The weapon has been confirmed to NOT be a grenade launcher.

I think you're on to something. It seems like there is a heavy Forerunner influence on this new planet, so my guess is we'll have Forerunner weapons along side the human and covie variants we already have.
Edit: Upon further inspection this weapon has a UNSC logo, so it's human. I suspect we will have more Furerunner weapons though.
Yeah, when they said that this game is the biggest overhaul to the weapon sandbox, I thought that the Forerunner influence was the main driver of changes to the sandbox. Possibly new grenade(s) and weapon equivalents, I'd guess.

Oh man....where was an awesomesauce weapon like this when I was struggling against all those dratted Brutes on Halo 3? Especially commanders that BOUNCE OFF STICKY GRENADES!
Here's hoping ammo is readily available, instead of having it be like a Covie sniper rifle that once it's empty, it's useless!
