Next Gen

There's been a lot of speculation about the next generation of consoles.

Many of you play on the PC and consoles.  As the generation winds down, more folks seem to be switching to PC while awaiting the outcome of the new cycle.

With decreased backwards compatibility, "always online", used game sales making the transition interesting to observe, what are your thoughts on what the next six months will bring?

I think the consoles this gen will be designed to squeeze all the money out of you as possible. Advertising, microtransactions, profile only always online video games that will drive us insane.  Consoles that take it even one step further on the road to "It does everything".

Fuck no I say. I just want my console to be my console. I'd love it to be able to watch bluerays and dvd as well, but honestly, I dont need it to be a computer as well. My pc does a better job at that stuff. I also do not nbeed to pay for premium online services and be bombarded with Advertisements "MICROSOFT"!

I cant see me owning one of the new consoles if they keep up these antics. I am pretty sure I am making the switch to pc gaming. I have two pc's as well as 1 of each this last gen consoles, including a second xbox.  Its time to smawrten up with my money. I'll invest in the pc that surpasses the next gen consoles and quit screwing around with consoles that want to be pc's. At least thats my mind set lately.

Po is right inline with my thinking. That is why I am typing this from my spiffy new rig. When you total everything up, I easily spent what I spent on the PC for my consoles. The days of paying $60 bucks for a busted game up front are done. I can play free to play games on the PC and if I don't like them, I can just uninstall. The last gen stuff really did not bring anything new except adding another cable box to my entertainment center. I don't want to use kinnect. I don't know what is the future for the new M$ console but based on the 360, the choice was easy to make... Get a PC for gaming.

We don't need next-gen yet.My 360 is still kicking.I don't think i will be getting the next console.Seeing as i've been unemployed for about two and a half years,i can't afford to set up a gaming pc(damn wish i could, would switch to pc in a heartbeat).

The way things are going,i'm just going to quit gaming altogether. My xboxlive expires next month. The beginning of the end for me.

Peace out.

Yup, if I get any cards I would be happy to forward the codes along.

Sorry to hear it. The last year has been rough on me work wise as well. Things appear to be looking better and hopefully they change for you as well.

I'll probably end up getting a PS4 and that will be it.  I won't get the XBOX and definetely won't get the Wii U.  PC Gaming is really the best way to go if you have a PC - the games are cheaper (if not free!) and I love it.  I'll get the PS4 because I do like some of the Sony exclusives and I still have a lot of friends that play on the PS3 that I'm not looking to lose contact with :)  Anywho I'm already doing my next gen gaming right now on my PC :)

I've personally got no desire for one of the next gen consoles right now.  They seldom get powered up, though lately the PS3 gets more use than the x360 due to better Netflix interface and the BlueRay player.

90% of my gaming now is on PC, largely rFactor, GW2 and now Neverwinter.  I still like occasionally picking up a controller on the consoles, but not enough to justify the costs of the new ones.

I am taking a wait and see approach. Not too impressed with Microsoft's attitude.  Reminds me of Sony when they released the PS3 and were all high and mighty.  I liked what I saw with the PS4 but, would like to see more of how they are going to do online; that's the one thing Xbox has going for it.  Most of my purchasess lately have been on PC.

I assume Microsoft will make some adjustments to their plans after E3. But we'll see. Theoretically Sony's acquisition of Gakai will help their infrastructure.

Honestly, as much as I'd hate to lose my hard-earned 80K+ gamerscore, I'll most likely be getting the PS4 about 6-12 months after release. I'm waiting b/c these consoles now suck in quality, and my 6th Xbox just broke and I think the new ones will have issues as well. The first model, had overheating problems, disc drive issues, RROD, and now the past 3 slims I've owned, the power unit inside the console has broken in less than 8 months. Also, MS has such a crap warranty, to where every console you buy, you can only use the warranty once. So when they replace your console, if something happens to the new one, you're boned despite buying the extended warranty.

It's practices like these, the DRM issues, always semi-online(I live the country), used game restrictions, no renting. Not to mention an always on Kinect that I don't want and have to pay for, a TV tuner that I don't need since pushing the input button on my remote isn't that hard and comcast already makes me get a cable box for my HD service.

It's just all stuff I don't need in the end. I just wanna play games, yeah Netflix is nice, but my Blu-Ray player and TV both have it built in, so.... PS4 for now seems to be mainly focusing on games, and offering other services as a secondary. Which is what I want from a console, not a bunch of free to play(pay to win) games like World of Tanks, and Killer Instinct. Seriously, MS owns Rare, and instead hires another company to make it, and then only gives 1 character, and you gotta pay for the rest. Uhhh... MS just confuses me..

I'd go to PC, but there's a lot of the same issues there I have with MS, not too mention, having to learn about all the different crap and the settings.

Yah, I have to agree with GbHaseo.  I'm going with the PS4 this time around.  It will suck to lose my gamerscore, but other than that, I won't be missing much.  A lot of the games I'm interested in playing will be available for both platforms, and PS4 has some great exclusives.   The only two games that MS have coming out that interest me are Titans Fall and Project Spark, which will both be on the 360 anyways.  At the end of the day I just want to play video games on my video game machine.

