It won't be cross platform, but I am interested in it.  I would say right now i may even opt to get this over an xbox 720, could go either way right now.  But i'd like to see Steam take initiative and create in the very least a seemless voice chat thing and possibly a lobby system that is game independant so they all work the same.  Might be a pipe dream but it would be nice, these are two of the biggest weaknesses in PC gaming right now.

When i played Diablo 3 earlier this year, first serious PC game i'd played in over 10 years, i was still text chatting with people I was playing with.  Hello 1990's, that needs to be fixed.  Ya  i know mumble exists and what not but still , voice chatin PC games is a little rinkey dink.

Suddenly a million master race, pc elitist douche bags' heads exploded.  How are they going to look down their noses at consoles now?

It would never go cross platform.  Why would Sony or MSFT allow steam to be on their console?  They all have their own network for purchasing games.

I agree they suck in comparison, but nevertheless they will only support their own.  I am still surprised MSFT or Sony have not jumped on board with release day downloads of games.  That would  be their best way of getting their game shops off  the ground.   Just says to me they don't have the infrastructure to handle it. Now the smart thing for them to do is just contract with Steam, leverage their infrastructure and take a cut on all sales.

Sony has bumped up their release day downloads lately. Ass Creed 3, NFS, Dishonored, RE 6 to name a few. Some have even offered a 10% preorder discount making a new release $50 instead of $60. They need to have a 'preload' feature next.

That is smart.  I have not seen this.

Agree.  you can make a killing with a 10% discount and preload feature.

It's not going to be all rainbows and unicorns.

He also warned that a Steam Box PC might be a far more controlled and less open-source solution than people might expect:

Also, I'm not interested in them finding another medium to push Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2.  Show me some new IP.  Show me something that can beat XBox 720 or PS4.  Otherwise I'll pass.

not sure how useful this will be. they just added big picture mode and I've already been using steam in the living room with either a wireless key board and mouse or xbox controller.

If I didn't have a PC that could play PC games I would be picking up the steambox over the other consoles.  PC gaming is cheaper, tons of free games, free mods, amazing steam sales, humble bundle etc. and just better experience from presenation to community support/development etc.  but I don't see a need to own the steambox if I have a pc that I can games on.

Microsoft isgenerally careful to not piss off it's partners.  If they did release day DL, they would compete directly with resellers .  So i'm sure that's why they haven't gone forward with that.  I would guess that for big titles, if everyone is selling them for 60 bucks, a huge chunk of reseller business on blockbuster releases would be lost to Microsoft especially if you could pre-load it but just not have it work until midnight launch night.  WHo would want to go stand out in the cold for a midnight launch when you could just turn on your console and start playing right away.

I've recently moved my PC into my living room so that I could try "Big Picture". Honestly, I doubt I'll ever go back to consoles after this generation. Why? My main gripe with PC gaming was that sometimes I just want to sit my ass on a couch and play. After sitting at a desk all day the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit at another desk. Aside from a few glitches, that I'm confident that Valve will fix, it's been a great. Also, the cost of PC gaming is so much cheaper. I just can't justify the cost of games that are being asked for on consoles. Example, I wanted to play Castle Crashers with my daughter. $15 was too high. Then Steam had it on sale for $5. You can't beat deals like that. With the upcoming Steam Holiday sale, I'll be able to stock up on games for the entire year.
