Vid game recording tech challenged questions...

Saw this and it looks like what I want, but I have a few questions if anyone's knowledgable in this area.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005P5UMVM/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=11498083644&hvpos=1t2&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1668801598746677917&hvpone=199.00&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_3l3qh92yd8_b

This WILL record directly to my PC from the x-box ( I think I get that).

It would probably also record Net flix to my PC ( I don't know why I'd want to do that but...)

But this isn't capable of recording PC gameplay to PC is it? Like, I dunno, Minecraft perhaps?

My main use would most likely be Forza, but I could see other things perhaps down the  road...

But theoretically anything that can pass through the cords into the box, and out through the USB would be recorded, no? Possible formats might be a problem, I dunno. Would it work from a DVD player out through component cables and into the PC if I had personal video on disc and I wanted to reproduce for my work at home business contacts on the DVD burner?

There's probably questions I don't even know enough about to ask at this point.

But at $199.00 ish (free shipping) this does look attractive...

For PC to PC, you could use FRAPS, which does a good job of recording gameplay on your PC..

That's where I saw the product and what generated all the questions as the reviews as useful as a wet paper bag...

As for the FRAPS, that's a go as the cost is low and it would work fine on the PC itself. Thanks Hat!

Q\ Can you play in HD 1080i while recording .

I know this seems like a stupid question but there are a lot of so called HD recording equipment out there that wont work if you play in 1080i, you have to link your XBOX with the component cables which is a complete wast of time and money .

I thought about doing this too but didn't want to sacrifice my 1080i set up for the sake of recording gameplay.  I would have had to ditch using the HDMI cable and go back to component cables.  Screw that.  I haven't found anything that would allow me to keep my gameplay video quality while recording gameplay to my PC.

Honestly I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i. Whether you use hdmi or component, component supports 720p and 1080i. And yes you can play and record at the same time. When you have the pvr hooked up via component you have the have the unit powered up, whether your pc is on or not to use as a pass thru.

Jesus man you must be blind 720p - 1080i  is a massive leap and component cables is as bad as a scart lead , a lot less quality than 720p . I used to record my xbox gaming but gave up due to quality of game play plus whether its 720p or 1080i its the soft ware package that up-scales the quality and your left with not 2nd rate graphics but 3rd rate if your lucky . Think twice before you shell out good bucks for some thing that puts you behind by a least 2 years in game play graphics !!!!!!!!!!!!

It's still playing with component cables and loosing HD not worth the bother until they make a comparable unit that enables you to play and record in HD . The advertising is so miss leading , they should have that lack of play in HD and having to use component cables in the spec run down not buried in the installation manual !!

I play at 720 anyway. This is NOT an issue for me. If you can't stand to look at it when I post it up later, it is an issue for YOU.

I just want to mess with video stuff from Forza without having to deal with their stupid website/process...

I'm misunderstood yet again, I don't have an issue with quality of any kind, just letting you guys know what I have learnt having used a few different types of capture cards .

I for one wont play in any thing less than 1080i because I really enjoy the graphic content in game and have an issue with hard ware producers who don't tell it like it is.

my 2 cents is that I prefer ripping and posting to youtube in 720 as its a more widely accepted format for phones. I never have liked the 1080 look on their site

Well there is a huge difference in connections and quality for xbox. Composite is the red, yellow, white and offers up to 480p, then composite which is red, green, blue, white, red which supports up to 1080i, I believe. Then there is the hdmi connection which carries both audio and video in one cable and can support up to 1080p which the xbox can do.

The difference in my opinion from composite to component is huge and not so much from component to hdmi. I may be blind but that is easy to see.

The Pvr doesn't have software to enhance the picture, it's just a recorder. It captures the input that passes thru it, plenty good quality for youtube etc.Passes the signal thru to the tv/monitor of choice just as if you had it hooked up to the tv via component directly.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the soft ware not the hard ware , 9 times out of 10 it's Arksoft using showbiz 5 . The soft ware enhances the final video I never said it was the hard ware IM JUST TRYING TO BLOODY HELP !!!!

Try this put your lap top or pc next to your TV or monitor then use your capture equipment and compare the two ....Your playing in 480p and reproducing in 720p .

Yes the hard ware unit only copies medium its the soft ware that gives you the finished product so getting back to what I tried to point out in my original post your buying some thing that reduces your gaming experience !!!!!!!

I found that the difference between the two was huge.  I was playing Halo 3 and other FPS when I made the switch (I had just gotten a 50 inch TV) and I could see enemies much clearer and from much farther away.  It allowed me to engage from greater distances and enjoy the eye candy.  I then upgraded my xbox when it shit the bed and got one that had the HDMI output.  Wow! I was floored at the clarity.  This is why I refused to use the system I got as a gift from my wife.  She got me this thing:  Roxio Game Capture

I looked into this system by Black Magic but it uses USB 3.0, which I do not have on my PC.

Xbox units normally just come with composite cable. Yes if you want hi def you have to purchase a component cable for the xbox or an hdmi cable.

The black magic intensity pro (installs in a pci slot in your desktop) allows for HDMI and 1080i recording. But is also requires a large array of hard drives to capture HD content with the 360, but not ps3 as it sends DRM info through the HDMI cable and all you get is a black screen. If you want to capture any gameplay, using component cables and playing in 720p is something you will just have to sacrafice. Trust me been doing it for 3 years. If I am capturing I use component and when I am not I switch to HDMI. With all the copyright legislation going on we will be lucky to be able to use captured devices through HDMI cables with the next gen Xbox. I see them doing as Sony does now and blocking the capture of HD content by sending the DRM info through the cable.
