True.  The bad thing for me now is waiting till Friday to actually use them. crying  I need to build my rig first.cool

That said, first impression is that the pedals are heavier than I thought they would be especially with the inversion kit and the wheel is very comfortable.

Looks like I may have a defective wheel right from the start.angry

Plugged everything in, powered on my wheel.  It spun to the right fully, spun to the left full and then just stopped.  LED showing 888.  Wont connect to xbox, tried several times with same results. Based on research, it sounds like its defective.  Sent Fanatec an email.  we will see what happends.  Not impressed so far

Try putting it in pc mode through your computer . My wheel has firmware757 and when my wheel powers up I see 888 on the display. Did you sync it with your Xbox the same way you would with controlller.

Definitely want to verify this. And don't worry about not being fast (if you've never used a wheel before you better be prepared for a steep learning curve and likely frustration) the immersion factor outweighs any percieved or real losses in overall pace until you get back up to speed. Don't be a quitter...like Church (still not forgetting :))

The problem is I'm not able to even sync it to the xbox.  all the buttons dont work and the wheel is still turned full left.  Not able to move the wheel whith significant force just to have the wheel go right back to hard left, Additionally, after trying a few times, the case in the right front was getting rather warm.  After sending Fanatec an email with a video showing the issues, they have indicated they are shipping a replacment wheel out today with instructions on returning this one.  I would expect it early next week.

Based on what I have read online, its the optic sensor in the wheel that is the cause for the defect.  Im happy they are sending a new wheel instead of the part like they have for some of the other folks (older wheels, location etc)

@Gunny - the inversion come in a kit that you have to do your self but its really straight forward in doing it so no problem.

@Ink - I have heard about that for some but mine is truely stuck and is a paper weight

@ Parcells - Im running a madcatz wheel now however I would still expect a steep learning curve moving over to the csr.  Will be interesting thats for sure.  As for quiting, too much money inveted to quit now.

@steviegers = Good to know that as long as I can connect up tot he xbox I could still see the 8.8.8. when the new wheel arrives

Thanks for the info everyone.

That's good that they are sending a new wheel. I only started seeing 888 after the last firmware update 756 I think for csr u may not have the latest firmware on your new wheel. I would recommend that you put the lateast firmware on it before you start seriously using it I really struggled when I updated it was like starting again.

A50 does not work for me through my csr elite. The Tritton Warheads do because there completely wireless. With the A50 the game sound works fine the online chat does not due to the wire that is needed from the csr elite to the headset for online chatting.

Grim,

I made the switch a little over a month ago from the MS Wheel.  The first time I went Autocrossing with the Fanatec wheel I had a hard time getting the car to steer.  It just didn't seem to turn as sharply as the old wheel.  It was rather puzzling since I at the time was racing against my own ghost in the same car.  The only difference was the MS Wheel vs. the Fanatec.

Then it occured to me that radius of the Elite wheel is larger then the MS Wheel.  As such I would need to turn the Fanatec wheel a smidge further than I would the MS Wheel to achieve the same amount of steering angle.  My muscle memory was based on the MS Wheel which is why the car didn't seem to turn as much with the Fanatec.   After going into the advanced controller settings and dropping the, IIRC, Steering Axis Deadzone Outside setting the wheel was much more comfortable.

If the MadCatz's radius is also smaller than the Fanatec you may notice the same thing.  If I was half the age I am now I probably wouldn't have realized the radius difference and just adapted to it, but I'm old and adjusting the settings is much easier.  I'd still suggest running a few laps fist to get a feel for the wheel before making adjustments.

Congrats on the new wheel!

The MC wheel is indeed further and it only rotates 400 deg (200 each direction) so having a full 900 degreen turning is going to take some time.  Ive read some turn it down to 540 or even 630 but I will see what happens when the new wheel gets here. I had hoped to run some serious practice on it tomorrow and Saturday in time for the events but that will have to wait.  Thanks for the tips.  If you think of any others, let me know.

