for an hour after last plugged in and you should be safe. This next story is not a recommendation but more of a reality check. My Dad was a TV repairman many years ago. In their younger days they were known to charge a Cap and then toss it to someone. Hey, everybody starts off young and dumb.
They are only 1000uF caps. I took an electronics call for 2 years in high school, so I know how to sodder. Found a local repair place that will take a look at it and confirm if those are the problem for free. I was just going to do it myself, but mind as well get a pro to look at it. Plus I lost the tip to my soldering iron, solder, and my solder sucker so can't do it anyway. The power supply is $60 on eBay if that is the problem more than just the caps, so no way I will be paying more than that to repair it.
Mine shows reruns alla time?
Don't attempt it..
So it is the power supply and guy wants $75 to fix it. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and attempting to repair it myself. Just need to get some solder, something to remove the old solder since I can't find my pump, and the 3 caps.
Good luck on your adventure. :)
Went to get the caps today from Radio Shack and they wanted almost $2 a piece. Looks like I'll be looking around. I also will not be paying their prices for solder and the desolder tool I need.
so, $6? that still seems like it's cheap.
Usually you can find them for under a $1. The one I went to also only had 1 and I didn't feel like driving to the other store. Going to see if I can get them cheaper. Also really need to find the rest of my soldering supplies.
So I went to replace the 3 bad caps and noticed another was bad. So after replacing all 4 of them I now have a working TV again :)
