Auction House or Craft

Wondering what peoples take is on spending the money to upgrade your Blacksmith and Jeweler vs just selling all your gear for money and shopping in the Auction House.

I just bought a weapon in the AH because I can't seem to find anything better than a damage of 25 with the specific stats I want attached to my weapon.  Went to the AH, spent 50g's or so and got a 51 dmg axe with huge intelligence and health on kills stats I wanted plus some bonus stats.

When I started out, I had intended to upgrade my blacksmith and salvage all my gear and sell the commons to the merchant.  But now i'm starting to think of gear the same as gold, sell it all so I can buy what I really want in the AH.

With Gems i'm not sure it's even worth the money it would take to forge higher quality ones out of lower quality ones, VS just buying them.

Most of my good gear has either been vendor, AH, or loot buddy received. Have not had much luck with crafting yet and I don't currently have the gold to go on a crafting spree in order to get what I need.

I sold about 200 Subtle Essence and 150 tooth today though through the auction house, made about 5-7.5k on it. I figure that's 5-7.5k that can go towards something I really want/need in the auction house rather than gambling a 1/5 of it away on one crafted piece.

Gems are the same way. Super expensive to craft up to higher levels.

I probalby have six of those magic item salvage jars with 100 units each in them, ist aht the 'essence' stuff?  And i think i have two of the tooth things full up to, i think they go to 50.  I should thing about selling that stuff.  Then I wonder if the sale value of 100 magic weapons to the merchant would give me more money or less money than salvaging them into essence.

The economy in this game is surprisingly deep .  I'll have to pay more attention to what the merchants are giving me for magic items and do some fuzzy math.

If the AH is anything like WoW it will eventually calm down and become reasonable after the new release surge. People are all over the map price wise with 100 identical legendaries thinking their auction is the one that will sell for 200,000+ gold.

right, I've started dropping what ever I think I should get for an item by about 5-10k. I'd rather have the gold right now than have it sit up there for 2 days and get no bites or not have it sell at all.

I'm in normal around level 28 or something.  My strategy is that if the value of an item is > 100 gold I sell it.  if it's < 100 gold I dismantle it.   The cost curve for crafting is a little steep at this point for me.  I'm finding a lot of yellows these days so my blue crafted items are not as good in most cases, therefore I stopped crafting. There are legendaries and set items that can be crafted at higher levels though.

I do miss knowing what you are crafting. I've crafted so much stuff I can't use for my "main" that I need to save 100k for a new stash tab. I'm making do with a bank alt for now.

you'll always get more on the auction block, but you have to wait a day and some times won't sell.  Plus you only have 10 slots.  Much faster and easier to just sell to a merchant if the item isn't super duper rare.
