Shifting experiment, interesting results.

Because the question how to shift keeps coming up I decided to do a little test.
Five heats of each shifting method. Flat, lift, gated and auto clutch.
Test conditions:
Cars: Stock
Track: Hockenheim 1/4 mile
Launch: Pinging off the rev limiter
Clutch: Flat and lift shifting with button, Gated with the clutch pedal.
6Th. time is the average time for that shifting method.

                  12.253 12.223 12.310 12.183

So it seems that flat shifting is NOT the fastest way, in cars with a normal manual lifting
on the upshift is quickest but in cars with a twin clutch or race sequential transmission
(and possibly a stock auto) the auto clutch is quickest.

Oh!!!! I suspected that dual clutch etc was quicker with manual no clutch but ACL too! Could someone explain precisely what is meant by flat, gated etc etc If this is accurate it actually means I could pick up some serious time with some of my favourite cars

I'd say, and tyhe numbers seem sto lead that way, that rev matching and the torque of the vehicle seem to be a factor. The smaller cars aren't as affected as they don't light up the tires as easy?

I've always said R1's should be run without clutch, they're designed that way, just not sure T10 knew that (or got it right).

Auto clutch means manual without clutch, I only thought of it now that the CSR E wheel has an auto clutch option on the wheel. I don't own one so I can't test that.

Flat shifting means keeping the throttle open on the upshifts.

Lift means lifting the throttle on the upshifts.

Gated is the 6+1 H-gate shifter for the Fanatec wheels.

TCS was off for the tests.

In my opinion I think it just depends on the transmission/clutch being used. The gtr and 458 use an automatic with paddleshift box and the times show the method closest to what it does naturally is fastest. The 22b and civic have similar times between wot shifts and lift shifts The seat should and does have faster wot shifts because it has a sequential gear box. There are a lot of variables that come into play (i.e. amount of time throttle is closed, driver error etc) but in general this comparison hits it on the head.

Not trying to be a dick here, but since this was done with a single driver it isn't really a fair example of how things work.  If someone is faster/slower with their feet/fingers than Zeratul then the data will be skewed based on the skill level.  Like Trackassasin said, there's too many variables (the driver being the biggest one in my opinion).

I'd suggest each driver run their own test to find out what is fastest for them.
