The Hunger Games.

Anyone interested in this movie?  Yeah, I know, total tween movie but I'm actually hearing a lot of praise from it because they hired folks who can actually act and stay true to the book (which I've only read bits and parts of).

I'm mostly excited to see if they'll really show kids killing kids and stuff and the outcry of parents going WTF?  Ah.

My wife is a fan of the novels and so she's excited for the movie.  I'll probably either see it with her, or if she goes with a group of friends, wait until it comes to dvd/bluray.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm looking forward to it. Only from what I've seen from the trailers, though, and a little from what a friend has told me of the overall story. I dig those future dysopia type of stories in any medium.

The first book should make a great movie, and all the reviews so far indicate that it's the opposite of Twilight - which is good. The other two books will need to be seriously revamped for the screen play, the third one especially was terrible.

I may go see it this weekend, and I only go to a couple movies a year...

I only recently heard about Hunger Games but now it seems like everybody at my office is interested in it. I will check it out.

I enjoyed the books, and the movie was good. I liked the last book, but I wished it was much longer. I felt like they skipped too much, so I hope the movie has more to it.

I saw the movie a couple days ago and damn, DAMN!  It's far better than I expected it to be and I really did expect it to be good.  The deaths in the movie weren't all too gruesome, interesting, rather, and a couple were just plain awwwww....with one in particular that seriously had me so close to tears!  >.<!  I really do want to watch it again just because it pulls at my heart strings.

I saw this last night (never read the books).  Didn't really care for it.  Thought it seemed like an after school special version of Surviving the Game with Ice-T lol  They had a great foundation to explore how people how people would react to this unique situation but they really didn't.  Everybody just kind of went along and played the game all kind of ho-hum.  They also didn't do a very good job of justifying how it became acceptable to kill 23 kids every year for entertainment.  Lenny Kravitz is a bad actor also lol

However; my wife enjoyed it and she has read the books.

Its not for entertainment, its punishment against the Districts for rebelling against the Capital 74 years ago. The people are forced to accept it as entertainment, or else they suffer. No one in the Districts actually enjoys it, but if they don't do exactly what the Capital says, the punishments are very harsh. I thought it was funny the Peacekeepers looked like Spaceballs.

It's the capital people that take issue with accepting this as entertainment.   I find it hard to believe that an entire society would find it enteraining to watch children kill each other.  Maybe if it was based on some extremist religous belief it would be more acceptable or believable for me (kind of a sacraficing virgins thing).

That's the funny thing, in the books, the Capital people loved it. The anti-District propaganda they've been fed made them look forward to the Games. Cinna was the only person mentioned in the Capital to want it to end.

Saw it last night and it was a pretty good movie. And I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned before, but this is pretty much a rip-off of a Japanese movie named "Battle Royale".  A Japanese novel to movie.

If you thought Hunger Games was tweeny, you need to check out Battle Royale.  Imagine Battle Royal as the Quentin Tarantino or Alex Rodriguez version of Hunger Games.

Do you know what they call The Hunger Games in France? "Battle Royale with cheese".

Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies. I never read the book, but I heard it was great.

Just got back from the theaters.  Decent movie.  I had a couple problems with some of the storytelling (I didn't read the book(s)).  Other than that, worthy of my $10.

The entire thing was predictable and kinda dull. They only introduce you to 3 of the 24 tributes, so when half of em die in the first 5 minutes who cares? They go on and on about how district 1 is well trained so you know one of them is going to be the 2nd to last person alive, and after Peter says he loves the main chick you just know he's going to try and sacrifice himself for her. And when they get that Catness chick stuck in the tree, they shoot 2 arrows at her then decide to sleep. Nobody thought to move around the damn tree? But it had a sappy ending and in some high school english class way it portrays something or other. I'm just glad I didn't pay to watch it.

I read the books and saw the movie twice now ... Not bad over all and something I think if done right the whole series would be good in movie format, but they should have just made all three at the same time and released a new movie every 8 to 9 months and made loads of money ...

Rented from redbox.  Read all three books (yes, hard to believe, I can read sentences and stuff)

This was one of my big beefs.  The story involved huge morality issues like the concept/purpose of the games themselves, that they are entertainment for some, or that districts raise “career” kids specifically to kill other kids in the games.  And there’s the likely shock and terror experienced by a kid who is forced to kill another human being, or how people under extreme duress find incredible ways to stay alive, the whole price of survival thing.  These issues really weren’t addressed, superficially at best.  This story begged to have meaning, or at least a little bit of intellectual purpose.  It had none.  I found that disappointing.  (which surprises me:  I usually watch movies to see stuff go booooooom)(or boobies).

Otherwise I’d say the movie was ok.  It stayed pretty true to the book.  It’s a decent story with (mostly) good acting.  Worth a rent

PS:  Woody Harrelson was a boring drunk.

Agree...this should have been filmed with more of a Lord of the Flies type thought process.  Really get gritty with it, and I would have loved it.  As is, was decent but shallow.

I felt he played the role of Haymitch perfectly, he wasn't supposed to he a rambunctious drunk, he was supposed to be sarcastic and tired of the Capital's shit. That's my opinion, though.

This has been sitting in front of the TV for a week now and haven't put it in the player...I guess my enthusiasm could be higher. Maybe this weekend...

I can't help shake the feeling that this is just recycled story from earlier writers...

Probably not fair to pick on Woody, but I was disappointed with Haymitch.  He definitely should not have been a rambunctious drunk.  But he should have been an angry, mean spirited alcoholic, so much so that Katniss wonders if he could ever be sober enuf to help her in the arena, or if he would even care what happened to her in the arena.  The dude has serious demons.  I didn’t get much of that vibe from the movie.

I also found Haymitch to be one of the best pieces of symbolism offered in the first two books.  He won the games.  In return the Capitol set him up as they perceived him to be, rich and famous, a hero.  Instead he was a miserable f’d up SOB who had to be blotto passed out drunk to sleep, never slept at night, and always slept with a knife.  He was an example of disparity between how the Capitol perceived the games and what the games really meant for most of the districts and its contestants.  Again, I didn’t get that from the movie.

I guess I’d say that overall the movie was less dark and edgy than the books.  Haymitch’s character may have been toned down accordingly.  Dunno.  Hopefully they set him free in the next one.

Points taken. I agree completely. I dont think the movie suffered much from the book; all in all, I consider it a successful transition to film.

Never read the books and after seeing the preview was not interested in tjhe movei at all. But after watching it when the wife picked it up I must admit I was impressed. A lot better then expected. I think it suffered as a movie as not enough time to develope the whole story but I think they did well with the time they had. kudos
