Nat settings!!

Can anyone advise on the ideal settings for online gaming as regards the nat settings on  a talk talk/huawei router. I suspect that my ps3 in particular isnt loving the current set up. I also have a mate who was unable to join one of our rooms who has a similiar set up which i also suspect is due to a nat settings issue.

I can access the router but do not really understand the dark art of  adjusting the settings or indeed what half of them even are?

Thanks in advance

When I get home I think I have a link saved that talks specifically to console gaming and network security settings.  I'll try and find it and post it.

I have 3 consoles (Xbox 360, Xbox One & PS3).  I found with DHCP enabled that I was having NAT related issues, especially with the Xbox One.

My solution was to hard code all my consoles to use the same IP address (I only have one of them on at any time).  I then enabled port fowarding of specific ports back to the hard coded address (192.168.1.253 in my case).

Ports I am forwarding are for PS3 - 4658 TCP/ UDP, 4659 TCP/ UDP, 3478, 3479, 3658 UDP, 5223 TCP, for Xbox - 53 TCP/ UDP, 88 UDP, 3074 TCP/ UDP

With this configuration all the consoles show as Open NAT when I do their respective network tests.

Thanks insanerc for posting the portforward link. Yesterday I set my XB360 to a static IP address and set my router to forward the XBox Live ports for that IP (per the instructions in the link) and so far I'm not having any of the usual issues getting into public lobbies. Most importantly, I've got an OPEN NAT on the XB360 Live network test, not MODERATE.

I have put the ps3 on a dmz just need to sort port forwarding out if necessary. Is 3 ports per console required? Is anything required in the consoles settings to make sure that they talk to these ports?

You only need to use ONE of these things: Port Forwarding, DMZ, or uPnP.  Adding your consoles IP on a DMZ *and* using port forwarding is redundant.  Same with uPnP.

DMZ keeps ALL ports open at all times to whatever device's IP address you add. (Don't add your PC/MAC on the DMZ, it's unsafe)

Port Forwarding keeps the ports you choose open all of the time

uPnP automatically opens ports that are requested by outgoing traffic

Well now I'm having problems with Titanfall and joining with a party.  On the xbox under internet settings it shows Open NAT but I can't join the game with anyone.   I'm using ATT and the password I have to get in and change any settings isn't working and the help function is shit.

Did you change the password to something or is it just whatever the default username/password was?

All other online functions are working on the Xbox One?

The password is suppose to be the one that ATT assigned to the router, which is printed on a sticker on the router.  Never changed it and the current one isn't working so I have to call them I guess.   Yep all the other functions work on the x1.  Never had a problem on the 360 with doing parties.  Weird thing is though after posting that above I tried joining the party again and it finally worked, so I have no clue whats going on.

@ammodawg - that's kinda like the problem I was having before hardcoding the IP address.  I would find the Xbox One would work intermittently after I had been using the Xbox 360 just beforehand.  What I think was happening is that the 360 would open up ports tied to it's IP address.  When I shut the 360 down and started the Xbox One, I think those previously opened ports were still being associated with the 360 address.  Until they timed out, things were just wieird. Don't know if it was a rounter issues or a console issue.

No proof that any of this is actually the case but I don't recall any problems since I hardcoded a common address to my 3 consoles.  of course that strategy only works because I only ever have one console on at a time.
