So I have been entrenched in a wicked inner struggle with myself the past few weeks over whether or not to attend the LAN.  One day, I think it would be a lot of fun.  The next day, I have little or no desire to go.  So push me off the fence, one way or the other.

Pros:

-Video games, duh!

-I'll be getting to meet some of the people I've been playing with the past few months.

-It's only a 20-30 minute drive from where Iive, and I would be spending a lot less cash than many of you in order to attend.

Cons:

-Some of you people honestly scare me!

-I'm not the most outgoing person in the world.  Read: borderline anti-social.

-The only game I would be remotely competitive at would be Forza 2

-I have never consumed alcohol and have no desire to start.  (Apparently, alcohol is a big deal with you LANners)

-I'm cheap.

I know I'm putting myself out there with this post, but I've resigned myself to not being able to make a decision on my own.  Be gentle!

if you are only a 20 min drive away you pretty much have to go.  I wouldn't worry about being borderline anti social, that probably applies to half the site, we are all gamers afterall.

"lbsutke" wrote:
there are plenty of people that do not drink at the Lan. I assume we entertain them with our AssHatedness (New word, all mine).

I would not worry about being competitive, no one is going to change there mind about you if you are good or not. I mean hell, Beldar is going and he is horrible..

Getting to meet these people you have been gaming with brings your friendships even closer then they are currently online.

Take me for example, I am a giant piece of poo, I went to the lan last year and the people still pretended to like me and even would talk to me and not run away...

I would say, since you are so close you should take advantage of just being able to drive in. Worst cause scenerio, you hate it and you drive back home that is just 30 minutes away.

Competitive?  Who cares about being competitive.  It's all about playing games with people.

Most of us are borderline anti social so no worries there.

You get to meet and become friends with some of the asshats (as LB put it)

I've attended 3 or 4 lans with 2o2p people and have never taken a drink of alcohol so if you'd like you can join me in making fun of all the drunk people.

Free food and beverages (at least a little anyway)

I'm driving six hours to get there and some people much longer than that, if you are so close it would honestly be a sin punishable by lashing if you didn't attend.

As for being cheap, what's 95.00 to play video games for 2 full days basically and meeting and making friends is priceless.

You'll laugh alot. (good for your health)

And did I mention the people.  Honestly dude some of these folks I met, if they were in trouble or needed me for some reason I'd fly across the country to be there for them.

Plus the strap-on raffle draw is always a blast. 8O

And we are all harmless.

What more do you need?  Buy your ticket now.

Exactly. Don't mistake blog/forum whoring as a social behavior...I'm guessing that pretty much everyone is going to feel a little weird the first day.

"twistedcaboose" wrote:
Actually you'd be surprised, it's not weird at all.  It's like sitting in your house playing with everyone and talking shit and visiting.  Last year most everyone walked right up to me or me to them and I already knew them.  People are the same in person as on xbox live or PC.  Acutally most everything is checked at the door and for a couple of days we are all glad we are with people that understand us and our habits and accept us no matter what.

Of course you should go.  The fact that you do not drink only makes it better since you are driving home each night!  I do not know a lot of people outside my clan, but that will be half the fun.  I have never even played half the games at the LAN, so you will not be the worst at many of them.  I am driving up from the 'Nati with a guy from my clan whom I never met.  We are also sharing a room.  I don't even know his real name.  Wow, he kinda sounds like a prostitute....I better rethink this.

Except - the majority of 2o2p people that I play with - aren't going to the LAN...I don't care though. I'm sure it will still be fun.

No playing with MJ's balls this year either, you sick bastard..

The first LAN I went to I only knew 2-3 people and never met any face to face.  Then the next I knew 15-20 and had met 3-4 face to face.  This time I'll probably know even a few more recognize many and when it's all over I'll have a lot of people I'll know.  Don't worry about whether or not you've played with the people before you'll find everyone pretty much takes the gaming and the comradery in the same spirit as you do.

I can't guarantee you'll not be nervous about your first moments at the LAN. I can guarantee that any trepidations you'd have will dissolve away shortly and more importantly I'll guarantee that you'll regret not going if you don't.

Glad you got off the fence.  It was good to meet you Mutus.  I had a great time running some races with you and being able to see the expressions on people's faces as I put them into walls.

You seem to have an affinity for slamming people into the wall, Bigs.  Must get a lot of practice.

I have to admit, I usually try to race as clean as possible, but it was a blast coming up behind someone and putting my front quarter-panel into their rear tire and spinning them out for no reason at all.  And my first experience with LMS was a blast as well...literally.

Thanks for all the races.

See ya online

Mad props to you guys. The lan was an awesome success. I had a great time as I'm sure everyone else did. Good job Doodi/Phreak and anyone else on setting everything up. For all that missed it, It was an excellent venue. Hotel was great and so was the room we were in. I think we only tripped the breaker once!

ok phreak i don't mean to bust yer chops but that's just bull girlfriend...you were the hostess for the entire event.  anytime someone looked out of place, you were there to introduce them to people and make them feel at home.

that lan was a success because of you as well as the other mods.  you guys were amazing hosts.

i have to throw out some love to syschaos as well.  i didn't know her from anyone before the lan and she was just really nice.  thanks!

Huge thanks to doodi and Irene, for those of you who dont know her, she is a wow player that was a huge help to doodi.  NG massive step up this year on the raffle stuff.  :)

Miss you guys already.

Exactly what JRock said. Phreak you made EVERYONE feel welcomed and at home. For newbies and veterans at the lan you broke the ice(I won't say how but people have to attend to know) and I also have to give a shout out to MIKE JAMES!

Yeah, thats no bullshit Kingpin.  Phreak was very awesome (as was MJ), so nobody should buy this "I had very little to do with anything" bologna she's slicing up.  :D

I second the sentiment on the excellent job and the fact that Phreak was the "unofficial hostess" of the event. I she made me feel like one of the crew from the bus ride to WizardCon on Friday. This was my first Lan, and with a few lessons learned (check out my blog for details), I will be back for #4. My stomach has finally begun to recover.

Yes Phreaks you were the official hostess.

Doodi was the official geek, for starting all this.

I will say Dsmooth was up early Sun. being friendly and helpful to us who were downstairs at 10am.

Jolly, you and you're family were the bright spot of the weekend! Mainly Megan.

SyS, I Will beat you at Guitar Hero next year! I don't think anyone but Sharp did and he did it playing with his teeth!

It was a great to meet all you. I made lots of new friends and got to meet lots of old friends.

I can't wait for next year!

What a blast.  I dont' know if I should have come to work today, because all I did was daydream about what I was doing this weekend.  Miss you all.

Thanks for setting it all up and I definitely will be back again next year.

:D  One of my better stories, I believe.   That guy was Rodney Dangerfield's brother, ya know?  Just roll with the punches.  Not many folks could do that.  Thanks for hanging with me at the airport and the invite!
