GOTY with a twist

So what is your game (or games) of the year.  Here's the twist....the game(s) doesn't have to have come out in 2012.....mabye Pong is your game of the year :)   I'm putting this twist in because I've seen people on Steam (Total Massacre comes to mind instantly) playing older games for TONS of hours (Fallout New Vegas....TM how many hours do you have in that??).  It so I thought you know what I really want to know what you game you enjoyed most this year - even if it didn't come out this year :)  Also it could be a beta, alpah, free to play - whatever.  Let's keep it loose and fun like Biznass's mom.

Here are some that come to mind for me.

DayZ Beta.  I don't think I've played a game as much as I played DayZ.  It's funny because the controls are kind of awkward, the game (Arma 2) is kind of buggy and it's a beta (and alpha), it was constantly changing (some changes I hated) but damn I just loved the hell out of DayZ.

Warhammer 40k - this would fall into the "older" catagorey.  I loved Company of Heroes and this is more of the same (or similar) in the Warhammer universe and I just love it.  So many factions to play as in an RTS and I love the RTS style of the Relic games.

X-Terran Conflict / X-Albion Prelude - this is a new "type" of game for me (space discovery / RPG / dynasty building).  I cannot wait for X-Rebirth because being lost is in the X universe is just so damn enjoyable.

Team Fortress 2 - been playing for a couple of years and see no reason to stop - still one of the most fun shooters to drop in and lose a couple of hours to - even if you aren't running with chums - it's just a nearly perfect FPS for me.

FTL - Probably my favorite game that came out in 2012.  I have installed on my Mac and PC because you never know when you might want to throw down and play a game.  If it was just a little less random it would be perfect (some of the randomness is a little TOO harsh) but it is still a blast and I love the game.

Honorable Mentions: Mechwarrior Online, Hawken, Plague Inc (iOS), Chivalry

So where did you spend your most enjoyable gaming hours this year?

LOL. I play a lot of older games because I mod them. I modded Max Payne, fallout new Vegas (about 120 hrs), Skyrim (about 160 hrs), and Mass Effect (about 700 hrs).  come to think about it, almost every game I play I mod it. Out of all the games I have played this year( far to many to list :)), I would have to say that the Mass effect trilogy is my games of the year! Mass Effect is the one game I just keep going back too. I think I'm going to start playing it again really soon.

nice I really have to give that series another try.  I tried ME 1  and didn't really like it.  I watched my son play parts of ME2 but never got around to trying it and haven't tried ME3 yet.

Yeah, I think you should give it another try. Mass Effect 2 was a more streamed line version of Mass Effect 1 but I found more enjoyable. Mass Effect 3 add mechanics from Mass Effect 1 and 2 to make a more rounded product.

yeah 3 is really the one I want to play the most and I think before I play 3 I want to play 2.  I had a really horrible experience with 1 so I can't see myself trying 1 again.  I played it on the 360 and honestly the only thing I remember was horrible screen tearing and fucking elevators lol

Based on sheer amount of gameplay from last year... I belive my GOTY has to go to Dungeon Defenders.

Logged 60+ hours on steam... and that doesn't take into account to 100+ hoursmy buddy Monty and I logged on the ps3 playing it. The mix of action RPG and tower defense was like crack to us.

Well... come to think of it, I probably logged way more hours into SWTOR... meh I still give the total gameplay title to Dungeon Defenders.

Dark Souls was strong, as was Torchlight 2, and Diablo 3. To The Moon was a very memerable game from the Indie scene. Anyone looking for a quick and memerable story would do well to check that one out. Mark of the Ninja is one of the most fun stealth games I have ever played, and if anyone ever gets the chance to do so, I recomend taking a look at it. Terraria rounds off the list of some of my most memerable games from last year

Looking back over the year, I spent way more time accumulating games than sitting down and actualy playing them! I'm currently attempting to refrain from buying anything new for as long as possible (I've said no games for the year... but I doubt I will live up to that), and am going to make an effort to hit up some games in my Backlog, that are purchased and not yet played (Dishonored and the Darksiders games are notable, along with the Witcher and Witcher 2, Saints Row the 3rd, Fallout: New Vegas, and many others).

Should make one of these for the 2old2playstation group!

My PC GOTY was a throw back to the 16-bit days. The Shining Force Series. I picked these up w/ a Steam sale.

Also have to put Skyrim in as Runner up.

Wow started this post and realized that I have played a ton of great games this year.   Here goes my list in no particular order.

FTL - Oregon trail in space was a concept I never thought I would like but this game grabbed a hold of me big time.  Played it at home, at work, in the john, fooling around with the wife (Joke) TMI of course but what I'm trying to say is this game kicked ass.

Xcom Enemy Unknown - Another game with brutal difficulty that brought back one of my favorite series from the good old days.

Mark of the Ninja - I love stealth game's and growing up in the 80's I loved the shit out of ninja's too so this game really hit the spot.

Dishonored - Like I said I love stealth and this game reminds me a lot of the Thief series.  My favorite thing about it was that the developers didn't mess around trying to add some stupid tacked on multiplayer to it sacrificing the quality of the single player.  I'm glad this one sold well enough to greenlight a sequel.

Two titles that didn't come out in 2012 but were the first games I fired up once I built my pc were The Witcher 1 and 2.   I cannot recommend these games enough to anyone who is a fan of mature themed rpg's.   Geralt of Rivia is by far one of the best fantasy heroes created in many years.  Slayer of monsters, lover of women basically a high fantasy Shaft without the fro.  If you haven't played them get with the program because they are both cheap and excellent.  .

Hawken - It's like MW mixed with CoD.  Easy to pick up and play but deep when it comes to the use of team work and tricking out your mech.  Best part it's free to play.

Morroblivion - Basically it's Elder Scrolls Morrowwind ported over to the Oblivion engine.  Thank the gaming gods for those folks out there with no life that would take the time to do this because Morrowwind is excellent but has not aged well at all.  This allows me to play through it again without the headache of looking at it's ugly engine and terrible old school mechanics. The same modding group is now porting it over to the Skyrim engine which to me is overkill but hey why not?  Like Assassin stated Mods really extend the life of games.  The biggest benefit to me is that modders can sometimes fix buggy or irritating issues that the devs no longer support.  Unofficial Skyrim patch FTW.

If I had to pick one for GOTY....

Far Cry 3 - I can't describe how good this game actually is.  The randomness of the encounters between the player, the environment, wildlife and enemies make it one of the most addictive sandbox games I've ever played.   See a snake in the grass next to a enemy?  Throw a rock there and lure him over to watch it strike and kill him no bullets needed.  Want to shoot a shark with a rocket launcher?  You can do that.  Jump off a hang glider in flight to drop down and stab two unaware enemies on the ground?  You can do that too.  Add enemies and villains you love to hate made this game stand out among all the other COD/BF wannabe's out there.  Plus this game on pc looks amazing with DX11 features cranked up.

Skywin might be done faster now that they have actually released the Dragonborn DLC.
