Toyota FT86 convertible and it is a 2+2

Not everyones cup of tea but this is what I have been waiting for

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUNvXVsoxHI

Ok - its not RWD and it probably needs another 60 horses to make it more interesting, but as a family guy needing to move from my MR2 at some point (I love it to bits, perhaps if I hide it in the garage the wife wont notice) - hell yes!

Now damn well make it!

Looks great IMO. Better than the coupe.

If you lived in the UK, especially this year, you'd be keen to make the most of every sliver of sunlight. convertibles sell here even with the amount of interesting weather we get. I'm definitely in that crowd.

Maybe its fond memories of being 8 years old being driven around by my much loved gran in her 1971 blubell blue mgb. Bless her.

As for RWD - fwd is just predominant in Europe, and I've always preferred the feeling of being pushed than pulled. However this yota would tick enough other boxes.

personal preference - that's all.

In game I can't drive fwd for crap. I just can't seem to get the technique.

It looks great but not sure where you got the "not RWD."

The FRS/BRZ/FT-86 platform is a 200hp RWD format unless that is not the case in Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_86

Subaru is supposed to be coming out with an STI version of their BRZ which is what I was hoping for which is why I purchased an "in between" car until year 2 or 3 of the FRS/BRZ/FT-86 so they can work out some bugs and develop some spankier versions.

Cheers!

Holy crap batman, your right.

I was convinced it was FWD. Read an article prerelease that said so, and just assumed. Obviously it was speculative and since I had no interest in the coupe itself, it was only when this came up did it pull the right strings.

That just added the cherry :)

Its a great little car if you are looking for a plain jane RWD 2 + sort of 2 (must be no taller than 5', 100lbs, supermodel body type)

The Subaru BRZ Sport Tech Package is the clear choice if you live in a colder climate as you get heated seats and HID Headlights for a bit more coin over the 25K base price.  Subaru  sets up the suspension a bit different than Toyota does and the very first thing to do is get rid of the Prius tires that are on the car.  Put a decent summer performance tire on the car and you have a fun little car that you can still light up the ass end in from time to time.

The biggest complaints about the coupe to date have been the the engine is a little anemic at 200hp, the tires, then the dated looking interior.  I would imagine we'll see some little improvements here and there from both manufacturers as they put "their" stamp on each version to differentiate them more.

I'm hoping Subaru does produce the STI Concept they showed at the Detroit Auto Show this year as it has the extra 50 ponies that everyone has been looking for as well as some nice styling cues like a carbon roof, LED running lights and side markers, bit of body kit, etc. (except for the stupid wing).  Granted a production model might not be exactly as pictured but if its close, its a winner in my books.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

If Toyota opts to go the other way and produce a drop top, I think that too will be a huge home run for them and would be a good direction for each manufacturer.

Cheers!

Subaru coupe is by far my favourite, in that form. The wing is repulsive. Totally kills the lines.

as you say, I think if yota can truly deliver a 2+2 rag top, with a small boot, they will have a sufficient selling point to shift enough to make it worth while, compared to the driver focused scoob.

As for the rear seats - my kids are 1 and 4. They'll remain small enough for long enough that it won't be an issue.

The power is a bit of an issue. Considering what both companies have in their back catalogue (technology and engines), you'd think they could easily offer higher output variants.

Everything I have read has pointed to the low hp numbers being a  factor of bringing the car in just under 25k. Part of that was Subaru as its their boxer engine.  They don't want a super high hp car encroaching on the Imprezza WRX and STI lines.

Toyota doesn't really have anything in the stable at all for sports machines so doing this with Subaru made sense.  There are already a slew of aftermarket companies doing go fast parts for the platform and again that is a smart move for both Subaru and Toyota (Scion).  Get the buyer into the base platform and then let them customize as they see fit.

Looks like huge fun.

Sumo power have a development car.  Talking about turbo kits and superchargers.

Now I bet that we are talking 260 plus with a conservative upgrade.

That would give him the torque he wants.
