It's pretty squared off, would have liked to see a more rounded design similar to the ipads or asus. But it looks ok, looks just like my windows mobile phone and i'll prob get one when they come out.
Not sure if i'll wait for the Pro version or stick with the lighter RT. I imagine moving to the Pro's quad core i5 will significantly reduce battery life. it has a bigger battery, 45 watts to compensate which may be partially why the Pro is 1/2 a pound more in weight.
If microsoft wants to take market share though, well actually it's not even really taking market share it's creating market share. Tablets are too expensive right now for 'common folk' to have them aside from the crappy Coby and other shitty name brands. The Fire sold well because of it's price point, so did the HP table with PalmOS because of the fire sale and blowing htem out for 99 bucks. If microsoft can bring the RT to market for 299, it'll fly off the shelves. But if they want to sit up there in the 499/699 price ranges then i think they're going to have an uphill climb. Maybe that's why they're bringing the table out themselves, so they can eat some of the cost in exchange for market share. THey did it with the xbox and they're coming late to the tablet game.
This is going to make the Zune look wildly successful.
I think they will keep the price down and go after market share. Then once it's in everybodys hands they can release the PC Windows 8 OS and tout that it is needed for complete conectivity to each other. That's where the profit will come from. Then shortly after that, the Xbox 720 that will require a PC and tablet running Win8 for all your home entertainment needs. And none of it will communicate with apple anything.
I think if they release MS Office for this device, and delay (or even cancel) MS Office for the iOS, they could put a dent in iPad sales. I think you would see quite a bit more business and student sales of the Surface with Office functionality.
I think that because they didn't announce a price point, it will be high. It's a huge mistake IMO. At stated above, they should go after the lower market share. The people who are willing to spend $500-$700 on a tablet already own an IPad. Make it $300 or lower? It would fly off the shelves.
Can I connect my 360 to it via HDMI?
NO the HDMI on the surface is an output not an input.
I just watched this video, it's a the full length announcement press conference. It doesn't sound like it's gonna be budget priced, the Pro will be comparable to ultrabooks prices out there and the RT will be comparable in price to ARM based tablest out there now.
I'm pretty impressed with the 'PRO' version, it sounds like it really could be a full laptop replacement being able to do the best of business class PC tasks as well as have all the entertainment options of a tablet or windows home PC. I'll be getting one for sure, the Pro is the product i've been anticipating for years.

Reports are that the two models will cost $600 and $1,000 respectively. I'm not sure what Microsoft is smoking. If they want to get a foot in the tablet market, this is not the way to go.
I expected the 'pro' model to be in the $1000range, surprised at the RT potentially being in the $600 range though. Microsoft has a tough line to walk though, they're trying to get OEMs on board to make Win8 tablets so they can't piss them off by selling their own first part tablet below what the OEMs will sell theirs for. They're in a tough position.
The Pro though is exactly where I figured it would be. It's basically a laptop in a tablet form, it's not a toy, it's a real quad core i5 Windows8 computer.
Tagging on to Tank's post and MrPete's critique - $600 for the Surface RT is in line with the IPad 3 in price. The base Surface RT has 32GB storage space AND a Micro SD slot. CNET also claims that it will ship with a version of MS Office.
Ya know, if there were more textbooks available electronically that weren't just rentals, I'd get one of those pro versions at launch. Seriously, from a studying point of view and taking notes, that thing would reduce my textbooka nd writing material load down to nil. Add to that how dependant I am on MS Office (especially Excel) and that thing is perfect.
If it can run Autodesk and Solid Works, I'd be pretty confident in its ability to run various accounting software packages and Careware. If it can support extra monitors / displays, I'm sold.
I imagine it'll be able to at least dual screen. It has an external video port on it so i imagine you can dual screen with the surface as screen one and an external as screen 2. There's also lots of USB based monitors out there now that do video over usb. I'm triple screening on my laptop now with a regular VGA monitor, laptop screen and an AOC e2251FWU which gets power and video off the USB port. NO reason I can think of that the Pro tablet wouldn't be able to do somethign similar since this is built into Windows7.
Uh, so, did we all just forget?
I was promised a big ass table.

You're thinking of the Microsoft Surface. This is the Microsoft Surface.
I can see the Table Surface continuing on, they look cool on CSI and Hawaii 50 :)
I don't think the surface tablet does anything if you put a phone or cup of coffee on it.
But now with the Nexus setting a price point.. if the surface remains at the suspected pricing.. it will fail.

The 7" tablet market is a bit different I think, those consumers are budget minded for the most part. That said, the Nexus 7 does look like a bad ass budget tablet, it'll probalby kill Fire sales.
I am thinking about the Surface RT. Currently waiting for final specs like for 3G etc. iPad 3 has some 3G and cellular in the $650 range.
Whenever I talk about the Surface my wife is nodding and not shaking her head. Soon we'll be getting new phones too so I hope Windows Phone 8 will be a good option. I like that Lumia 900 (rated best phone by CNet I think).
I have the Lumia 900, it's a pretty nice phone. The 900 though can't go to WinMo8, they'll do a v7.8 release to give us the software features that don't rely on new hardware to work. But the hardware spec is being raided up a bar so I imagine the WinMo8 Lumia will have a different number like Lumia 980 or something.
SURFACE will probably go on sale today for pre-orders.
I am a bit dissappointed in the $499 without any keyboard cover and $599 with. I was quite ready to make the jump at $499 with the keyboard cover. I was planning on this being a personal toy that might flop. Not so sure about that now.

With the kbd it's on par with the same memory capacity ipad but has a slightly larger screen and some other bells and whistles (alsothe keyboard). But i'm not interested in the RT, i'm waiting on the Pro. I"m not looking for a mobile toy, i'm looking for the next evolution in computing which the Pro looks like it'll be bringing in with it, i've also seen a nice Sony made hybrid win8 pc as well.
Damn thing is $519/$619/$719 CDN. Dollar is on par, this price pisses me off.
I guess I'll just wait for the price to come down enough that the 32GB+keyboard is $499. It was just supposed to be a toy for Christmas anyway.
I also like the fact it comes with Office 2010 (suck it, iPad) and has expandable memory (suck it again, iPad)
I ordered the 32GB tablet only model.
My wife said I could try it out and make sure it works , before it gets packed away for Christmas.
If I could use a wireless 360 controller to play games on it, I might want one.
That would be acceptable I suppose.
A trying out my new surface. No instruction book. I am actually using the cursive input right now. Using my finger. l can really give people the finger now. Cool. l Think of it as more of a toy. I can do most normal web stuff but getting at the operating system is bitch.
