2 Golden Keys. Anyone used one yet?

So for those that don't already know, there is a Gold Chest in Sanctuary where it spawns you in. You need a Gold Key to use this. Now, if you pre-ordered, you already have 1. But there is a way to get a second one. In the main menu, int he Extras option, there is an option for a Shift Code. Shift is apparently something that Gearbox has, like a newsletter, game update service. But if you sign up, you get another Gold Key the next time you sign in. And they havent spammed me yet so it's been worth it so far.

Next, has anyone used a Gold Key yet? What level were you? What did you get? Was it worth it?

I ask, because as far as I can tell, the 2 keys I have are attached to my gamertag, not the individual characters. So I am extremely hesitant to use one. Thinking I may wanna use them at Levels 25 & 45, something like that. Thoughts?

edit - For me this was much better than the already documented exploits that give you more Gold Keys. So if you want to do this shit right, this will get you another one. 44

I just cracked it open today, here's what I got from it.

This thing is like a slag mortar. Rediculous how much damage it shells out.

And if you signed up for Shift, there's more keys in your future!

President of Gearbox has been posting multiple use codes (you can only use it once, but 10k people can use it) for a gold key. So before ya start playing, just take a look at his twitter https://twitter.com/duvalmagic

Those guns are ridiculous! So you waited until your early 30's to open it? Was thinking around the same time, late 20's, early 30's.

I accidentally used one of my gold keys. When you respawn out of the fast travel point on Sanctuary for the first time, the golden chest was right there as you turn the corner. The first reaction any vault hunter has when they see a chest is, "F-yeah! Another chest! Let's open it!" That's what I did and when I did, I realized that I had just used my gold key... I turned the console off before it had a chance to autosave but I don't think I was fast enough because now when I stand in front of the chest, it shows "1x key" on screen. I don't know if that means that I only have 1 key left or that it taked 1 key to open the chest. I'm afraid to try.

The chest should be better marked or it should at least prompt you when you open it - "Do you want to use a gold key? Y? N?" I was level 6 at the time and am now level 28... I think I'm pretty much at the point where I can open it and hope I find another gold key along the way before I hit the end boss.

dont feel too bad, I did the exact same thing only I was a lvl13. Sucks cause I can totally see using it in the 30 ish range. I'll have to wait for some good loot drops instead!

It is marked. It's a gold chest to match the gold key and when you look at it it shows the little key icon beside it showing that it costs 1 key to open. But I wouldn't sweat opening it too much. The stuff in there will be purple, but it's not guaranteed to be extra awesome or anything. You're just as likely to get a shield and grenade mod as you are a good gun. And with the Pitchford giving away a key a day you might as well go for it.

I stupidly used 2 of my 3 gold keys.  I'm sitting on the 3rd until I'm in the high 20s...  or even later.

Ive used two, one at 10 and one at 15 and I was happy with what I got.  Still have one for later and with the give aways, I'm betting we will have plenty for a bit. Michael is still giving decent stuff everytime I have visited him as well. If I dont want to use it, they are usually worth some coin.

Yes. One gun was garbage. The other was spectacular. Both were shot guns.

Don't be afraid of the keys folks. They give away more practically every other day. It's not like the chest holds special guaranteed good weapons, it's just purple stuff. Could be 2 class mods for characters you don't use.

Used one of my 2 at lvl 16. Got an awesome Slag assault rifle and a Corrosive SMG. Figured I would get more keys anyway, and I still have one left. A note to those that do though. Take advantage of ClapTraps Secret Stash. The two guns I got, once I'm done using them, will go in there to be held for any new characters I start later. Figure I may as well get all I can out of them.

Since i got one in tonights beta give-a-way, they did unlimited keys one per account for 30 minutes so once i got one i immediatly opened the chest.  I was treated to shield awesomeness.  two purple shields one with 3000 capacity with high elemental resistances and +1200 health and one not quite as good in stats but it has fire immunity.  So keeping that one as well.  then i finished a mission and got a 900dmg acid sniper rifle!   having a sweet loot night!

For those that are into this kinda thing, there is a glitch for unlimited gold chest opening. It takes 2 people to do it. Person #1 goes into the fast travel menu and scrolls through the locations while #2 opens the gold chest. Then while #1 continues scrolling, #2 immediately loots and opens the chest again. Even without a gold key it'll open. Once you've opened it the 2nd time it's properly glitched and #1 can come and look at all the loot but only #2 can continue to open the chest as long as you like. But when you fast travel away that stops it.

It seems that I will simply never really "get" why you would want to do something like this. It essentially breaks the game. Don't you lose any real sense of accomplishment if you are using an entire glitched arsenal? What's the point of continuing to play? For me, part of the main draw is "the hunt". Finding the best guns and equipment I can, usually after a difficult as hell fight where I may have actually died a few times **GASP**

It's your money, and your game, play it the way you want. Guess I'm just failing to see the advantage of playing the game while using what is essentially a cheat code.

P.S. Not directed at you Taco, just ranting about the whole general idea of it

I guess it's not really much different from just standing in Moxxie's and spinning the slots for an hour. Either way you're bound to get some decent purple stuff, this just saves time. I've done the slot thing quite a bit and really even after getting some good gear out of there, I grew out of it pretty much by the next level. Just because something is purple doesn't necessarily mean it's the best option.

The difference is, assuming you've gotten your money the ole fashioned way, you are paying a price for the items from the slot machines.  I only mess with those machines when I have a good amount of dough saved up.  I'm with Bigwig on this.  I see know point in bending the rules with the game.  It takes the fun out of it for me.

I would do the glitch if I thought the games difficulty was ramping up but the drops weren't keeping pace. So far though I've found a new piece of gear at just the right time.

Having played the game a bit more, I recommend saving your keys and using them just before starting your go at TVHM. Odds are pretty good the gear you have at the end of PT1 isn't crap compared to what will drop even from bullymongs in PT2. Using the chest before I started TVHM I got some decent weapons that took me to Sanctuary and a little past that. It makes no difference to the chest if you're on normal or TVHM, by the way. A level 36 purple shield is a level 36 purple shield.

I have 9 or so unused keys at this point and have finished TVHM.  Hopefully if I create another character on this same profile, the keys will move over to that new character.

Yea, they do. I have about 3 characters all on the same profile and the number of keys I have remains a constant across them all.

Keys are xbox profile specifc, not character specific. Any character can use them on your xbox profile.
