I'm just back from a trip, and starting to read about the 1.1.4 "go fast" major rebalance patch that apparently hit yesterday. Seems like it will really shake up PvP, and might tip the balance in the player's favor for raid activities. Any opinions from those who have tried it?
I've done the weekly planet challenge and some Heroic Strikes and it does go faster (there is something constantly going on on Mercury now instead of having to sit around and wait). But the content was still the same - I was really looking forward to the modifiers to the Heroic Strikes, but that got pushed back. I'll probably try some crucible tomorrow to see how that is - and Iron Banner Control sounds like it's going back to the old way, so that will pull me from under my rock for a try as well. I've heard that failure in the Nightfall is back to "boot to orbit" and if that's the case I won't be there much - but I'll give it a try sometime this week as well.
I am trying to follow all the changes and updates. They have me excited, but I'll wait to jump back in when the next DLC drops (I got the deluxe digital ed.). For now I'm enjoying AC Origins and Metro, with an all too occasional sprinkling of The Division.
Ummm, guess I haven't been paying attention. Powerful rewards are capped at 340 now?
Can someone please explain to me the ways to earn items at my power level now?

Weekly clan engrams are bugged. don't collect them until it's fixed. The might go with correct power to your inventory on Tue.
Today's patch brought a few changes/updates to some exotic armor. Also noted is heroic strikes now have a 25% chance to drop a "powerful engram" up to 360 (or 365 w/ mod).
I still can't be bothered to do heroic strikes unless there are decent modifiers, but it's good there is now at least a chance to get a good drop.
I'm not finding the Faction Rally Renown system to be very satisfying. If it only affected Lost Sectors it might not be as annoying.
Earning Renown comes at the price of losing power. It makes the open world more dangerous and this affects all of the day to day grind activities. I have some interest in the Faction gear this time around but playing the game has become more annoying than usual.
I don't understand renown very well yet. What do you mean "at the price of losing power"? The biggest effect on me is that once I'm getting close to five renown, I play very cautiously to avoid dying. Is that what you mean? Or does our effective power actually scale lower as we get more renown?
Either way, I was a bit put off by the different feel at first. But I am the worst at exploring Destiny's game systems. As soon as I have a plan that works, I rarely deviate from it. So I feel like they're doing me a favor by mixing things up and bumping me out of my rut. Doing public events (which is one of my favorite things anyway) and lost sectors definitely feel fresh again. It will take me a while to decide how much I like the specific changes.
Adding to this, Renown is lost on Lost Sector completion, during Fast Travel and Orbiting.

Faction Rallies now features the “Renown” system
After pledging to a faction, players may earn Renown by completing a public event or patrol, or by defeating high-value targets on destinations
Players who loot a Lost Sector with Renown active will receive significantly more faction tokens than usual—the more stacks of Renown they have, the more faction tokens they earn
Renown is lost when players are defeated by enemies, so be careful when you're attempting to loot a Lost Sector with high Renown!
Renown increases the level of challenge in gameplay
Health regeneration is vastly reduced (all stack levels)
Enemy kills have a chance to drop health orbs (all stack levels)
Player damage decreased (scales with stack, up to 5)
Incoming damage increased (scales with stack, up to 5)
It appears to me that the renown challenge is the big deal in all this. Get to 5 and loot a lost sector (daily) for a bunch of tokens. After that, the number of faction tokens in (all?) activities is based on renown level. As for having to play more carefully, that has not been an issue for me since I generally do that anyway, thanks to my experiences in HALO Mythic SLASO campaign missions. I am still just grinding enough to get the weekly powerful gear, but in doing so have gotten a pretty large number of tokens. Losing power does really make one more of a tactician -- gotta take out that add over there to get my power back -- but that kind of experience ultimately benefits in the end game activities like heroic strikes, nightfall, and the raid(s).
Thanks for the info and comments, guys. Now that you mention it, I was wondering why my health wasn't coming back yesterday. Ha!
My normal operating procedure to quickly finish heroic public events involves allowing myself to be killed repeatedly (during injection rig and taken blight especially). So I've got deeply engrained bad habits that have to be overcome to do well under the new renown regime. Wish I had more time to practice this week. Getting on a plane tomorrow.
My current system is to do a public event and then run a quick patrol in the area - then go into the closest Lost Sector. This allows a decently quick way to complete the Lost Sector with a renown of 4 (with 5 being max).
Also, I believe if you have a full set of faction gear, you will get extra renown when completing an event. In other words, completing a patrol with full faction gear will give you 2 renown insead of 1 renown.
Unfortunately, I pledged to Dead Orbit this time (Graviton Lance catalyst FTW) and I have none of their gear on any of my characters.
Also, another helpful hint is to use Crimson since kills can regen health.

Saw that. Yawn.
Looking forward to the new story missions next month. Are they promising a new raid lair with the next expansion, or am I reading too optimistically?
I imagine there will be a new lair. Guess I can add that to the list of things I've not been able to do in D2...lol
IHB. I hate bungie.
Clan engrams are supposed to be fixed with tomorrow's hot fix (among other things).
The weekly milestones are the best way to get small bumps in power. However, the raid is where it's at for the best loot for big jumps in power.

Good catch about the strike engrams! Totally missed that.
My first Clan engram of the week. 340. So much hate for Bungie.
Clan XP engrams are providing poweful gear; clan crucible engrams are not. Just proves that D2 is half baked.
Thanks.
Yes, as Achy stated, only the XP Milestone will provide a powerful engram. The others are just normal engrams.
I think this is how it's always been. The milestones grant powerful, weekly rewards while the other engrams we get are "normal" loot drops.
Mostly just doing the weekly flashpoints to level up.
FORSAKEN, I guess so, probably.
Forsaken (fall expansion) summary from Reddit linked below. Lots to look forward to!