I'm looking forward to a great new gaming experience, and making some new friends on this site through the PS4.   I'm sure you will see a lot more activity and new forums popping up on here as a result of the increase in sony consumers on this site.

I think I am one of the few who still operates a PC for 10 years. The Xbox has been in an 8-10 year cycle! Unheard of for consoles! No PC sits still that long and plays the latest games, c'mon you guys......people sit still if it makes sense economically; you will all go next gen somewhere along the line.  Yeah...I know....no one will see this because I am here very, very late...LOL.

I know the PC has gotten more stable with Steam, making looking for drivers, etc. less difficult.  But, I enjoy comfy couch gaming a lot as well.

We'll see what the next generation brings.

I tried out Steam 3 years ago...took a week to download Witcher....yikes! Still have items undownloaded that I paid for and never got! Wassup with that? Couldn't play Counter Strike! Next desk PC I get I will build myself, unless I go all laptop...but XBLive gives me the best service. I like what Bill Gates does with his time & money (see 60 Minutes interview). No business goes broke making a profit and we need competition in the marketplace. Sticking with Bill for now.  :)  I don't have anxiety like other folks do...just kinda go with the flow & I like new tech...so much fun!

I have been on Steam for the last 2.5 years and haven't had any problems with d/l speeds at all. I have had an issue with the odd game not running but there has always been a simple fix online to get them running.

I am leaning towards the Xbox One as most people I game with on console are going in this direction (and Halo, I admit I love Halo). Although, only a few have pre ordered it. I am with GB on waiting a bit though. I have 360 4 and 5 right now and 5 is starting to sound funny. I have also seen just cruising the forums and talking with people online that they are thinking of getting a PC.

Well either I'm a sucker for gaming, or I ended up witha really good bonus from work this summer; because I purchased both a PS4 & Xbox 1. Lets face it both systems have their pros and cons just like the PS3 & 360, but there are exclusive titles for each next-gen console that spark my interest, now as for RPG games, lthe ones that I've got my sights on are:

1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

2) The Division

3) Cyberpunk 2077 (hope that developers will show some actual game footage in the near future)

4) The Elder Scrolls Online (although I might pass because of the $15/month price tag)

5) Dragon Age 3: Inquisition (looks like Bioware listened to all the negative feedback after DA2)

Also I must be the luckiest son of a bitch when it comes to video game systems, I finally had launch 360 die out on me, that's right I never had any red ring of death, overheating, or any other hardware issues, and my PS3 has been working just fine as well, hopefully I won't have any issues with my new PS4 & Xbox 1

I've always been a PC gamer but as of late I find myself more and more on the 360.  I just put the game in and play, I don't have to worry so much about the graphics being to much for my graphics card and having to adjust settings to get a smooth play.

Also with two sons who are getting into gaming its much cheaper to just buy an xbox than to try and build another pc for gaming.  Thats one thing that is really nice about the 360, I could not use my pc that I had when the 360 was released to play the new games that are out.  That pc would be struggling to cope with the demands of games out now, yet the 360 is still going strong and the games are looking better and better.  So I can't wait for the Xbox 1 after seeing some of the early videos.

hehe I kind of had the opposite reaction when I went back to PC gaming over the last 2 years....I think for the most part console games look like ass and perform like ass (there are exceptions of course) and they control like ass.  Just all around assy experience :) but they do have some cool people playing them and have some good exclusives so I need both my PC and a next gen (or 2).

Yea guess I could have worded that differently.  I think between a pc and xbox the pc always looks better in its version of a game.  For example I have Skyrim on both systems.  The game looks great on the xbox but amazing on the PC.  Now the only problem is when a lot of stuff starts happening, spells, dragons flying around, and your out in the wooded area it can start to bog the system down.   Thats more of what I was meaning, I felt sometimes like I was tweaking settings more as new games came out to get better performance than I was just playing and enjoying the game.

Like I said the 360 was released in 2005, you would be hard pressed to take a pc built in 2005 and have it play a current game at near maxed settings.

Out of curiosity I just looked up some specs from around 2005.  Nvidia had their 7xxx line out with the 7950 being the top dog.  Intel was still running the single core Pentium 4's with some of them having the initial attempt at HT technology.  DDR 2 memory was still the norm.

I'm hoping after the holiday season to build a new pc.  With a couple of PC only titles that I have been waiting for, Arma 3 and X3, its gonna be time to upgrade.

Not to hijack the thread but, yes X3:R looks freaking awesome.  I have played each version since X2.  I like building a mega corp empire then set out to destroy some harmless race of alien.  I am really looking forward to the new station mechanics and getting to walk around them and the ship.

I'm currently playing the Arma 3 beta right now and man is it great.  Love being able to swap out optics while on a mission.  That game makes my pc shutter in horror when I click the icon on the desk.  I had to dial so many settings back to get it to play smooth.
