Many of you have seen that I am not a MLG fan. In spite of that, I think MLG can be good for HALO's future.
I just wish MLG used mostly default HALO settings. Conversely, I suppose HALO could also be a little (very little) more like default MLG.
Compare the folks that are here that aren't anymore because people aren't playing Halo to how many people and teams and how much interest was here on this website for Halo 2 and Halo 3. I mean, seriously, look at how much Halo I've played over the years. Compare that to the amount of Reach I've played. There are a lot of Halo fans right there with me, too.
MLG variants are a superior game from the vanilla ones. You've got to fight over most of the map for the power weapons that spawn at fixed times. The spawns themselves make more sense.
Of course we cannot forget Bungie's next game. If it's an FPS then all bets are off until we see what it is all about.
You're also ignoring the fact that Halo 3 was the king of the heap for a stupid long time. There wasn't noticable burnout from Halo 2,although I'm sure there were isolated incidents. There was no drop in people from Halo 2 to 3. There was an increase. Reach fucked it all up, dude.
Halo 3 enjoyed near double the population of REACH, no question about it. That painful truth is exacerbated by the fact 360 install base is something like 3X more now than during the Halo 3 hay days. I accept that REACH's population performance is abysmal. I find it hard to believe it actually cut it's own throat. Before REACH's Beta, there were no reasons to think REACH would not be a natural game to migrate to. Even after the Beta, people were singing praises for features they eventually came to dislike. So REACH's features likely did not cut it's own throat for initial sales. We have heard (I have no facts in hand) that REACH's initial sales were similar to Halo 3. Populations in similar time periods were on par. It's what came after that's disappointing. Halo 3 out performed REACH on all but a few minor moments in time. I believe it was simply a Halo burnout out across the fan base.
Some suggested the title Update (TU) would bring back players to REACH. Others said removing bleed-through and back pedalling on the TU to Vanilla gametypes would chase everybody away. There wasn't one thing in the population data that indicated the TU had a positive effect or that any back pedalling had any negative effect. The population remained very steady throughout the whole calamity (though it is dropping some now).
Alright, I'll concede REACH could have had better long term performance if not for:
Battleship grey forged maps.
Frame-rate issues that plagued many maps and ruined many exciting looking Forged maps.
Invasion gametype. It could be so much better, somehow.
BTB maps made for invasion were too big and Forging in them was a problem.
DMR pacing created a time between shots that allowed even me to think about my grocery list.
Some AA that created exploits and/or were stupid/worthless.
Some other stuff.
i wish regular MM was closer to MLG setting. i like it, but switching back and forth is just out of the question. that's even worse than standard v TU. pick something and stick with it.
in H3, our clan had "MLG Monday" customs. it was awesome. i would rather play those setting than regular MM.
i miss MLG Monday.
Most of my friends stopped playing Reach not because of burnout, but just because they found the game boring with no incentive to play. I still love Halo, but I find myself almost being forced into the idea of continuing to play Reach. I find myself in a very much "love/hate" relationship with the game.
There is still fun to be had in the game, but mostly from playing with friends and not really with the game itself. I mean, the pure joy of playing the game is not there for me in Reach.
I enjoyed H3 right up until Reach. Right now I feel like I'm just treading water waiting for H4 and what I hope will be a revitalization of the Halo community.
A lot of people who play REACH are or were frequently playing other games. Maybe they are less likely to burnout in REACH's last year.
I'm certainly in a grin and bear mode it with REACH. My friends are all still turning out and the game does have variety. Should be easy to last another seven months.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the population at the end of Halo 3 very similar to the current population of Reach?
You have to remember that Halo 2 had literally zero competition for online play from other games. Halo 3 was the same way until halfway through its life cycle. I had many friends migrate to COD or the BF series at the end of Halo 3 without even giving Reach a chance. There was a lot of burnout. Hell, I was burned out by the end of Halo 3 and played very few MM games over the last year prior to Reach's release. I played clan nights with 2o2phalo, but that's almost it. I don't think you can pinpoint blame on either burnout or gameplay, rather, it's a combination of the two plus some other factors (economy, maturation, life, etc).
Your point is well taken and perhaps I am suffering from some sort of burnout. Let me also state though that I do still play the game on a fairly regular basis and I've taken up to searching out more friends to play since so many on my friends list have moved away from Reach.
The desire is still there to play, but it's just a kind of lukewarm feeling instead of being fired up and excited.
