Any Juicers?

I recently bought a juice machine, and today I made my favorite drink so far. 1 large lemon 1 large lime 3 peaches, softball size (make make sure you remove the pits) about 20 pieces of watermelon, 2 inch cube-ish It was great! Not one flavor came out on top, so it was a delicious blend. What are your favorite recipes?

I've got a buddy that swears by it.  He does morning and night, but rarely juice.  Tends to put a ton of nasty greens in there.  He did lose like 40 pounds with juice and exercise though.

That does sound good. What style juicer do you use? I have the centrifugal kind (for hard vegetables). I'm wondering how it would do with watermelon because it seemed like a lot of waste with grapes. Do you peel your citrus? I always just threw my lemons in whole (never tried limes).

I was truly inspired by the movie I saw on Netflix Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead. I went on a seven week "juice fast" for my first time out of the gate (lost 50lbs w/ almost no exercise). I would definitely recommend newbies ease into it with a lot smaller time spans, but I was curious how far I could take it and I'm too impatient to take things slowly. Not to sound all hippie, but it definitely gave me several defining moments of introspection and clarity.

I plan on returning to it, maybe a weekend here and there, but I got burned out on it and it is a lot of work. I'd love to be at the point where it substituted breakfast.

We juice every other day now, but I used to juice everyday.  I currently use the Omega 8003.  My normal juice consist of : chard, lacinto kale, carrots, celery, zucchini, cucumber, garlic, and bell pepper.  I rotate spinich and collard greens, but when I use collard greens I throw in a apple.  I only drink about 8 ozs and cant image living without the juicer.

I believe the juicer is a brevel kind...? It has a grater that looks like a coffee filter. I peel the citrus because the manual said to, but my brother said he doesn't usually. I find watermelon and cucumber provide the most juice. Someone recommended just pure watermelon juice, but I haven't had that one yet.

I had a juicer and hated it. The juice often tasted like shit and it was a 20 minute process cleaning all the little parts. Instead I've been making green smoothies...like this:

The vita-mix is bad-ass...If you can claim such thing of a blender. You can throw whole apples into it and they get pulverized.

I juice a lot and use the Jack Lalanne <sp?> version. It can be a little bit of a pain to clean if you use it three times a day but nowi buy my fruit at Costco and juice enough for a week. Usually I do juice in place of one meal a day after also watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead like someone mentioned above.

Watched it as well.  Did you do the 30 day juice fast?  Obviously you need to watch your calories like anything else, but did you find it enough to feel full in the morning and not PIG THE FUCK OUT by dinner?  I'd really like to try it since I pretty much feel like shit every day ATM.  After getting the new job + 2o2p + Freelance + the LAN I don't really have much time on my hands to eat right.

No I did a 30 day but we juiced in the morning and afternoon and then ate a lean protein with fresh veggies for dinner. Whether it makes sense to go total juice is dependent on weight usually. For the really heavy I think it's probably a good move...for you maybe not as much as that loss you'd see after 30 days would be tough to sustain. Smoothies (as mentioned) canbe a good substitute if you are smarter about how it's made. For the month that I juiced I went from 168 to 155 for what it's worth.

Ultimately, I prefer juice as a supplement to healthier meals and augmented by working out. I try to run/bike/swim 5 days a week so I can probably fudge more than others.

That's kinda of what I wanted to hear.  I wouldnt mind doing it in the morning, having a REAL lunch and then before bed.

I did the 30 day but like wwhat was mentioned above, I had to have some lean protein and vegetables for dinner. It sucked because I work at a culinary school and while I am having my juice, some idiot student comes and tries to tempt me with bacon-wrapped filet or ossobuco but I somehow found the strength to decline. I got passed the 30 days, lost about 20lbs of fat (converted about 20 more into lean muscle)... then a month later reverted back to eating whatever my students put in front of me or whatever I feel like cooking at home. I gained the weight back but I would do it again - the first few days are the hardest cause you're miserable but by day 5 or 6, it's like night and day. By then, your body's expunged all of the crap that you get from processed foods, fast food, etc. and all of a sudden, you're full of energy. Again, damn you FAT, SICK, and NEARLY DEAD!

I've done a couple of juice fasts over the last several months. You actually stop being hungry after the 3rd or 4th day, and then it is pretty much a breeze. If you can get through the initial nights of hunger (which really is just psychological) I find that the juice is enough to keep me satiated for the most part, and then after several days, I have to almost force myself to drink juice because my body at that time seems perfectly happy with just water. It really is amazing feeling your body work through the cleansing.

I think if you're looking to detox or lose weight, a true fast is a great way to do it. If you're just looking to eat more healthily, then a replacement like mentioned above is great. I would like to be able to do a long term fast and then adjust my eating to include juicing a couple meals a day...that's what I'm shooting for now.

If you add a peeled banana to your juice, you won't get much juice out of it, but you can definitely taste it in there. It adds a great flavor to whatever you're making.

I have a Jack Lalanne...I love it. The pulp is very dry and cleanup takes only about 5 minutes if you do it right away. I've been replacing 1-2 meals a day with juice for the past month (except for this past weekend), and I've lost about 20 pounds. I've taken on a few short term juice fasts (the longest lasting 15 days) and would really like to take on a long term fast shortly.

I do peel my citrus, but leave as much of the pith on as possible.

