When running Rfactor or iRacing do you need to have access to your computer/keyboard AFTER you initially set everything up? Asked slightly differently, once you start racing can you control everything from your wheel and not have to access your keyboard?
Asking because Parcells could purchase meself a tower and keyboard, pipe it into my TV but my set-up isn’t conducive to having my computer near my portable racing setup. But if I can set the game up and then sit in my chair to run everything via the wheel Parcells will consider this PC racing thingy you guys are into.

I don't think you 'need' a keyboard 'during' a race.
But this likely depends on the race series and the user.
For instance the V8Supercar series I have everything I need mapped onto my wheel, but that is me. Others may want more options/control and need more input than the wheel gives.
In some series I have wanted to adjust my pit strategy during the race and I use the keyboard cursor keys for this.
Also if not everyone is on TeamSpeak (ie efnet) it is useful to have some chat keys (ie Sorry, Thank you) mapped and again I just use the keyboard for this.
You will 'need' a mouse handy and if you get a wireless mouse may as well get a wireless keyboard.
Also, your wheel and pedals need to connect to your computer :) so you will need at least one (or two if you do separate connections) long USB cable...
And the headset/microphone can be a wireless, but if it is not then you will also need to run this to the computer.
So I don't think it should be an issue to put a computer in one corner of a room and have the race setup in another.
But I think you will have at least one cable going between the two...
My TB X11 headset works great for skype or teamspeak, but I have one issue. I cant separate the game volume from the chat volume! Not unless I want to use two sound cards which I would rather not. For now, I use my laptop for Teamspeak while I play on the desktop.
Yes and no...All the basic controls can be mapped to the wheel, but you will find you will run out of buttons quite quickly. A solution would be either a wireless keyboard or a button box. http://www.derekspearedesigns.com/Button-Boxes.html I'm kinda hoping Bash has one of these lurcking in his "to do" pile :-)
Church TS ? may be being dumb...usually am But not sure what TS may stand for, sure I have what you need, and will give it to you as soon as I know what it might be LOL
There are some members of GBR who use xbox controllers to race on rFactor. I don't know who they are, but if you start a thread over there in the General Discussion area asking for help using a controller I'm sure all of your questions will be answered.
If you like, you can set up TeamSpeak so that the game volume will turn down while folks are talking. This is somewhat annoying, but I know a couple guys use it.
What I found works best is to turn the game volume down slightly and adjust the volume in TS to your liking ahead of time. Rules at GBR during races is to keep the chatter and use it mainly for race specific discusion (ie. Exiting Pits, on your left, etc).
I turned my game volume down to 30%
I dont mind as I can still hear the car loud enough an people over TS
I even have it squacking in and out when some one talks like a team radio lol
He he, Yes I am on the pace for the low to mids, and this one is about consistancy not hot lapping...I just wish I knew where the Aliens find that time...I suspect some of it is under braking, I tend to play it safe. But it may be I take the wrong line here and there...Ah well never expected to get near them but... FOUR SECONDS! dammit
Okay tomorrow I set out in my first GBR Series race...I can stop trying to push to see how fast I can get round and settle into a racing groove, pit strategy? no idea. When I am short on gas, I'll pit...that's about it. I seem to be easy on tires so as long as I can keep it on the black stuff, find a nice gap and stay out of trouble, I think I have done all I can to survive. I'm driving for a finish, and get some points on the board.
Had a bit of fun with F1 earlier. Found where I am loosing some time as he shot up beside me on the long uphill, side by side I managed to stay ahead with the wildest cornering maneuver that should have ended in disaster but somehow I found myself still on track and ahead. My reward? He knocks me off at the next corner LOL
Don't worry about it. You'll be fine. It's an endurance race...and attrition WILL be a factor. Run your own race, keep your nose clean and you'll be surprised where you may finish. I netted a podium at Bathurst when 2 or 3 cars in front of me encountered troubles.
I qualified in sixth, up with the mid runners and if I get a decent start a good chance to sit in the hole between the Aliens and the rest. Found that when the tires drop off it really make a difference so must keep it smooth and take care of them. My pit strategy is a bit of a mystery, mostly to me. I'm going with...when I need fuel, pit. Night to day...Had to tinker with the Pc to get the fps for the start. Need new graphics card!
So my Sunday curse struck again and I was dumped off the server after only a few laps...trying to be zen about it, after all I only did 200 laps practice, so much time so little reward.
Ouch! I feel for you Knight. That happened to me with the efnet endurance race at the ring. Practiced for WEEKS for the event and got dropped from the server at the end of the first lap of a 2 hour endurance race.
I was NOT zen about it. I am pretty sure I made sailors blush with the language I used.
Yeah I have been having a lot of this and it is doing my blood pressure no favors, just checked my connection speeds and though they are not great (3meg up and down) it is fast enough. Oh well like I say I am being Zen about it, maybe I'll have better luck next time Lets see if I am still Zen if I cannot get in to the EUSL LOL
Today I actually finished my first race over at GBR...Not only finished but WON! Okay the last two positions werer a gift due to a crash two laps before the end but hey I fought the entire race to be in the position to recieve that gift and I am as pleased as punch.
Cheers guys, I see my team mate went shopping LOL First race with the new PC as well, it is working like a dream. Next week the enduro series and iRacing...starting to get the hang of iRacing now I have discovered setting the wheel to 900 degs makes a hell of a difference.
Wondered more specifically if any of the lads (and lasses if we have any?) in here play :)
GBR was actually formed by 2O4F members looking to dabble in PC sim racing. 95% of our members are 2O4F members. Currently there isn't a lot of Euro members (I think Knight & Church may be the only ones to date so far, and we also have our "Token Aussie"), so depending on your time zone, races may be fairly limited (we do try to run Sunday mornings (PDT) to allow for Euro time zone opportunities. Races are early enough that they are completed in plenty of time to attend EUSL on FM4. The core series of our group is the Wednesday night (PDT) V8 Supercar series (run by Seahawks) that runs every other week. We frequently have 15+ cars show up. There are several other mods that are being run by other members, including Group A Touring Cars (F1Fan07), LMS/ALMS Mutliclass (KRGDark), Mustang Challenge (Whitewolf), Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup (myself) and others. Spazcar had also made the shift to the rFactor platform, and runs on Tuesday nights. Spaz has also been running a Street Stock series as well for the oval crowd.
Check out our forums, if it's something you think you'd be interested in, fill out an app (in the threads), and we can get you scheduled for a practice session or two. One thing to keep in mind, we are definitely more of a "social" group, much like the gang here at 2O4F, so while we do get competitive, clean, fair, fun racing holds paramount. "Win at all costs" mentality is not present, nor tolerated. Since you're here hanging w/ this crowd...that's likely not an issue.
Sounds real nice Sherb, will definitely look into this in the upcoming future. As for now I think I need to practice more with my wheel in Forza but this coming fall I'm going back to uni and should have plenty of spare time.
Yeah I can get some time in, when are you planning to be on?
around 9.00gmt+
I will post on here when i am on.
I need to find the TS details for GBR if you can PM me them?

Just found I am 4 secs off the leader board for the next race....Mutter mumble discontent. Nearly a hundred laps and stull that far off LOL
Don't worry Knight, I was just spying on you on Liveracers and noticed you beat my time, so I will be right with you tomorrow in the race.

Might try this game out when I've grown somewhat tired of Forza ;P
Still many of you playing it?
Thousands, though I just run with GBR, there are loads of series run over at http://Race2Play.com I am a member but yet to enter a race there.
Wondered more specifically if any of the lads (and lasses if we have any?) in here play :)
