Kingdom of Amalur fans

Don't expect a sequel

Quote:
38 Studios was unable to make payroll this week, but is in the process of making the $1.125 million payment that set off the company's crisis earlier this week. WPRI reports that a spokesperson for the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) did confirm that former Red Sox player Curt Schilling's video game company was unable to pay its employees.

A source tells Joystiq that beyond not making payroll, all temps and contractors at 38 Studios were let go this week.

At the same time, Governor Lincoln Chafee's office stated 38 Studios is in the process of making the overdue payment to the state. The head of the RIEDC, Keith Stokes, who approved the $75 million loan to 38 Studios in 2010, resigned late last night.

If 38 Studios does close, Rhode Island taxpayers will have to repay the $75 million bond (plus interest) through 2020, but they'll own the intellectual property of the developer, which would likely be sold at auction.

If the company does make the payment to the state, the next round will be owed in 2013. Of course, there won't be a 38 Studios much longer if it isn't paying employees.

Update: The hand-delivered check for the overdue $1.125 million payment has been returned by the EDC to 38 Studios after the company's chief financial officer said there were insufficient funds to cover it.

For a developer, Curt is a helluva pitcher.

Big up to 38 Studios, why should they be left out of taxpayer bailout money. Its not like they were greedy like MF Global with $1.2 billion gone missing. At least the taxpayers of RI will have something to show for it,they will own the IP's. Think how cool that will be,in 2020 you will be able to say that you own KOA. There may not be a sequel, but imagine how kick-ass the DLC will be in  8 years time.

KOA was just as fun to me as Skyrim.  DLC is goos stuff. I'm about 60 hours in.

Everyone has been laid off both at 38 Games and Big Huge. KOA was a bust selling under 1.5 million units.

That should tell you something right there.

Most games who sell a million have broke even and a sequel is a given. This is fishy given that KOA was already a game, 38 just slapped paint on it and inserted a story for the most part when it acquired BHG raises a LOT of questions from me.

You're telling me Schilling couldn't have cut that cheque for 1.5 million himself ??? Not like he's broke or anything.

News that the game studios have laid off everyone got me thinking: Will production lines stop making the game?  If so, I should probably pick it up (I was initially waiting for a GOTY edition).  The wife gave her CFO approval, so...

To answer that question it's not the dev's choice, it's the publisher's. The publisher, in this case EA can print as much as they want as it's their product, they don't own the IP and they would still have to pay 38 Studios royalites, but they couldn't make a sequel unless they purchase the IP.

Well, I don't see them making a GOTY edition, which I was holding out for.

EA might keep making copies, as I believe its still selling, so I might hold off.
