Gears 2?

So I recently purchased an Xbox and I saw that Gears of War 3 was in sale for $25 bucks. I have played the first Gears game but I never played the second. Would you say that I need to play 2 before I start 3? I guess what I'm asking is the story an important part of the game? I have played the first game but I don't particularly remember anything special about the story.

I loved the trilogy so I could not imagine skipping one of them. I would play the second one before starting the third. You can probably find a recap of 1 to catch you back up on the story. Not to mention you can probably find 2 for $5, cheap entertainment. :-D

If I remember correctly, Gears 3 does a recap of the events that transpired during 1 and 2 at the beginning of the game... it also very lightly touches on some of the events that happened in the novels so I recommend reading the novels. You can play Gears 3 campaign as a stand alone and you will probably have a good time with it but to truly enjoy the franchise, I recommend playing through Gears 1 and 2, then reading the Gears of War novel, "Coalition's End," and finishing it off with Gears 3. You can read some of the other Gears novels as well as the comic books but they simply enhance the main story whereas there are more events in Coalition's End that will help you appreciate Gears 3 all the more.

I managed to pick up all three games this past weekend. A friend and I started gears 2 co op last night and have been really enjoying it. I'll probably start gears one solo sometime this week as I could really use a refresher on the story.  Does the multiplayer for 3 have any spoilers for the story? I would like to give it a try and figure it's most likely more active than gears 2.

The Gears 3 MP does not contain any spoilers as it is either Horde, Beast Mode (where you play as Locust fighting humans), or competitive MP modes such as Team Deathmatch, Execution, etc. Although it may not contain spoilers, it may contain people that talk about the games and may spoil it for you. Also, I highly recommend playing MP with a group of friends as it can be a frustrating experience if you play by yourself.

Gears 3 does have a story recap that'll play if you idle at the main screen long enough, there's also a menu option someplace there to fire it up.

I think you probably should play the 2nd one before th 3rd one story wise.  There is a new enemy type in 3 that you will get introduced to in 2 but not directly fight until 3.  There are also 3 books that bridge the story between 2 and 3 if you really want to dig deep into the story.

Pretty much Gears 1 just introduces you to the Locust enemy but not their modivation for the attack which is answered in 3.  It  introduced you to the characters, the environment, weapons.  Really it's just the setup game for the rest of the two games.

Gears 3 Horde/Beast will spoil some of the enemies you're going to face in 3 that you don't really know about.  The VS multiplayer doesn't spoil anything, it just will have characters who maybe you don't know who they are.
