Builds

Pretty new to guild wars here, so i'd like a bit of advice with regards to stat stacking.

In wow, resiliance became the thing to stack before that it was pretty much HP and agility after a bit of defence for pvp.  So how does it work in guildwars?

At the moment, my hunter is stacking Toughness through the survival tree and i'm mainly using snares/protection for the spells.  Is this the best way to go, or should i be all out dam?

Short bow, with 1 hand axe and horn for the secondary weapon swap.   Using a wolf also as the howl gives a small amount of hp to nearby players.

Any advice welcome :)

I haven't played my Ranger in a while but I had tried out both a burst damage build stacking Power, Precision, Crit damage and a more tanky build stacking Toughness, Vitality and Condition damage for PvP.

The burst build was fun, it relied mainly on Quickening Zephyr and traits/signets that granted me and my pet Stability.  Using a Greatsword + Axe/Warhorn combo you could do crazy amounts of damage very quickly but the downside was you were very squishy.

The Tanky build focused more on surviving longer in fights and being able to burn opponents down using condition damage through traps plus either Shortbow or Greatsword and Axe/Torch.

I like the Ranger profession but honestly I think it currently has issues in PvP and they are probably the least desired for tournament play.  Pets still have serious issues that need addressing and many of the Ranger's utilities are just terrible.  Spirits for example, even fully traiting for them they still die in seconds just from AoE.  Rangers were pretty badass in beta and a lot of people cried OP so ANet nerfed 'em.  Now there's really nothing a Ranger can do that another profession can't do better.

Thank you for the comment beefynutcase - it gave me some thing to think about and perhaps, if i stack a reasonable amount of toughness and burst damage it may give me just enough to do some thing.  It did seem a little week in pvp, any snare i put down got through in an instant...:D

I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do with my Warrior.  I need a build that's good for PVE and WvWvW.  I'm at 80 now and I need to hurry up and make that decision so I can start gearing up.  What I really like is Sword/Axe with a Rifle.  But I don't think the sword and axe work together.  So I switched it up to Great Sword, which is nice but I'm not in love with it..  Also, melee is brutal in WvWvW.

I started using the longbow on my Warrior in WvW a couple days ago.  The AoE is really nice and it's really the only option for Warrior when it comes to assaulting a keep and killing fuckers on the wall.  If you trait for it you can increase the range on it to make it even more effective.  The number 3 ability hits really hard on multiple targets and the burst skill can set a bunch of people on fire.  You can also set up combo fields with the longbow, try laying Combustive Shot at your feet then swapping to axe/axe.  Whirling Axe shoots fire in all directions and does some nasty damage.  Any kind of leap will give you a fire shield.

It would seem the the ranger class seems to be quite limited in its abilites so far - (level 21) I'll keep progressing though and use it a learning curve for the new game.

I'll probably end up using a tank/healer to support our pvp :D

Spirits Unbound is a trait that lets your spirits move and follow you. You can simply walk them out of AoE when you see the red circles on the ground.

Traps are nice when you unlock the trait that lets you throw them. It's the best way for the ranger to deal AoE damage.

The signets are terribly boring.

Yeah, I've tried that build before.  It's pretty nice when the spirits are up, but they are still so easy for others to target and kill and then you have to wait 60 seconds to re-summon.

Signets are boring but the trait that lets you share the active abilities granted to pets from signets is pretty sweet.  One gives you 8 seconds of Stability and another makes you grow larger and do extra damage.

I am running an elementalist.  probably squishiest class out there but i am having fun with it.  I like it.  I am running a variation of this build here and follow these tactics.  great for PvE and decent for 1v1 not so good for WvW.

I am going off this guide for my base style of play.

http://www.thehealthygamer.com/2012/09/06/guild-wars-2-elementalist-scepter-dagger-leveling-build/

I have tuned the build a little.  I am not 80 yet but this is what i am currently gunning for.

http://www.gw2build.com/builds/simulator.php#1.1.2.0.13.0.0.0.0.0.3.22.14.17.24.2.2.12.6.5.0.19.21.0.33.0.0.0.0.0.64.65.0.20.20.10.0.20

I think its a fun class to play. Focusing on DMG with survivability.  A lot of kiting the enemy using blinds and knockdowns .  Also lots of attunement switching during a battle.  Also tweaking it all time., currently looking for ways that I can knock down my cooldown times for attunement switching.
