Topic Update Notifications - Private Message only?
I was really happy to see the easy tracking of updates return to the site. Unfortunately mine will only allow private message notifications. The option is greyed out where you could previously change it from PM to email.
there were problems with the email notifications so doodi disabled it. i think with everything else going on, it is either not making a return or at least was moved to the back burner.
Without the email...its kind of pointless. Since instead of getting an email with a link to go straight to a commented topic..I still will have to keep checking the site until I see a box full of PMs.
Is there an ETA for when the "new and improved" site will do at least what the old site did?
it's something i hope to see return soon too, but i saw nothing giving any idea if or when by going back through the other threads.
if any of use regular users knew anything, you would be one of them becuase you were involved in all of discussions i was able to find that related to this.
It basically just became too much of a pain in the ass to post regularly and follow conversations...so I stopped.
Which I hear a lot of others have done.
So I guess thats a solution right?
Anybody got a better one?
geeze, i hope doodi doesn't take the same path. things would not only stop getting better, they would fall to shit in a heartbeat.
i see improvements to the site on a regular basis. there are tons of tweaks to make and it takes time. so i'm sure eventually this would be something that he addresses, but i wouldn't hold my breath until it happens.
giving feedback helps him determine what to work on and when to attack it. try not to get frustrated because one of the things you would like to see doesn't get ranked #1 on the "to do list".
i've posted a ton of shit here. some has already been taken care of, some has been worked on with no resolution (such as the email), and some has gone to the wayside at least for now. i'm going to keep filling doodi's plate though and hope for the best.
PM's should still send out emails notifying you of updates so there should be no reason to keep checking the site for an update via PM. As wam said, direct email had a separate issue attached to it, but I'm still actively working on things (just got a new full time job so time is short).
I'm sorry for your deep seeded hostility toward the progression of things with V3, but I am doing absolutely everything I can with the time I have. I know some maybe have stopped posting regularly, but we also have a huge upswing in posts tied to Divisions and other new games like SWOTR and ME3. So while some have possibility taken a break from posting because of our lack of email notifications, many others have soldiered on and kept conversations lively throughout the site.
As for the current design, PM notification should ALSO send you an email notifying you of an update. While this is a stop gap until direct emails are working, it does allow for any post to be followed on 2o2p without needing to subscribe manually and gives you both email and PM at once. I hope to find time this weekend to work on direct email but I think this is a pretty big step forward over all.
I don't have a deep seated hatred. It just unusuable. I mean by your own statements when you say "progression" it implies "moving forward." I don't think anyone can argue that we have done the opposite of that. Right now I don't have anywhere near the functionality of V2. We have taken a step backward and are working toward having the same functionality we had. I understand that V3 offers the ability to go BEYOND that...but currently the site is less usuable than it has been for the last 5 years.
If you want lots of regular posting and activity...things work best when the thread are "turn based" for lack of a better word. I can post a comment and then go about my real world activities. When friend posts a reply, whether thats 5 minutes or 5 hours, I get a little bleep bloop on my work PC, or my smartphone, and just like that I click through to the thread and post, read the next part of the conversation and post a reply.
If lots of people are online, you see the posts going back and forth fast and furious. When less are online, I know that post is still waiting for my "turn" and I have a notification waiting to make sure I don't miss anything.
Just like a game of words with friends, but we are hitting up the site.
The current solution with PM messages doesn't work. Yes you can set the PMs to trigger and email. But now you are getting a notification, that you have a notification.
All I get in the email is 8 notifications that I have private messages. I can't tell which threads, if there are multiple per thread etc. I then have to go to 2old2play.com, click into my messages, then drill down on each one, then go visit the threads, then delete the PMs that got there to notify me and trigger other notifications.
I am not just speaking for myself when I say many of the people I used to "talk" with almost every day on this site just stopped posting because it has become so cumbersome.
I have no specific ill will for V3. I don't care what it looks like or what smileys it has. If it had the same functionality as V2 and we were working our way through broken or glitched new features...it would be something different. But we took a step backward in usability and current functionality. To a certain extent I am even okay with that...I just bristle when people piss on my shoes and tell me its raining.

Only no one is saying it isn't broken. Instead it has been said several times that I'm working to fix it and even extrend on it. For instance you didn't have the ability to follow EVERY type of content in V2, however this is currently possible already in V3. So while notifications are admitedly borked, other areas were extended on. I have to look at things as a whole and like I said while you might see other people talking less, I see much larger numbers in other areas of the site (and these are not new members having these conversation).
So yes, notifications are shit. The thread about emails notifications has been up for a while and is well documented showing our progression with that. With this stop gap currently in place, people can now at least follow all their content on the site. Does having an additional click suck? Sure, but given that this wasn't possible 2 days ago, I think it warrents the tag of being "progess".
Points made and taken. Let's agree "notifications are shit" and still be friends. :)
For the close knit group of post whores I pal with, this is an important feature. If can donate or rejoin SCC to help move us from "shit" to "V2" on the notifications front...I'm onboard.
I wish it were a money issue. It's just a time issue. With my new job my time is fairly limited. Not that I don't mind people donating to the site in order to help with our server costs.
I will say, I'm extremely close to a good mail solution and really it is the last piece of the puzzle in terms of notifications. Being able to track all content site wide was really a big step. I don't think it will take that long for direct email to follow.
I just added email only as an option for auto-notifications. I'll be adding SMS to the list as well if people would rather get text messages for site updates. Please let me know if emails are working so I can trouble shoot any issues. Thanks.

Sounds good. Any old threads will stay on the PM notification setting until you manually change that within your notification settings. Any new thread will automaticly send via email after you change the Default send method in settings to mail.

and it didn't say i got a PM. it was a real email.

Glad to here . I'm going to set email as default then so PMs get moved to only being used for Messaging between members. I'll add SMS as an option if people also want to follow the conversation on their phone as well.
As always let me know what else is pure shit so I can take a look at it and move things forward. I'm looking at a better format for the forums next, but it's a rather large section to build out. From there I'll probably tackle the SCC.
