Apple/Google Cloud Services

What's the pulse of the site's membership on these services.  Do you view them as an advancement for your personal digital experiences, a disguised attempt at data mining your digital profile, or somewhere in between?

I really like the services, but there's no doubt that especially with google that data mining is a big part of it.

I don't trust google at all.  And i actually try and protect myself a little but by spreading my stuff across multiple vendors.  I have my cloud storage and calendar on Microsoft Live/Skyrrive, emal on yahoo and my video game stuff tied to google.

Google definlty farms data, that's what they do.  I'm not sure how much Microsoft farms profile information but they are buying up more advertising companies so I wouldn't be surprised if they're now as bad or worse than google.

It's incredible, now even AutoCAD is over the web.

One thing on security. I believe its easy for these companies to access your information from the PC as it is from the Web.

The Security Now! podcast did a review of most of the major cloud storage solutions recently..like in the last 2 months.

There are software solutions out there that encrypt your data before sending it to the server so that:

1:  They cant mine your data

2: Whatever data gets out (either via hack or subpoena) is just worthless gibberish.

The bottom line is that the RIAA could (and theres been some evidence that is has happened) ask the cloud service provider to supply them with the userids of everyone that has a copy of a particular song saved to the service.  Since its 2 private companies working a deal to screw you and not the government forcing them, its legal.
