DUST 514 Will be F2P

Yep Free 2 Play and free to download.  This is the game that some how ties in to the MMO Eve Online world - where you are the fighting on the battles in that game.

I've been playing Blacklight Retribution on the PC (F2P FPS) it is pretty damn solid.  I think we are going to see more and more of these F2P models on the console (already seeing DCUO and Killzone 3 now with F2P offerings).

Personally I love the F2P model.  I've been playing Team Fortress 2 on the PC a lot lately so I overpaid for a lame hat lol just because a) I wanted to be able to traded items with people (so you have to buy something to become a premium member) but also b) I felt they deserved some of my money because the game is so good and I've been having such a good time with it.

Same thing with Tribes Ascend on the PC.  Another amazing F2P game that deserves my money.

I guess companies just have to walk that line of Free To Play and Pay To Win.  I would say TF2 does it the best so far.

I might give it a try now. I thought it was a little interesting when I first heard about it.

F2P is a easy concept to grasp but a tricky endenvor to execute successfuly.

Y'all might want to read up on EVE Online though !

It is amazing how much companies can make on micro-transactions.  The only thing is they have to keep pushing new items otherwise it won't work.  I didn't know KZ3 went F2P, guess what I will be downloading tonight...

Only two MMO's make money WoW and Lineage, that's it.

At best you break even at which point you should seriously consider your product and the point.

AION, Dark Age of Camelot, EQ, EQ2...

Shot Online  is one that I've been playing since it started is it's not exclusively Pay2Play, but rather F2P and Premium Membership... This game has been going strong since 2003. It's not a "HUGE" player base, but 2 million world wide is nothing to balk at, and most of the reason they stay online is paid memberships.

Eve Online has been making good money, elsewise they wouldn't be where they are today and the upcoming DUST game should prove to be an interesting bridge...

Everquest and Everquest 2 have both had successful Pay to Play platforms... EQ2 adopted Free to Play to bring in more users... and Many other MMO developers have adopted the Free to Play platform, setting up specific realms/servers to increase usership, interest and potential gateways to paid users.

AION is going F2P with Version 3.0 coming this year...

Nothing wrong with that if you ask me.  There are plenty of MMO's that make money, elsewise they would simply close up shop (and there have been plenty that have done this over the years), Most aren't around to just collect dust.

I will say though, if your idea of making money a $billion+ revenue, then yea... everything else sucks.

Actually, DCUO is making money which is why they are going update crazy lately.  They have the money to afford the developer power to maintain the game now.  Before going F2P I was worried.  But after they went witht he F2P model the game has grown quite abit.  The last three updates have shown they actually are listening to the players.

A new DLC is coming very soon that will include earth powers and the start of the Super Woman raids.

I think the only problem with the way they have been progessing DCUO is from a new player's perspective it can be very overwhelming now - lots of stuff to do.  With everything that you could do n a day ther eis no way to get it all done.  But that is a good thing I believe.  It means you can do different things each time you login.

Hell I talked about this game months ago, the bloody beta test fro PS3 players should be coming soon??

Don't know if my older posts about the game factions, armored suits, wepons and gear are still around or not?? But basically you can modify your powered assault armor, there are hard points of various numbers depending upon which type of armor your wearing such as Heavy Assault, Recon, etc; so you can mount wepons and other types of gear and mods onto your armor, same applies to vehicles; and of course with microtransactions you can purchase better stuff.

Now the game will interact with players playing Eve Online on their PC's, so basically anyone that is playing Dust 514 is being dispatched to a planet below by those players, so you can call for reinforcements, and equipment drops from those Captains of their Battleships in orbit.

I said this earlier, if executed right, this could bring something new to the FPS genre, and if they can have bigger battle then what MAG could offer player wise, this might be on eto keep your eyes on!!!

Plus the fact I love to hear Spot and guys like Toast and Pepsi jaw jacking other players the entire time, talk about a F@#$ing riot!!! (LOL)

I'm with you Garfy, I mentioned this months ago as well.

The interaction (in real time) with EVE Online players is what interests me the most.  Being able to call your PC buddy and ask for an orbital beam strike on "that" target and then watch it happen seconds later will be very rewarding.

And its free to play, so there's no reason NOT to try it out.