Anyone know a good veggie juice recipe, like V8 style?

I've tried the "green juice" and after drinking it for two weeks, I can't even stand the smell of it without getting sick.

We've been rocking the Omega Big Mouth for a couple of months after our Juiceman Jr. died (after about 10 years). It's awesome - highly recommend. And I recommend getting it from Discoutjuicers.com, that guy is great.

We do it daily. It's typically a mix of whatever is on hand for greens, but a typical recipe would be something along the lines of:

1 Cucumber,

1/2 of a lemon,

5-6 ribs of celery,

5-6 big green leaves (Kale, Chard or Collard greens),

tiny handful of parsely or cilantro,

1/2 cup broccoli,

2 apples or 2 small oranges or the skin and center of 1/2 a pineapple.

That's kind of what we've been rockin lately. Carrots might find their way in there in replace of something as well. I also like taking the juice towards the savory side, doing ginger or garlic, pulling out the fruit and using carrot instead.

Damned you Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead! I did a 30 day juice fast and now do a 10 day juice cleanse every other month. It's great cause you feel so energized once you get past the first few days. I usually cram a lot of kale (at least 3 heads), a slice of ginger, 2 large carrots, 6 green apples, 2 oranges or mangoes depending on what I have in my fridge, a sliver of lime, 3 kiwis, an ounce of mint, and 2 pears into my juicer and that usually gets me through the day. I'll water it up a bit as well. I can't go 100% juice though because i have to keep my protein intake up so I'll supplement with some lean chicken breasts that are pan seared in PAM. That's the worst part of when I juice because I don't season the chicken with anything so it's the blandest part of my diet. The best part of the diet is when I'm done with the cleanse - I'll run to the nearest In n Out for a Double Double!

The only thing I don't like about juice in general and juicing is that it becomes an overly processed food.  Gotta watch fructose intake and realize that fruit juice can bounce up against the high glycemic load threshold.  Better off with veggies and some fruit to make it palatable to you.

But,  it is absolutely a way better option than other high glycemic load foods(carbs), junk food, fast food, grains, yadda yadda.  And although I side with "eat your food not drink it" it is more convenient than taking a piece of fruit on the go.  Pros outweigh the cons by a mile but you still need to be wise about it and realize it's still a calorie game.  People juicing mostly veggies are dropping calorie intake drastically vs fruit juice.

My fav was Tomato, Carrot, Celery.  Sometimes a hot pepper added, sometimes a wedge of apple, and often a small amount of another veggie tossed in like broccoli, beet, red cabbage, etc..

I also don't like the juicers that separate pulp from juice.  Pain to clean.  I prefer a good blender and use Ninja brand to make things like this for people and slushy drinks.

+1

Lotsa greens/veggies and soem fruit for flavor, bananas rock. The less separated, the more good going into your system. Also, juices put less pressure on your digestive tract, another plus. And your antioxidant intake goes way up.

Kitchen Ninja here as well.

Let me know what you think. You may need to add a little milk to the mixture depending on your taste.

If you are looking to use juices as meal replacements, I would stick with doing a blended smoothie rather than a juice. You'll get all the fiber that is offered, helping you maintain during the day. We do juice as a supplement rather than a meal replacement. You get a big boost of nutrient but not the volume of fiber. I haven't seen the movie, but I don't know that doing a 30 day fast as your "break into juicing" experience is the best way to go. That seems like a good way to never juice again. Do it as you can, build up your palate, and enjoy it. That's the best way to create a habit. Just my opinion, but that's how we've done it in the past.

^^That's part of why I switched to smoothies. I paid for all that cellulose. And with juice only I'm a jittery mess by 11am.

Juice might be the "nirvana" in terms of packing in nutrients, but smoothies will still get you in the 90th percentile compared to any other traditional breakfast out there.

A friend of mine that is a total holistic nutrition, vegan, raw, maca-powder, bee pollen, crazy food-eating hippie does regular juice fasts for like 3-4 days at a time. I think 30 days is a little over-achieving and probably unnecessary.

At first, I admit, my first was of the class/occupation from the rpg, Rifts.

I've been thinking about going the juice route for dinners, it seems like an easy way to slip kale and spinach into my diet in a quick and easy way.  I rarely eat those fresh and prefer to wilt kale or spinach in a pan with lemon juice, but this just seems easier.

I don't think I could replace breakfast with juice or a smoothie though.  I usually try to front-load most of my calories for the day, with steel-cut oatmeal in the morning with fresh blueberries and strawberries (or whatever's in season - winter's a pain this far north) and a banana.  That keeps me full until lunch easily, and lunch is another meal that's easy to make healthy and be on the go.  But where I fall apart is dinner.  These juice recipes sound pretty great, and far less filling that a full meal too late at night.

Let's just be clear that you do not convert fat to muscle and  that when you cut calories you must intensely tax your muscles to help spare them.  Your body will canabalize your muscle to help preserve fat which the bodily can easily use as energy vs sparing muscle that requires more energy to break down into usable energy.

Be careful how quickly you drop fat.  It can put a heavy toxin load on your body.

Pyro - Good point! I guess that's why my trainer suggested eating a banana or two a couple of hours before hitting the gym on top of the lean protein. I should have listened to her but I was too busy staring at her doing yoga... what can I say, I'm a visual learner. Thanks for bringing up!
