How to get Legendary Marks when starting out.

Just restarted in Destiny after a large break and finished the Wolves and Taken King story. I've got a few quests to finish but I'm having a hard time since my light is only 215. How can I get the new Legendary Marks to upgrade my armor and weapons to advance when there is no way to join the strikes ect that award them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

FYI, the Strikes are a problem as you say. Even if the option to play is open, being under leveled with Light is very limiting.

Have you joined a Faction? Perhaps you can do what I did and advanced your Faction rep using the piles of excess resources I had, like Plasteel plating, motes and Commendations. I got a few Legendary items plus a few to throw away.

I have a bunch of that stuff left over from when I stopped that never was turned in. What stuff is no longer used that I can get rid off? I don't want to turn stuff in that will be needed down the road.

You can get 15 Marks each day from the Daily Heroic Story. Also, 15 Marks each day from the Daily Crucible playlist.

Some story missions offer Marks too. Also, dismantling Legendary gear will give you Marks.

You'll get Blue gear that will continue to push your Light up, so don't be in too much of a hurry to level stuff with Marks.

You won't really need Legendary Mark gear for a while.  Daily Crucible, Story, and Quests will award marks but you can save those for a  few key pieces near the top.

The big take away that you need to understand is two fold.  One, rarity (or gear color) doesn't matter anymore.  You will replace purple/legendary gear with greens almost immediately and its ok. Two, when engrams and items drop, they drop based on your current light level. On average, stuff will start appearing that’s ~10-15 light ahead of your current level, then you turn around and equip the new stuff, which in turn will drop better engrams, and so on, and so on.

The key to this is when engrams drop and you go back to the tower to decode you need to make sure you have the highest light gear already equipped.  Also, only decode one at a time.  If you decode one item and its a higher level then your current gear, equip it before you move on to decoding the next.  This will create a leap frog effect and your level will shoot up fast.

I went from light level 230 to 289 in about a day or less.

Make sure you check the perks on your Legendary armor and weapons before dismantling them. The whole purpose of being able to infuse is to bring along lower light gear to be top-tier. I have a level 230 Legendary chest I may Infuse because it has good Solar armor perks.

Garth, can you run the Daily Heroic Story at a light level of 215 and finish? I've been wanting a good scout rifle and have been going back to my Deep Below scout in some of the game. I'm hoping the one from the gunsmith is good when it comes on Wednesday.

I'm not sure what Light you need for the Daily Heroic. Yesterday's was the one where you sneak around to gather Crota's essence, so it was fairly easy.

I would be happy to help you do some stuff if you need an extra gun.

I also finished leveling my Hunter and Titan to 40 yesterday, so I will always have plenty of quests that need to be completed.

Badmin, thanks for the info on having your best stuff equipped when turning in engrams. I'll make sure I remember that.

If you complete the quests (not bounties) from the various vendors, you will get some good "starter" purple stuff.  Upgrade that with blues that drop.  Hope for a drop or two of purple stuff from random events.  By the time I hit 40, I had a purple for 2 weapon slots and 2 armor slots.  By the end of the next day, all slots had a purple.  Then you just infuse the good ones with blues that drop later.  I am getting blue weapon drops that are 290+.    DONT infuse something that is purple just because it is purple unless it has good perks - wear the blue instead until you get a better purple.  Also - exotic armor purchased from Xur is 280.  Exotic armor and weapon drops AND from Xur's engrams are 290.  So its worth taking a shot or two at engrams first to see if you get lucky.

Once you get to 260 or so you can run Heroic strikes and you will get a lot of purple drops from those.  Ive only had to purchase one armor piece (and of course the same slot dropped again within an hour).  Infusing is much cheaper, and the blues drop by the dozens.  ALSO YOU GET RANDOM DROPS OF LEGENDARY MARKS FROM RUNNING MORE THAN ONE STRIKE IN A ROW.  I had about 40 drop in one 5 game run.  There is no hard cap on these, so you can essentially farm them endlessly if that is your thing.

The nightfall is pretty easy this week as there are no burns but a buff to primary weapons.  Do that before the reset if you can.

Also - they may nerf it (honestly they need to), but make sure you use those "Three of Coins" things from Xur.  I got three exotics using about 8 of them.  4th Horseman, Hawkmoon and Chest of Alpha Lupai.  Also farm the Court of Oryx.  You have a small chance a drops each time, and if you use the rune it is significantly better.  I got a number of purples from that.

I have two Warlocks, so I've been able to pass down the good 2nd tier stuff. As a result, my second Warlock has ranked up pretty fast without spending a lot of time in the game. He just runs the bounties and some quests to get guns leveled. My Titan is the red-headed step child though, so he is lagging behind. I finally broke down and bought him a legendary chest and gauntlets. Haven't spent any marks for Warlock gear yet.

As mentioned, infusing is good way to speed light level. I discovered that your characters can share individual armor pieces for the infusion process. For example, a Warlock can infuse/upgrade a Warlock chest piece using an unwanted Titan chest piece. It's expensive to do a lot of infusing... so I suggest waiting fill you have at least a 20 point spread between gear pieces, to get more bang for the buck.

Minotaur brings up a good point about infusing. Do not waste your marks leveling a (for example) 220 helmet with a 225 helmet. The current theory suggests an 80% increase toward the infused piece. If this is true, infusing a 230 piece into a 220 piece, should grant you a 228 piece.