Thanks

Once you have everything working, adjust your clutch outside deadzone down.  If using the foot pedal for clutch, and using the gear shift, this makes the clutch action quicker.  If you're using the paddle shifter with ACL enabled, it doesn't matter smiley

I have my wheel set to 300 degrees of rotation. I will try the outside cluch deadzone adjustment. I want to use the clutch with shifter but people with controllers seem to have a quicker shift response time than those that use a actual clutch pedal and shifter . Thats part of the reason Fanatec added ACL to the csr and csr elite wheels.

Agreed smiley - this same type of discussion occurs in real life auto forums.  Manual transmission is more fun from a driving experience/immersion perspective but the modern direct dual clutch transmissions will always change gears faster than a human can.

Have to agree guys. I always use the cluch and shifter but I would prob be faster using the paddles or ACL. Was racing in the seat cup cars with a few of the guys and I was going way in to the red and was slower at changing gears than the pad user following me. I just don't want to use the paddles after getting the th8rs :)

Yea I just love using the clutch and shifter even if I blow shifts, hit the wrong gear and am slower going thru the gears, the immersion is sooooo much better!

So the replacement wheel arrived Tuesday.  Even though the first wheel had issues, I was able to get it to boot-up a few times (although it failed most of the time) and was able to get some runs in the rig over the weekend.

As others have stated, its a work in progress. I did update the firmware to 756 and I love the acl feature.

  • Accelerator -  I originally had the accelerator inverted along with the clutch and brake pedals however I have reverted the accelerator back to its original position for better feel.
  • Brake Pedal - This is perhaps the best addition for me.  I love the load cell and I'm much more confident in my braking.
  • Wheel - The FF took some time to get used to and the paddle shifters feel solid.  After setting the Sensitivity to off, it seems to be more consistent between cars (thanks to supernovadave for the tip). this setting does make it more sensitive to minor inputs but I think I'll get used to it.
  • Racing rig (GR 3000) - After a number of fine adjustments, the rig is now glued and screwed in place and am really happy with the end product.  It twisted a bit in the process or gluing but was able to adjust as needed.

I guess the proof is in the pudding so to speak, Tuesdays Icon race finished 4th (best finish in that series) and last night in the Escort I finished 1st (0 handicap) and 2nd (5% handicap with a faster time, go figure)  for the best overall night for me since joining the club.  Still need to work on the braking point as I think I caught oldschool of guard on one of the turns but the curve is going up.

The one area I'm have some difficulty with is in the lobbies with some of the new cars fitzy sent me as he runs a much looser car than I do and my throttle control is not there yet.  I'm trying to run with TCS off but still getting out of shape corner off.  Practice will help that.

Overall, well worth the time and energy spent and already seeing progress.

Again, thanks to everyone for the tips and input.

James

Awesome Grim, definately get into the wheel settings and fine tune them.  I tried a bunch that I found online that worked but I sat down one night and started going setting by setting on the wheel and got it refined to my driving style and I must say it feels better.

I have just the regualar CSR pedals but I am really looking at the Elite or Club pedals just for the load cell.

I have to say I have had just two issues with my wheel and Fanatec was great about responding and getting it resolved.  Happy to hear that got you taken care of.

Ok so now I have a new problem.  Now that I have the fanatec wheel, it looks like my turtlebeach x12's are crap with it.  What other options do I have? keep in mind that I need to keep it under $100.00.

Thanks

I swear I've said this till I'm blue in the face. If you want something that works really well with no problems. Go pickup an official xbox wireless headset. It fits nicely underneath my Sennhieiser headphones and is hassless.

Lol - that was his shifter you heard Fitzy. laugh

Seriously though Grim, Brnt's audio has always been crystal clear in any room we've both been in.

So how do you mute the mic if the headphones are over your earpiece?  My dogs bark sometimes and I need to be able to mute my mic from time to time.

Thanks
