Another Reintroduction

Hi all, making a reintroduction... glad to see the changes that came through in my inbox a few weeks ago. Hopefully can reconnect with members or make new friends.

Bio - 41, married with 2 boys 6 and 4, software development professional by day and hobbyist game developer by night (I have one pending release, and at my current velocity I will be coding for the man for the foreseeable future and don't expect to retire or change careers, that ship has sailed). My hobby has taken up most of my free time but now with the completion of my first release I have to catch up on my very, very large backlog. I'm a native NYer but for the past 8 years have lived near Durham, NC.

PS3 and PS4 - Codemunkee - I'm a Plus member, was very much into DCUO but haven't played in a long time. Dabbled in Warframe and had exactly 1 game of Blacklight. Have debated getting Destiny but seeing all the complaints about repetition and grinding have kept me away.

Xbox 360 - Teknophyl - I've got lots of games, but you'll catch me playing Rocksmith 2014 a lot.

I have a few PC games too, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 are what I piddle with from time to time. I seldom PC game since I sit in front of one up to 16 hours a day.

When I do play, its generally EST for a little bit during the weekdays, more on weekend nights.

Thanks for reading, nice to meet you all, for the first or second time.

Hah it sure was. I remember the time difference kept us from playing anything meaningful. I'm guessing you're still on the Emerald Isle?

Its a retro top down shooter for mobile devices (WP8, iOS) called Meteor Raid. I developed it over a few months with Unity 3D.

I started to get into game dev really heavily (I have a few projects still in development) for a few months, but I am about to start a new job that requires a whole new set of tech training and I haven't been able to devote a lot of time to them these days. The game dev work I did is in line with the programming languages I use day-to-day so this was really easy for me to work with, but now my brain can't handle working on that along with new tech AND trying to keep my family life in balance.

Besides, buying assets when you arent artistic can jack up the cost of development and my game was ad-supported. I didnt want to spend a lot of money on anything until I had a solid artistic contact to work with. I started getting to the point where my projects were way beyond the prototype stage and I needed real art, shaders, scenes - and I just didn't have the bandwidth to keep all that going.

Mobile game discovery is brutal. Marketing is its own full time job. Then you have to overcome jackasses who either copy your game or work with firms who specifically rate down your game and rate up their own. It will never be a money maker, but even a couple hundred bucks a month helps.

If I get canned, I would apply for a business loan and see if I could do it for a year, because why not? But now isn't the time... the takeaway from all this is to tell my kids to do it while they're young and don't have all the responsibilities!
