Titanfall looks incredible. I'll never give up on Halo's story, but Titanfall looks as competitive as Halo 5 should be.

Gamespot interview with Frank O'Connor on competitive Halo.  http://www.gamespot.com/features/frank-oconnor-on-the-future-of-competitive-halo-6414160/

Seriously? I like Frankie but by the time you finish reading you should seriously realize, he has no idea what will happen. If 343i cannot promise spectator mode for the next title right now, then it is not a serious option in their plans. In my opinion he should be able to say without any doubt, that feature will be in the game.

There's an awful lot of measured, PR-laden statements in there that sounds a lot like the last couple of months up to the Halo 4 release.  There's a lot of lip service being made here to the community.

The ghost of Bungie clearly presides over 343 right now.  Everything from what Bungie did right and wrong, from the engine the game uses, and expectation from the community at large is almost a hindrance for 343.  I'd love to see 343/Microsoft step the hell up and support their product the way Riot supports League of Legends, and the way Blizzard supports World Of Warcraft and Starcraft.  I'd like to have seen Frankie respond a lot more to that and say more on the topic.  If Halo is going to be a niche product, then there's no earthly reason that Microsoft can't support the shit out of it and do that niche better than anyone else could dream to.

This is such a grand idea! However, at this point they may have let Halo slip off the competitve radar for too long. Players have moved to other games like COD, LoL, StarCraft, Dota that Halo is way down on the list of competitive games.

The Global Championship does give some validity to Halo. I mean, 200k for first and 75k for second is a nice statement of support. I only wish Frankie would have actually given more information about future plans so people could talk about it and get excited. However, this "to be announced later" stuff is not going to keep people playing.

Also, on the non-committal about spectator mode is just lame. I am almost to the point I just don't care to read (even though I will) anything Frankie has to say because it's always "we can't talk about that right now" or excuses about that it's tough to do.

I remember watching the Halo/Bungie videodocs and how close all the Halo games came to missing key features, so it is not a big surprise he doesn't know if spectator mode it will make it.

To me at this point, a new Halo missing Spectator mode would be as bad a mistake as the Warthog being on the cutting room floor. Do you think Frankie wouldn't guarantee Warthogs will be in the game? Of course he would guarantee it. I don't feel I have any serious need for Spectator mode but this topic is about the competitive communities hopes. That community should be able to hear a guarantee for must have features. Not hearing it means it's an add-on that might make it. I wouldn't feel encouraged right now if I was a competitive player looking for a strong Halo E-sports future.

Halo 5 is going to be better?  Probably.  It's not hard to be better than the worst game in franchise history.

Frankie is being interviewed?  Great.  maybe we will hear more about how they will have the most awesome competitive multiplayer ever.  He just wont speak about the cluttered, oversized, peice of feces that they will call the map rotation.

I read the reason Spectator Mode wasn't included in Halo 4 was because it kills bandwidth, which I believe. Dedicated servers should fix that, though.

Good leadoff question. Frank had an opportunity to "continue to sustain the game" by making a game sustaining announcement.  He talked about future 343 events, but should've been a lot more upfront if he really wanted to sustain the game at this point.

I would've liked some non-competitive questions about where he thinks the game stands right now and lessons learned...and maybe some high level statements about its future direction.

As non-commital and vague as advertised.  What I'd really like to see is 343 make some statements about sprint and map design.  If Halo 5 doesn't launch with at least 3 good maps that work with its game mechanics, I won't be buying it.

As far as console games go I still think Halo has the potential to be the most competitive. Halo needs a competitive community because that community gets the most face time in promos and at events. The competitive community is also the most passionate and vocal about the game. If you can connect with that community and even if its just 10% of the Halo population they will be the one keeping forums alive and pushing the game and that spills over into the casual gamers side. Now the big question is how can they connect with them.

I feel like Halo used to be the game that drew people for 3-4 years per game, with updates and support, and players getting better over time, etc.  CoD has a new version every year in November, so the community just moves on to the next version and ditches the previous one, constantly.  Halo has the retention going for them, but only if they keep supporting and giving the people who are loyal what they want.
