In Response To Jonny: Why The Love For Standoff?

Was it the Warthogs?  It was the warthogs, wasn't it?  To me, Standoff would have been a lot better with no bases, no room to the sides, and no room behind the bases.  In other words, practically the rocks and the middle and the areas off by the invisibility, for me.

it was big enoug for eight (ya, a little crowded) but small enough for 4. i loved Valhalla, but Standoff worked better for four and five man teams. awesome map.

i agree that the area behind the bases was pretty much a waste for anything outside of BTB.

Valhalla is the perfect Big Team map.  It's everything that you love about the playlist, in one map, I feel.

Standoff was the perfect Squad Battle map like Valhalla was for BTB.

It had the interaction with the bases for 'strategy', the laser, rockets, and vehicles.

The areas behind the bases were useless except for BTB and extra spawns. The main area was great.

Standoff was a perfect map. Not to big, not to small and it was simple. 4v4 or 8v8 there was action right from the start. Plus it was the best competitive BTB map.

I loved Standoff.

Mostly is was used for my Hog Wars and Sniper gametypes but I liked KOTH, Flag and Assault there too.

Touché good sir!

It was a culmination of things for me personally.  Initially it wasn't too big and it wasn't too small, and you could play with teams from 4v4 to 8v8 on it.  Competitively, this was my map.  When we had our old team back in the day this was our best map - I think we had a 90% win history on it (from when I collected stats with good ol' Query Spree).  We knew when the weapons would spawn, and when the hogs would respawn after being destroyed.  Control the hogs, control the map.

I loved nading the Hog from your initial spawn out of the door of the base!  Usually, I'd hit the guy in front of me, promptly followed by "Where the eff did that nade come from?".

Secondly, it was home to my best forged map - Map of Fury.  It was quite simple to say the least.  If you've never played it, all I did was put a man cannon on top of each base, and 2 in the center faced each way (later this was revised with 3 cannons on top of the base to incorporate KOTH).  You could quickly get to the other base and back within seconds.  This provided our clan with some of the most hilarious games ever!

I do agree with the space behind each base that was pretty much a waste.  Although it was kind of fun flying a banshee behind the cliffside and the popping up and killing some people!

This was one of my favorites!  Wish we had a Reach equivalent!

I think that the best Halo maps have good strategies for obtaining map control, and good strategies for breaking it.  Standoff had this.  So did The Pit.  I still think Valhalla was better for BTB (Valhalla is the #1 BTB map of all time IMO) but Standoff was a good 4v4 map if you liked vehicles.

Hogs, and CTF. Just an overall great map. Like Jonny, I lovd throwing nades cross map at the other team right at the start. Also the rush to get to the rockets was always fun as well. This map would definitely make my list of fav maps.

For me it was the delight in pushing their base, stealing their invis, and then summarily killing them and all their friends from that useless area behind their base before they realized what the hell happened.

I have to go ahead and answer "warthog". wink  Of course, it was my "role" on our team to be the gunner, so of course I loved that.

After looking at Bnet, 36.5% of my kills in ranked and 26.5% of my kills in social were in the warthog on Standoff, lol.

Ha! For me, it's 54.6% of my kills in ranked and 49.99% of my kills in social with the hog

Just think how many less it would have been if you were driving around in the Reach Hog.

That gauss 'Hog was like a sniper rifle turret, though.

Thats for sure, I can remember running out of the base in desperation and chucking a sticky at a passing warthog and praying you hit your mark. If not then it was no use to even go outside until you had more nades.

In H3, there were certain people that were hog "drivers". It took a certain skill to drive a hog, keep it alive while your gunner got kills or took down shields for the rest of your team to finish them off. That skill of driving has gone to the wayside in Reach. I was a "driver" in H3, and for that, there was no better map than standoff! At last count, i was the driver for 26 perfection performances! Good times indeed!!

I feel ya there! Driving the Hog was one of my favorite things to do in H3. Then Reach came along and it just wasnt even close to the same. Hopefullyin H4 it handles like H3 or at least better than Reach.

The skill of driving a hog hasn't gone to the wayside in Reach, the hog itself went to the wayside.  Even the best drivers can't keep the hog from flipping.  The horrible gravity/physics plus dmr fire = a flipping hog.  Not to mention the hog is made of cardboard and shoots bb's instead of bullets.

Quoted For Truth!

I discovered my love for driving the hog toward the end of H3, but I still managed to acquire over 3000 wheelman medals. Loved it - no better feeling than to rack up wheelman medals or drive people to various sprees/perfections. I was so excited about driving the hog in Reach. Then I drove the hog in Reach and discovered the above statement.

Driving the hog in Reach is such a tedious task and you have to be extemely mindful of your speed and driving lanes. The slightest error and you flip. DMR and Sniper fire completely wrecks vehicles, so staying alive (while protecting your gunner) is very difficult.

Now I do like the fact they added a cool down to the turret, but as weak as the hog is, it certainly wasn't needed.

Overall, I could live with most of the problems with the hog, IF we had good driving maps in Reach. I remember some epic battles on Valhalla and Standoff as teams fought for laser control and kept their hog running wild.

Wow! Does the gun ever overheat on the hog in H3? I never played H3 mm so I'm not familar with the maps. Is there any weapons on that map to counter the hog? I thought I saw a laser.

You had laser, power drain, and stickies.  However, laser was mid-map and if you controlled the map or both hogs, it was nearly impossible to get outside your base.  If your team was smart, you would have 2 people running a hog, one camp inside their base, and one mid-map near laser.  Camping inside their base forced them to spawn outside and get raped by the hog.  This was especially true if you played btb and were able to control both hogs plus have a person camp inside their base.
