He gets something very different from games than me.

Well considered, but completely over-thought in my opinion.

The " deeper ", role of games is that they serve as a gentle introduction to using technology. They make digital accessible to older farts, and little kids probably get weened on a Wii rather than comic books or tv shows.

Make the technology fun, and people will embrace it more in other aspects of their lives.

In the end, I just don't buy into the idea that there's any profound experience to be found in video games because their basis is escapism, not the provision of solutions or guidance for our daily dilemmas.

Then again, maybe I'm over-thinking it.

I'm just glad someone has a different take on it.  I would agree on his point that it helps bring up points of dicussion on difficult topics with the kids; they come up in games and it reminds me to have that talk regarding that subject even if it is later and I use what happen in the game (or even a movie) as a reference.  I always realize that although my children have been blessed with my genetics and intelect, they are still impressionable and god knows what bull crap these schools and society in general try to feed them.  Its a good reminder to talk about the truth... but after we finish killing the hoard or covenant ;)
