Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition - (Update)

My guess is as good as anyone's as to what is going to be released.  But at least we have a countdown timer now on http://baldursgate.com/ and it's only 10 hours as of this post.  Personally I'd like to see some well-done remakes and sequels, but I'd take either really.  As long as obsidian isn't allowed to touch the franchise I'll be a happy camper.

Edit:  Looks like we're getting a remake after all.  Details can be found here - http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=3b6c0e6ef0c1deb880f420476&id=6ae2f577cd

Update: Beamdog reps tell us that the team at Overhaul is adding "new, original content" to the original game to make up the Enhanced Edition. "This is the Enhanced Edition, it's not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update." He also confirms that no platforms have been announced just yet.

Update 2: A Beamdog rep also confirms that the company is self-publishing. Though he wouldn't go into detail regarding the new content, he says that "it's being loving crafted in the spirit of the original with the help of some of the original developers." Additionally, Cameron Tofer and Trent Oster have been working on the project ("planning and organizing") for "over a year now." We'll also hear more soon, as the team is planning "regular announcements every week with more details."

I loved the last one.  I agree, no Obsidian please.

I actually liked the Icewind Dale series Obsidian did, but everything else they have worked on since has been buggy and/or shitty.

Odd how they slap a new name on the company and suddenly they forget how to develope games eh? haha  I guess they should have stuck with Black Isle studios.

For those of you that might be interested in playing those classics on a newer OS and don't have the original copies -

GamersGate has the D&D anthology series really cheap at the moment.  The bonus is, you can install the old games on something like Win 7 hassle free, the downside though is that some of the mods won't work because as I understand it there are some needed files missing from anthology for the mods to work properly.  I've never bought anything from GamersGate though, so maybe someone else can shed some light as to whether they are a reputable company.

I looked into buying these to play on my laptop when I didn't have access to my console or gaming PC.  I did some research before buying because I am always scared that these games won't run well on new machines.  I probably read 100 different reviews and they were split right down the middle.  On some systems, the games wont run and crash.  On others, it seems to run fine.  The people having the most success were running XP.  The one running W7 often had to run in compatibility mode, and often still couldn't get them to run.  It's a cheap investment for the chance that it might work, but just thought I would throw it out there.  Do your own research before you buy.

Probably some darn good advice there.  Pretty sad because the reason for the re-release was so they *would in fact play on Win7.

On a side note as it turns out BG2 is also going to remade.  From the sounds of things they are revamping the original engine.  I kind of have mixed feelings about this.  On one hand, I can appreciate them keeping some of the original spirit of the game.  But at the same time, I think I was partially hoping for a completely new engine for modern PC's.

So far the ETA on release is May-ish, and we're suppose to get weekly updates until then.  Hopefully by the end of March we'll start seeing some gameplay footage that will either fuel the trolls or let us all rest at ease.

I'd love to have these games updated to DnD4.0.  I'm jonesin' for some DnD-based rpgs, preferably with updated rulesets.  Why are there no 4.0-based games?

I know it was a shitty game but I thought Daggerdale was based on 4.0? I played the demo and it was so bad I never purchased the full game.

The remake of Baldur's Gate will be released on the iPad and the PC.  No details yet as to whether they will be working with Steam or not on the PC version.  But they have said it will cost no more than $10.

Wow nice!  iPad would be a no brainer for me. They mention a date?

The closest thing to a release date at this point has been "Summer 2012".
