OS for sim racing/gaming

As some of you  know I'm building a gaming PC . I'm down to a few items left in my build one of them being the operating system(OS) I received a email from NewEgg with a promo code for Windows7 SP1 64 Bit (OEM) for $79.00 dollars is this what  I should get for my build? If so is it a good price ? My CPU is a AMD FX 8350 motherboard a Asus Sabertooth 990FX and graphics card Sapphire Radeon R9280X Toxic 3GB with 8gb of ram Curical Balistic Tactical.

That sounds like a good price since I paid about $120 for mine pre Windows 8 release.

I am a bit torn on which OS to suggest.  Windows 8.1 64-bit supports a newer version of Direct X for better video rendering the Windows 7 does not support.  Battlefied 4 is a game that currently supports this version of Direct X but I don't know of any others yet, but they will likely come.  It is also a possibility that a game could be released in a couple of years that requires Win 8 or higher, kind of like when BF3 was released about 2 1/2 years ago, which required Windows 7 or 8.  I doubt many developers will do that for Win 8 unless/until it takes a significantly larger share of the market.

I am a little worried that older games may have a problem running on Windows 8/8.1 so maybe someone that currently uses Windows 8/8.1 can provide some more info on this.  Whichever one you choose you should go for the 64-bit version.

That build you are working on looks pretty awesome.

:From a Sim-racing slant:

Most of the guys I know are running Win7 64 bit.  There have been some guys that are running Win8...some of those have had no issues what so ever, and a couple guys had enough issues (keep in mind this was when Win8 was still pretty new) that they bagged 8 and went back to 7-64.  At this point in time, I don't think there is any necessity or even benefit to running Win8 in regards to sim racing at this point...but that's not to say that Win8 doesn't work better in other areas/programs.  If Knight doesn't see this, shoot him a PM.  I believe he has run both OSes and can give you better pros/cons of each in regards to sim racing.

I am running both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.  My personal preference for gaming is Windows 7.  Although Windows 8.1 will also work fine, Windows 7 has been out for a while now and all of the relevant drivers work with it.

Yeah I'm one who went back from 8 to 7, but that had nothing to do with gaming or sim racing, just hated 8, 7 is still perfectly good option for all sims, and is the cheapest option so unless you have a good reason for 8? Win7 64 bit is a solid well supported and stable platform.
